Tokico HP Series Rear Shock (94-04 excl. IRS Cobra) - Installation Instructions

AmericanMuscle Installation Garage

The below installation instructions work for the following products:
Tokico Struts 9904 Small
Here at American Muscle, we're all about DIY (do it yourself). Of course, there's nothing wrong with seeking out a little bit of tech help prior to taking on an installation on your own. Our Mustang installation guides will provide valuable instructions and hopefully answer any how-to questions that you may have along the way.

Please read through the instructions carefully before starting this project.  Take the time to get all the materials together as well as all the safety equipment.

WARNING

Do not use any tools on the chrome piston rod on your shocks or struts. Doing so will damage them and result in failure and will void your warranty. Also, failure to use dust shields will void your warranty as well

Tools needed:
  • 15mm deep socket
  • 18mm wrench
  • 19mm socket
  • Floor Jack
  • ½” Drive ratchet
  • Impact gun is recommended if available

Front Struts Installation:

  1. Jack the car up and place securely on jack stands.

  2. Put the floor jack under the center of the rear end and put a slight load on it.

  3. Remove the trunk liners to get access to the two upper shock bolts. (several plastic push on fasteners)

  4. Once the trunk liners are out, remove the two top nuts to the rear shocks with the 15mm deep socket. You do not need to keep any of the bushings or hardware. You should receive all new hardware and bushings with your new shocks.

  5. Tokico Shock 9404 1

  6. Once you have the top nuts removed, lower the floor jack down and the factory shocks should lower out of the hole.

  7. Now you can remove the bottom shock bolt. Use a 15mm socket on the nut and an 18mm wrench on the bolt head to remove it.

  8. Now pull the factory shock out of the car. You may need to compress the factory shock to get it out.

  9. Check the underside of the upper hole for the old bushings, as they tend to stick in the holes.

  10. Tokico Shock 9404 2

  11. Now take your new shock and put it back in the bottom bracket. Put the bolt through from the inside towards the outside. Use your 18mm wrench on the nut and your 19mm socket on the bolt. Tighten firmly!

  12. Tokico Shock 9404 3

  13. Before you put the top end of the shock through the hole, make sure that you have the lower washer and lower rubber pieces on the bolt.

  14. Tokico Shock 9404 4

  15. Now you can put the top of the shock through the hole to the trunk.

  16. Now put the upper rubber piece on, followed by the upper tin piece, and then by the nut.

  17. Tighten up the upper shock nut (supplied) with the 15mm deep socket.

  18. Repeat the process for the other shock.

  19. Now you should test drive your car and listen for any abnormal or new noises.

  20. Also make sure that the car drives as it did before the installation.

  21. Enjoy your new Tokico HP Shocks!
