Andrew Cilio: In 1983 Ford brought a new look and feel to the Mustang line-up. The Foxbody Mustang sported a new headlight design giving the front end a more pointed, aero dynamic look compared to previous years. Taillights were redesigned and infused with their own amber turn signals. Also included was a reversed hood scoop, and Fords blue oval logo appeared for the first time on the front end. The GTs also had a matte-black stripe placed on the hood, harkening back
to the Bosses and Mach 1s of the early 70s.
1983 brought a return of the rag top, which had not been seen on a Mustang since 1973. The Stang powerplant offered a 2.3L 4 cylinder (88HP) and 3.8L V6 (112HP). The 5.0L H.O. (high output) V8 produced 175 HP - the most in over a decade. Ford tried to market a 4cyl turbo GT but sales were stale - it was slower than the V8 GT and more expensive. The 5.0L H.O. had a new 4bbl Holley for better mixture, suspension and exhaust upgrades, and the popular Borg Warner T-5 transmission which was introduced late in the year to address poor gear spacing on early 4 speed models.
