By: Andrew Cilio: The 1987 Mustang brought one of the most significant changes in body appearance and interior. Rear taillights were redesigned and the nose of the Mustang was now smooth, with flush mounted headlights and wraparound turn signals. The GT model was fitted with dummy front fender scoops and the LX model received a rear spoiler. These changes made the Mustang look a bit more contemporary and also lowered drag. Unfortunately the changes added about 100 pounds to overall weight. The dash received a whole new design with an upright instrument panel and rocker switches for lights, hazard flashers, and rear defroster. There was a cut out on the right side of the dash for a package shelf, helping make the interior look roomier. The armrests and steering wheel were also redesigned. Ford considered using front wheel drive for the ‘87 model but due to public outrage the front wheel drive platform was reserved for the Ford Probe. Ford gave the new ‘87 GT a boost in horsepower thanks to a bigger intake plenum and 580 cfm throttle bore. Ford replaced the low performing E6SE heads with E7TE heads used on their truck 302’s. The heads had better breathing valves and produced 225 HP @4,000 RPM and 300 ft/lb @ 3,000 RPM. Looking for aftermarket parts for your 87 Mustang?
