: Ford offered a hardtop, hatchback and convertible for the 1988 model year. There was not much change from previous year Mustangs, Ford found a good thing in the increased horsepower 302. Ford also hit peak production for the GT model in 1988, manufacturing 68,468 units, over a 20,900 increase from 1987. The 1988 Ford Mustang was named Car and Drivers best 10 cars of the year. The GT handling package included progressive rate springs and 1.3 inch front anti-sway bar. Suspension consisted of gas pressurized struts with rear quadra shocks and a 0.83 inch anti sway bar. The GT model offered T-top and sunroof options, although T-tops were discontinued early in the model year. The Mustang was very popular during ‘87 and ‘88, and Ford decided to continue the models production up to 1993 indefinitely, scrapping the idea of calling its Mazda based Probe the “Mustang IV” (Thanks!).
