Andrew Cilio: The 1989 Ford Mustang 4 cylinder hatchback and notchback were still available and priced under the $10,000 mark. Ford introduced a new model to the lineup, a 5.0L LX series called the LX 5.0L Sport. The model remained the same as previous LX models but was infused with Fords 5.0L 302 and the GT’s multi-adjustable sport seats. The GT model still had the sequential electronic fuel injected 5.0L, producing 225 horsepower. The only engine modification for the year was a mass airflow sensor replacing the speed density system. This modification did bring a slight horsepower drop but was welcome by anyone planning to modify their Mustang. The change allowed better drivability to modified engines since fuel/air mixture would automatically adjust appropriately. Also, there was a profile change for the camshaft to reduce valve train noise. This change brought a 2-3 horsepower drop. 1989 was Fords 25th anniversary although no special editions were produced. Ford placed a running horse emblem with “25 years” engraved on it from mid-April 1989 to mid-April 1990 for the occasion. 1989 also marked the end of the T-Tops, a hard choice for Ford, but sales were dwindling in favor of the convertible top.
