Review & Install Video

Hey I’m Justin with AmericanMuscle.com, and I’m checking out MGP’s front and rear caliper covers, fitting all 2005 and newer Mustangs. So here’s the deal, an aftermarket big brake kit is not exactly cheap, and painting your factory calipers can sometimes not give you the results you’re looking for. These covers from MGP are a great way to cover up those ugly factory calipers, while adding a little customization and helping to reduce the brake dust on your wheels. The covers are offered in a red or a black powder coat and with a number of different logo options. We have a couple here on the table including the red GT logo, the complete black Cobra setup, the red running Pony logo, and the black 5.0 logo, just to name a few. Taking a closer look at the calipers you’ll first notice a very durable T6 aluminum construction, along with that powder coated red or black finish. In addition we have the officially licensed logo right in the center, along with some simulated hardware for a more realistic look. The installation really isn’t all that bad and should take you about an hour from start to finish. Of course you will need to remove your wheels just to gain access to the calipers so make sure you have your jack handy. In addition you’re going to want to make sure 3/8” wrench just to tighten up the hardware on the covers themselves, but other than that everything is completely straightforward. So if you’re tired of looking at those rusty factory calipers and you don’t feel like forking out big dough for an aftermarket big brake kit, you’ll want to look into MGP’s caliper covers available right here at AmericanMuscle.com

Mustang Styling. This set of four Red MGP Caliper Covers are a great way to set off your new rims and they feature modern "Mustang" lettering on the front two covers and the iconic "GT" logo on the rear two. These Officially Licensed MGP Caliper Covers will give any S197 GT Mustang a big brake race ready look that will turn heads.

Reduces Brake Dust. These Caliper Covers not only look fantastic, but they also act as a protective dust shield to help keep your rims looking cleaner longer.

Quality Construction. MGP makes their Caliper covers from light weight 6061-T6 Aerospace Aluminum that is formed to the caliper for a perfect fit. The covers are then powder coated for a long lasting high gloss look. The installation brackets are TIG welded in place for extra security.

Easy No Mess Install. Painting your calipers can be messy and time consuming, but the MGP Caliper Covers simply install over your stock calipers and are held in place with the supplied clip and bolt. For a no muss, no fuss install.

Application. Designed to fit over factory brakes, this set of four MGP caliper covers include all the required hardware needed for installation on a 2005 to 2010 and newer V6 or GT Mustang.

  • GT - 05, 06, 07, 08, 09, 10

Fits GT's with factory brake calipers only, does not fit Shelby GT500.

Technical Note. A minimum of 1/8 of an inch clearance between the wheel and the brake caliper is required for proper fitment. We have found that the MGP caliper covers will require the use of a small 1/4" spacer to provide proper clearance with our aftermarket Bullitt wheels, see drop down option above

How du know if you need spacers or not? I have ordered these all ready for my 2007 mustang. I have Shelby razor wheels.. Do I need these spacers

etmarx

  • According to the mfg., you need 1/8" inch clearance between the caliper covers and the inside of the wheels and this can be measured using two quarters held together. If the clearance is insufficent, you'll likely need 5/16" spacers.

Will I need spacers for these on my 2005 GT with stock wheels? If so, front and back? What size spacer?

Henry

  • The MGP Red Caliper Covers w/ GT Logo - Front & Rear (05-10 GT, V6) will not need a wheel spacer if they are going over stock wheels. The caliper covers sit flush cover the calipers and will not cause clearance issues unless used in conjunction with Bullitt wheels which you will need to use a 25mm spacer.

Question Resolved

How much space is needed for the cover? I asked this question before but it disappeared. I have AM bullet wheels and would like to use these covers but need to know how much space they take between the caliper and the wheel when installed. Thanks

  • Since you have our Bullitt Wheels, you will want to also purchase the 1/4" spacer to provide proper clearance when using these caliper covers.

Do I need spacers? I have a 2008 GT convertible w 18 inch wheels do I need spacers and which size? Also- my husband is not mechanically inclined . Would you advise I go to the dealership to install or a tire shop or body shop?

Slymiami

  • As I just learned the hard way, it really depends on the type of wheel on your vehicle. The mfg. indicates that you need 1/8" clearance between the caliper cover and inside of your wheel. I put the covers on a short while ago and then swapped 18 inch Saleen style rims for 18 inch Bullitt style rims without checking the clearance. As soon as I hit the road, I could hear the loud scrapping sound of the wheels against the caliper covers. The fix is an easy install of 5/16" spacers that slip right over wheel studs between the axle and wheel. If H can change a tire, he can install these spacers, otherwise most any tire, repair or body shop will do the job.

    BEWARE with Fit Clearance

Even though these brake caliper covers look awesome on your Mustang.....BEWARE! If your Stang has the Bullet style wheels, you will need to install a set of at least 3/16" thick wheel spacers PRIOR to reinstalling your wheels....otherwise your wheels will rub and ruin your new caliper covers!! I installed a set of 3mm (just a hair thinner than 1/4". On another fitment note regarding rear brake caliper covers......you will have to bend the top of the new caliper covers mounting tabs, making them wider in order to straddle and fit the studs on the stainless steel caliper mounting clips!! What a disappointment having to do this.....MGP's quality and quality control should address this issue and provide customers with 100 exact fit product! Do everything I mention here and you'll save yourself a lot of time. What should have taken and hour or so to complete, involved a few hours instead due to having to go purchase spacers. American Muscle should heed these customers reviews and crackdown on their vendors and suppliers.....demanding perfect fit and top quality products.

I have a 2006 GT. I asked a professional to install these for me. He put it up on the lift and did the fronts first. No issues, extremely close to wheel, but not touching. Put back on caliper and clips do not fit properly. Had to do a little bending on the cover, which didn't cover the caliper, 1/4 inch showed on bottom. Clips we rubbing against rotor edge. Managed to quiet one, but not the other. AM is shipping me another clip. They look awesome, but have been a bit of a headache to install.

VERY EASY TO INSTALL. DIDN'T HAVE TO USE SPACERS WITH MY 20" A.R. REBEL RIMS. LOOKS GREAT AND MATCHES MY TORCH RED PAINT OF MY CAR PERFECT. HAVE NOTHING BUT GOOD COMMENTS FROM PEOPLE WHO SEE THEM ON THE CAR. IT COVERS THE CRAPPY PAINT THAT KEEPS PEELING OFF EVERY YEAR WHEN I USE TO PAIINT THEM.

Be aware if a couple things.

These caliper covers look good when installed but as others have said there are a couple issues to be aware of. First they do not cover the entire caliper and leave about ¼” to 3/8” showing on the inside edge of the caliper. I bought the caliper paint and painted the calipers before I installed the covers so whatever area showed still looked good. The clips on the front calipers had to be ground down to fit inside by the rotor which was not a big deal but you would think they would correct this issue as many people that have mentioned it. My guess is both the clips and the cover are made for several different brakes and the same size is used for all, that is why the clips need to be modified and the covers do not cover completely. The rear clips did touch the rotor on one side and make a slight noise but not anything serious. It is not possible to prevent this short of taking the caliper off and grinding a bigger gap between the rotor and caliper but it seems that not all cars have the same space between the rotor and the caliper. One other thing is they claim to do is reduce brake dust. If they do I’m not sure where unless the amount that you clean off the cover is no longer on your wheel. Having said all that, they do look good and I would use them if you want to brighten up the caliper area.

    Fits 2010 GT Nice

The online instructions call for the bending of the small wire clips that reportedly assist in keeping the front brake shoes in place. I was a little worried about this particular procedure, but after reading the online instructions and viewing the online installation video, the bending of the clips was easier than I thought and worked out very well. The rear wheel installation was a snap, and I recommend you start with the rear wheels just to get a feel of how the caliper covers fit.

    Great Look

Install was very easy, and they look great behind the 18" factory polished Bullitt style wheels However, three of the four covers did slightly scrape the wheels, so I had to purchase wheel spacers. Now there is ample clearance and the stance looks a little better with an extra half-inch of added total width on the tires. Overall, the finished product looks great, and no more than the wheel spacers cost per pair, I'd say it wouldn't be a bad idea to purchase those as well (even if only for safety's sake, in case they're needed).

    COOL LOOK

These caliper covers look sooo good. They were very easy and quick to install. What a difference in appearance. There seem to be added benefits, but I was going just for the look. American Muscle makes all the products they sell so appealing because they give how-to videos for each application and photos of the products on cars. They take away ALL the guess work. They seemed to be rather expensive, but I'm satisfied!

    Looks good, does not fit

Install should only take two hours if they were to fit correctly. Do yourself a favour and order the wheel spacers with these, because they will rub on the back wheels. I ended up having to bend mine with a pair of pliers. They do look sharp though

    2010 GT Convertible Triple Black

The fit was good, but not perfect. To optimize the fit, I had to grind/file the front clips a bit. Not too bad. The backs went on without issue. The backs make a slight rubbing sound on hard turns but barely noticible. All 150% worth it for the look. It is amazing. Really dramatizes the car. My neighbor three blocks away stopped me one day while I was passing his house on my Harley just to ask about those red brakes. Not many ways to get so much bang for under 2 Bills.

    LOOKS GREAT

I bought the caliper covers about two weeks ago aninstalled them the same day. They went on as AM said they would; easy. They look and match my GT perfectly. Some have asked me if I bought new calipers. However, the spacers were necessary to give enough clearance. Great job, AM.The chin spoiler is next.

    Be prepared

Be prepared for these to not fit. I purchased them for a 2010 GT and installed them with no issues. But the second I started driving I knew something was wrong. There was a horrible grinding noise coming from the car. After taking each wheel off and inspecting the caliper covers, I realized that one of the c-clips was grinding against the outside diameter of the rotor. There is almost nothing that I could do to stop it. I also noticed that the caliper cover was a tad smaller than the brake caliper so it left about 10% of the caliper showing, but was hard to notice unless you were up very close. On a very positive note, America Muscle customer service was very understanding and allowed me to return them. I give 5 stars to the customer service, 3 to the caliper covers. While they look fantastic, they may not work on every car.
