Great Custom Touch. Lets face it a front license plate is a big eyesore on any Mustang at a car show, but what if there was a way to hide it at a show and have it reappear when you're ready to go? Well now you can with the Flip Down License Plate Holder from AmericanMuscle.

Manually Operated. The Flip Down License Plate Holder installs under your bumper so that you can slide your license plate down under the front bumper for a clean sleek show winning appearance. And when you're ready to go back on the roads you can slide your license back out to return it to it's original upright position for everyone to see.

Application. This Manual Flip Down License Plate Holder is designed to fit on all year Ford Mustangs with it's universal mounting kit. Intended for show use only. Technical Note: This is a universal license plate holder that will require drilling into the factory bumper for installation. It is not compatible with the CS/Boss Front Fascia with Splitter, Roush Body Kit, 03-04 Cobra Chin Spoiler or Mach 1 Chin Spoilers. It may not fit with other aftermarket chin spoilers as well.

Hey I’m Justin with and I’m checking out these flip down license plate holders, available either motorized or manually operated, fitting all 79 and newer Mustangs. If you live in one of the many states that burden your ride with the unsightly front license plate, I totally feel your pain, not only is it not very attractive, but it also forces you to drill holes into your front bumper cover which is never a good thing. This flip down license plate holder is a great way to hide that front plate whenever you’re at a car show or your next spy mission, and is available in 2 different options: a motorized version that operates with the simple touch of a button, or a more budget friendly manual version. Both options mount to the underside of the front bumper but ultimately it’s up to you to decide where you’d like to place the kit. As you can see on our 2013 GT behind me we had the kit installed dead center on our front bumper. I have seen some of our customers install it on either the left or right side which does look good as well. Depending on which option you decide to go with your install time may vary slightly, for instance the manual version requires no wiring whatsoever, therefore you can expect to get that one done in about 30 minutes, on the other hand the motorized version does require a small amount of wiring in addition to the small work needing to be done underneath the car, therefore you can expect to spend about an hour on that one. Either way, if you should need any help whatsoever, you can always reference the detailed instructions on this product page. Even though Johnny Law may require a front plate in your state doesn’t mean you have to display it all the time, right? Well, if you’re looking for a cool way to hide that front plate at your next show, be sure to check out one of these flip down licence plate holders right here at

Works at track days? Hello, I was just wondering if the license plate would stay secure on this holder during a track event.

  • The license plate secures to the holder just like any other. This holder needs to be rated for highway use, so I see no reason why it wouldn't hold tight for a track event. Just stay out of the gravel pit and you'll be fine!

Will this work with a chin spoiler Wondering if it will fit good with a lower front chin spoiler on an 05 GT

  • Yeah, you just have to bolt it below the bumper where the air goes for your radiator. That's what I had to do with my 04 Cobra.

will this work on A Cervini Eleanor Body kit?? will this work on a Cervini Eleanor

  • It just needs a flat under bumper area to attach. Or you can fabricate a bracket to facilitate somewhat horizontal surface to attach it to. The plate itself is spring loaded when it becomes fully extended.

How will this work with RTR front Chin Spoiler Thinking about installing the RTR Front Chin Spoiler and was wondering how this would work with it. Also any advise on how to fix the holes left by the factory installed front license plate holder, in NY so they come with them.

  • You would have to drill at least two holes in the spoiler - if your car is lowered, you will scrape it a lot on uneven road surfaces. I have a stock front fascia on my '06 and lowered car 1.5" and I always had to check it and repair. It takes up about another 1.5" once installed - but it's a good product - just a bit delicate and takes up room. I am looking into the other type now, the type that you only attach a small flush bracket to the underneath of the car (sticks out only about .5" when installed) and the license plate attaches/detaches from car entirely when not in use or for car shows. Hope this helps!

Does it fit on a 2015 eco boost?

  • If the front end is stock, it should. The thing to keep in mind, that bumper has a more curved surface. My solution if it needs to be "kinda shimed" is to go to a hardware store. They have various rubber washers. These are black and easy to use. (I went out and bought some to have. It has saved me more than a few trips out for them.)

Will this plate bracket work on a 2015 Mustang GT with the Performance Package? I only see pictures of older body styles, and the Performance Package has a different splitter.

  • The kit works great and comes with multiple sets of fasteners to make it work pretty much anywhere with all type lower fascia. It will work on all mustang years and most other models of cars or trucks for that matter. It can be placed in very unique locations as a result, making it great for those who like to customize the look and even venture outside of traditional placement. I have a 2006 GT lowered and it looks great - it was nice to have multiple ways to attach it. Holder itself is sturdy I have scraped it up many times on parking blocks - which sucks, but is my fault - point is it has/will withstand some abuse as well.

Best idea for a fox body GT

Looks great on my fox GT. plate sits nice when displayed and folds away perfect when I don't want it displayed. Installation is a breeze and only 3 small holes need to be drilled underneath where they will never be seen. If you have a fox GT and are sick of being hassled by the local "smokeys" this product is for you. Highly recommended!!

    Flip Down License Plate

The mounting bracket does not conform to the underside of my 08 Bullitt. And the metal strap cannot be used because the area behind the bumper bottom is sealed and there is no place to mount it. I had to shim the bracket to conform it to the curve under the front bumper. I suggest that either shims be included and/or better yet, the bracket be curved to match the underside. If it is flush with the bottom of the bumper, it is more out of sight and mounts more securely.

Did you know you don't have a license plate on the front of your vehicle?

Every true mustang enthusiast knows that a front license plate ruins the steaming sexuality of our cars. How could you possibly love "8LT BFQ" standing out like a sore thumb on the front of your insanely customized beast? Some may ask why not get a personal plate? If we think about it for a minute its like having an extremely hot naked woman hold up a license plate in front of get the point. This product allows you to hide the ugly scar your car is otherwise burdened with, and still be street legal. If that doesn't convince you to buy this product, there is also the feeling like being the bad ass Jason Statham from "The transporter" with your own mechanized flip down license plate. Still not convinced? How about it only takes a few (well worth it) minutes to install? Lets do a quick recap, Hot Chick, Mustang, You're a Badass in just a few minutes.

I have a 2012 V6, Mustang Club of America package car. This holder requires either cutting the air dam or using it in the flipped up mode only. It\'s a one size fits all item that does not fit on my 2012. wasted my money on this one!

    Flip Down Holder

The Flip Down License Plate Holder is a great product because being from Maryland you are required to have a license plate on both the front and back of the vehicle. Instead of drilling holes in the front bumper of my Mustang I chose to go with the flip down holder. Its a great product thats easy to install and also doesn't hurt the body of your Mustang that can be seen. If I am driving through Maryland and need to have my license plate seen its there but if I am going to a show or driving in another state and don't want the license plate to be seen to take away from the car I just flip it down and slide it back under the bumper. This def. a great product for your Mustang if your thinking about buying one.

Great flip down plate for my 2012 Boss

Perfect fitment for 2012 Boss Mustang. Does not block cooling airflow when installed in center of facia. One problem on installation was the rubber expanding nuts; they pull out, so I had to use the washer head screws on the front attachment points as well as the rear single slot.

    Best option without drilling holes

Install was a snap with this one. The kit includes everything you'll need to complete the project. Just drill 3 holes in the bottom of the bumper and you're good to go. A small amount of the mounting bracket is visible when the plate is stowed. If you have a v-shaped front, I would recommend installing the plate holder off to the side. The plate hangs a bit low - under 8 inches.

Does not fit 2011 V6 without some cutting

On the 2011 V6, there is a plastic lip below painted bumper that impedes this license from being flush with the front bumper unless you cut into it. Thankfully, I actually had my local Ford dealership install this for me, and they did a fantastic job. But, beware if you have this body style, because you will either have it sticking out about 3"... or you'll have to cut that black plastic lip to make it flush. Still, it was better than drilling holes into the front of my bumper.

More labor than expected (2016 V6)

Allow me to preface this by saying that I am a college professor with minimal labor skills -- so my review is based on what my mechanic told me. I have a 2016 Mustang (V6) and below the car (where the bracket is supposed to attach), there is a rubber guard. In order for the bracket to attach, a piece of the guard needed to be removed -- roughly the width of the license plate so it can move seamlessly when "hidden" below the bumper. Furthermore, the body-shop specialist mentioned that since the attachment would be screwed onto a plastic plate, he questioned if the bracket would stay on for along period of time, particularly after the rigors of weather and freeway driving. His expert opinion: "I can install it, but I would not recommend it." Luckily, American Muscle has excellent customer support: They gave me a refund number and I have mailed it back (unfortunately we pay for shipping in which American Muscle offers a $10 UPS option). Great service, I just thought the extra labor defeated the purpose of the "no drill" concept. For now, I'll take my chances with just a back license plate in California.

    Fast and easy to install

This is an excellent option for those who want to keep from drilling holes in the front bumper. The install was easy and only took an hour. The plate stays in place while the car is in motion and doesn't slide around.

Does not fit 2014 Mustang V6 Standard Model

My dog ate the plate holder that came with the car so I had to buy this nicer one from American Muscle. However, there is no place to mount this unit in a secure way as shown in the instruction sheet that came with product...we (owners) have a thin piece of black plastic that serves as a mud/water guard under the front bumper, but it is too flimsy for this product. Moreover, there is no where to attach the metal arm that is supposed to stabilize the rear of this unit. American Muscle are helpful. They sent me an RMA. But, I have to pay for return shipping.
