Review & Installation Video

Hey I’m Justin with AmericanMuscle.com, and I’m taking a closer look at a retro appearance item from MMD in the form of this rear deck lid panel fitting all 05-09 Mustangs. MMD is a company that makes a number of different appearance parts ranging from retro to modern all with the one goal of setting your Mustang apart from the others. This is a part I am personally very familiar with having used it on both our 05-09 bolt on build up cars. You can see we chose this part because it adds a lot of style to an otherwise boring area, it’s no secret that this particular panel from MMD is heavily inspired by the early 70’s Mach 1’s, which did share a very similar look. As for the panel itself, it is made from a high impact ABS plastic, and then finished off in a very sleek matte black color. The panel just like those early 70’s Mach 1’s, does feature a perfect cutout in the middle, to feature that factory emblem, located on the rear deck lid. The other nice thing about this panel is that it installs easily without the use of any drilling or permanent modification, simply clean the area on your rear deck lid first using the supplied alcohol prep pads, remove the protective backing on the preinstalled 3M tape, and then adhere the panel carefully to your ride, getting everything in place should only take you about 30 minutes from start to finish. So if you’re looking to introduce a little of that retro Mach 1 styling on your S197, then be sure to check out this rear deck lid panel from MMD available right here at AmericanMuscle.com

Retro Styling. Now you can add some aggressive retro styling to your S197 Mustang with a Modern Muscle Design Rear Blackout Panel. This MMD Blackout Tail Light Panel will give your Pony's deck lid the same aggressive appearance as the classic Muscle Mustangs of yesteryear.

Quality Construction. The Modern Muscle Design rear blackout panel is molded from ultra-durable high impact black plastic for a perfect fit and features a round opening for your factory trunk emblem to show through.

Easy Installation. No drilling or messy bondo is required for installation. This MMD Rear Blackout Panel installs easily with the supplied doubled sided 3M automotive bonding tape for a quick and simple installation.

Application. The MMD Rear Blackout Panel fits perfectly on all 2005 to 2009 S197 Mustangs, including the V6, GT, Bullitt, and Shelby GT500 models.

It definitely looks nice on my car, but at $139 it seems a bit pricey for a piece of molded plastic that's held on by 3m double sided tape... especially from a mail order company!

Ask a Question

Does this fit with the MMD Trunk Cap Matte Black Cover?

bsteele13

  • Not directly unfortunately. The MMD Trunk Emblem Surround is only compatible with the Magnetic Decklid Panel as a direct fit, as all others are too thick and will not allow the emblem to sit flat unless trimmed to fit. Hope this helps!

  • I am using it with the "Black tail light trim (Item # 52001)" and it fits perfectly. Thought I would put this in case you were on the fence about buying the other style.

    Stack Racing Blackout Panel

Great product and a snap to install. Really makes a great look for the back of our mustang. Very rigid and durable panel. Highly recommend getting this if you want a black out panel and want something more permanent than the magnetic versions.

    Stack Racing Decklid Blackout Panel

my 05 V6 needed a little something on the rear end, and this was the ticket. its ribbed like the one i had on the 67 stang, and giving up the faux cap was not a option. i also added the blk tail light trim to really set it off. i`m diggin the new look as it really changed the looks of the car. the mustang forum members really liked the new look too. dislikes- its a little shinier than i had hoped for and you can see 4 dot marks between the ribs from the molding process, would really like to see this part made out of alum. back to the likes- overall i really like the part and the way it looks. it came with the 3m tape already on it, but someone had stuck 2 strips up and down on one side of the cap,( that you dont see in the pics) so i added 2 more strips of my own to the other side. its a little nervy sticking it on, trying to line it up with the cap and up into the decklid curve but not very hard to do.it fit pretty good around the cap. i thought about this part for a long time and i`m glad i got it

    Looks Great!

Very quick shipping from American Muscle, and a great product. I was surprised by how heavy and solid the plastic felt... I found that it there was plenty of 3M tape to hold it in place, and fitting was perfect. Just make sure the lines along the top are equal and it should look great.

    LOOKS GREAT

The deck lid panel looks great. I had it for a few days before i installed it, not sure if that's what i really wanted. Once I put it on, what a difference it made. I had to practice a few times before I took the tape off so I wouldn't mess it up.

MMD 05-09 Mustang Deck lid panel is absolutely awesome!

I finally bought the MMD 05-09 Deck lid panel for my 2006 Mustang GT. I really liked the styling of it with the raised horizontal lines, matte black finish and it having the hole in the center for the GT gas cap emblem to fit through. I waited until it went on sale for the $89.99 price, which I honestly believe is a great price for this item. I have the blacked out tail light lenses, sequential light system and the MMD matte Black tail light trim. When I installed the deck lid panel, it just set the whole thing off immediately! Being that my Mustang is Tungsten Gray, I'm going with the whole Gray and Black theme with small hints of chrome here and there. If you're looking for a great add on that will definitely change the look of the back end of your Mustang for the better, then I highly recommend getting one of these. It's extremely well made and didn't take longer than 20 minutes to install. Just make sure not to take all the red covering off the double sided tape. Take small sections and fold them over so they stick out the outer edge of the panel so you can pull them out from behind it once you have it centered where you want it. Trust me, this stuff sticks like cement and if you have it misaligned and all the red covering off, you'll never be able to pull the panel back off to re-position it without either ruining the tape or God forbid, the panel. Take your time and once it's in the right position, slowly pull the red tape out from behind it and press on the panel firmly to get a solid secure install. I absolutely love it and I guarantee you will too!

Very nice item for your pony.....

Very thick piece of plastic that finishes off the back end of the mustang. Plus it's $20.00 cheaper than the honeycomb version. Very happy with the look.

nice retro look without overdoing it

Nice fit, simple install. Just be patient and get it aligned right. Get the black trim for your tail lights while you're at it,they go well together. I have the California Special with a stock lower air-diffuser in black and this add-on really compliments it and makes it stand out from the crowd.

This MMD rear decklid blackout panel really does look good, and ads a look and depth that I have been looking for. Installation was easy with the included instructions and two sided adhesive. My '07 Roush 427R will set itself apart from others at upcoming car shows!

    Great product, looks awesome

Install was easy. I also added some extra 2 sided tape after reading previous reviews. Not real sure I needed it though, THAT STFF REALLY STICKS! Be darn sure you have it set properly when you lay it on. I beleive you will acually remove paint or break the panel trying to remove to re-position if not set the first time. Looks fantastic, especially along with the black tail light trim also in place. I.M.H.O.
