Hey, guys. Stephanie with AmericanMuscle.com here with my review of the ST Suspension Coil Over Kit available for all 1979 to 2014 GT and V6 Mustangs. The ST Suspension Coil Overs are going to be for the Mustang owners out there that are looking to get away from the fixed drop of a lowering spring, and for someone that's looking for height adjustability benefits instead. Typically, a lowering spring is going to be best for someone that's looking to simply lower their car and doesn't really mind a stiffer ride. The spring rate in the lowering spring is not going to be as aggressive as in a coil over because they're mostly designed to be used with stock shocks. Coil overs like these, on the other hand, come with shocks that are set to take the abuse of a lowered car, and these are going to be designed to work with a coil over spring rates. So the first thing is, ST makes kits for a large range of Mustangs. We're talking from '79 all the way to 2014 and we're going to be discussing all of these kits today. If we wanna talk about the height adjustability that the kit offers, which I think is one of the biggest pluses when choosing a coil over setup as opposed to the traditional aftermarket spring setup, we're going to see that the ST kit offers anywhere from 1.2 inches to 2.5 inches for the front depending on which generation Mustang you're shopping for.We all know that the gens are obviously set up differently and on different chassis, so the kits are going to change slightly depending on the car, but the rear-drops range from just less than an inch all the way to two-and-a-half inches. To be more exact, usually for any particular gen, the kit is going to offer about an inch range of both the front and rear view to play around with. This means that you can go anywhere from just below stock height, to tuck and wheel height, and anywhere in between, depending on what you're looking for here.So the kit is going to include two front coil overs, two rear shocks, two rear springs, bump stops and your spanner wrenches. The spanner wrenches are going to be your way to adjust your coil over height. Now this is superior to your other type of coil over where you will literally need to turn spring first. You can press the spring again the top pad in order to change ride height. The problem with this is it puts preload on the springs, and you're already setting yourself up to lose some handling performance. Getting into some of the specifics about the construction here. The front coil overs have heavily galvanized steel with zinc plated front housings. Then these also have self-centering dust boots and those bump stops that I mentioned earlier. This kit having bump stops is nice because the bump stop is going to give another level of protection from bottoming control when you're playing around with the max level of suspension travel that's available. Now these coil overs don't have dampening adjustments like some other options do out there, but that would be the next step up on the coil over scale. This kit here is more of a high-end level one kit on the coil over scale. There are some options out there that allow you to adjust dampening, which is the compression and rebound of the shock, or basically to kind of oversimplify this, adjusting the dampening will allow you to soften or stiffen the ride depending on what you want out of your setup. And full disclosure here guys, ST is actually working with KW on these coil overs, which means that these are engineered by KW, and they're really going to be what I consider top quality. KW has a lot of proven testing and manufacturing behind their products, and a lot of big names support and run KW products so you know this is a high-quality kit. So with that said, when we start to look at price, you're going to notice that as far as kits that are on the same level as this kit right here, meaning they do not offer dampening adjustability or external reservoirs, this kit's actually a little bit more expensive. For the Fox-bodied '04 guys, you're looking at right about $1700, while the S197 guys are looking at just under $1200. At the end of the day, it's pretty typical to pay for quality and coil overs can be an investment depending on what you want out of your setup. If you're looking for top quality and performance or just looking to get your car lower than some springs will allow. This is a bolt-on kit, guys, and will work for both coupe and convertible models. There's no permanent modification necessary, but there is a fair amount of work involved with the install, a few hours or so.So I'll call this a two out of three wrenches on our scale when we look at overall difficulty. The work is straightforward and ultimately you're going to need a decent socket set, a jack and jack stands, or a lift to get the job done. And again, it's nothing too hard but just a little time consuming. You have to break down everything like your calipers and rotors and get your old shock and strut and spring setup out, then you've got to get your new setup in. And don't forget, you might need a little extra time to get the right height dialed into your liking. You may end up having to do a few adjustments to get your car to be where you want it to be, and then you also have to make sure that it's even on each side. You're going to wanna make sure that you're setting it up for whatever you plan on doing with your car and for the performance that you want out of it, whether it be the drag strip, a cornering beast, or just a low rider in general. And keep in mind that after tweaking this much of your cars suspension and ride height, you're probably gonna need a good alignment to make sure everything looks good and is still in spec.Okay, so overall the ST Suspension Coil Over kit is a high-quality kit that's going to offer a lot of room to adjust ride height. And even though you aren't looking at dampening adjustability here, this kit is still going to be top quality for its grouping. It's engineered by KW and has been extensible tested. But as always, don't just take my word for it, especially when it comes to something of this nature. I'll always encourage you to check out more online for yourself and look at your other options that are out there.I'm Stephanie, and for all things Mustang, keep it right here at AmericanMuscle.com.
