PA Performance Wire Upgrade Required? I recently purchased the 130 amp PA Performance alternator for my 06 gt. I was just curious as to the amp output for the stock alternator, and if the PA Performance power wire upgrade is required for the PA 130 amp replacement.

How is the strength of this alternator compared to stock? As asked before, what's the stock alternators output? How much of a difference is it from stock settings? More importantly, will this clear out the dreaded p0340 code asking for a cam sensor when its really a bad alternator on the 05-06 models?

  • I don't know from personal experience about the p0340 code, but everyone on the forum swears that it's an alternator issue. I personally had 3 motocraft batteries eaten by the stock alternator that was replaced 3 times in 2 years. Finally got sick of the hassle and got one of these. I don't even miss the money.

This alternator may be great, but I will never know...

PA Performance packages their alternators so poorly that it was bent in shipping and I didn't catch it until it was installed, seized up and burnt the S belt off my car (costing me another $45 to replace). Called PA Performance and was immediately given the run around by customer service (his name was Kevin) stating that they would have to get the alternator back and determine whether or not it was their fault before issuing a credit or replacement (so I would just have a wait a week or so). They also went to great length to say what a small company they were and this could not be their fault and that if they had to take back the alternator it would hurt them worse than me (seriously?). However, after much negotiating Kevin agreed to work with American Muscle (who was great by the way) and have them ship me another alternator overnight (which I had to pay for 1/2 the shipping on) and then I could send back the original one for them to evaluate later. Got the second alternator the next day via UPS and it was also damaged in shipping due to poor packing by PA Performance. I actually videoed the opening of this box because I had a feeling it would be damaged too as it came the same way as the first (put the video on YouTube at the request of American Muscle and AM refunded all my money and shipping costs and sent me return forms for both alternators). To be clear, AM was great the whole time and without them I would not have gotten this resolved with PA Performance. PA Performance may make a fine product (I really don't know) but due to their extremely poor customer service I will never find out. BTW, ended up buying a refurb and all is well.

    Poor packaging

I ordered this product a while back when my alternator was failing on my 06 GT. the arrival was timely as always with American muscle but upon receiving the package I noticed the box was damaged. Upon further inspection I notice part of the alternator's pulley sticking through the box and quickly asked the UPS man if he had dropped it. He stated no but it may have happened at one of the UPS facilities and that if there's a problem to contact the sender (American Muscle). I opened the package an the shaft the pulley sits on was bent. I called American muscle and was quickly helped, the person I talked to had asked me to take. Picture of te alternator and the box it came in and email it to him. Not 5 minutes later he called me back and told me to expect a new one in 2 days. 2 days later received a new one with minor damage to the box it came in, luckily the alternator was unharmed and after about 30 minutes it was installed. Later on u received a packing slip in the mail to return the damaged alternator free of charge. The alternator has been performing as it should and I do recommend it just beware of the poor packaging by PA Perfomance and to fully inspect for damage before installing it. And as always, thanks American Muscle for the awesome customer support I haven't used another parts store since and will continue using American muscle.

This worked perfect on my 06 GT with Saleen Supercharger. Stock alternator died at 50K miles. Its also nice that the pulley is not a clutched style like OEM, so there is no need to change it out (need special tool) if you have a Saleen SC on your car. Shipping was fast - no complaints so far, and for the price compared to Ford or rebuilt you can't go wrong with this.

    Great Replacement Option

Was getting the P0340 code on my 2006 Mustang GT and it was caused by a failing alternator. Purchased this one from American Muscle and it installed perfectly. No more check engine light. For the money I'll take the PA Performance alternator over an off brand or rebuilt unit. Thanks American Muscle!

Great Alternator! Great Price! Great Service!

I recently had the infamous P0340 code pop up like the majority of 05-08 owners. Instantly my car was having power delivery issues. Especially when above 50MPH. I replaced the 2 camshaft position sensors and 5 miles later my problem returned. Read the forums and found out that it was probably due to a failing alternator. I wanted an upgrade from the rebuilt and factory options so I went with this bad boy. This is a HUGE upgrade to the OEM alternator. Install was easy and only takes about an hour with standard tools. There is no need to take off the throttle body to install the alternator as long as you are careful with the bracket. But if you did the install time would be much less. This alternator quickly fixed all my problems and then some. If you are still using the factory alternator, buy this now. Especially if you have a Shaker system or an aftermarket stereo. You can tell the difference with this PA Performance Alternator. As always, Two thumbs up to A.M..

    Best Replacement Option

I picked this alt after my original blew. I did the install with a friend in about 30 min. Definitely get the upgraded wiring kit with the inline fuse as well. It was also price much better than a factory replacement unit even including the wiring kit upgrade.

    awesome power addition

My GT Mustang is 8 years old with nearly 100K miles. The stock alternator was doing fine, but I decided that it was time to replace it so that I wouldn't be stuck on the road. The PA Performance Alternator took a good mechanic 15 minutes to install and the result was AWESOME! Even thought the stock alternator was not broken, I could see the power boost in the car almost immediately. All accessories worked better and the car seemed more responsive, just from alternator replacement! I am very happy with this purchase, and think it is a far better investment than buying a higher power alternator from Ebay or another stock alternator (and it is less expensive!)

    BETTER THAN FACTORY ALTERNATOR

Have a 2007 mustang gt with 25k miles. Battery would not stay charged. Installed new battery. Battery would still drain inside a month. Decided to go with this one because of price and better overall performance. Item shipped and received within a week. Opened box and noticed the pulley was bent. I guess it happened during shipping. That's what the guy I talked to from PA Performance told me. They set me up with another pulley and received it within another week. No hassle from PA, just out the inconvenience of the time it took to receive the other pulley. Impressed with quality of unit. Works great.

    Problem Solved.

My 2008 Mustang GT ate 2 Motorcraft batteries in 3 yrs. / 40K miles. While no fault was found with the factory alternator after the first battery lost a cell, both the battery and factory alternator failed. No OBD II codes, System self test reported "Charging System OK" even though the system was not charging at all. Research on various forums claimed the PA Performance alternator solved THEIR problems, and so far it has solved MINE. Packaging from PA was minimal but product arrived unharmed (in excellent time). The install is easy. On the factory tune, my unit charges at 14.3V at ALL RPMs (including idle, voltage taken at +/- posts). I have not tested amperage, although with all (stock) accessories on, the unit keeps charging from idle RPM. Instructions are included to calculate alternate pulley sizes for non-stock applications. Of note, on power up-shifts the serpintine belt has a minor slip and chirp, likely due to the use of a non clutched pulley on the PA unit, but this is speculation on my part. The price is slightly above the rebuilt units I considered, but nearly half the price of other "New" stock replacements offered by other manufacturers. I feel this was an excellent value for what appears to be a quality replacement. additional info: New battery is is an Optima Yellow Top.

    Great Buy

Recently started getting the "Check charging system" sporadically while driving and figured that the stock alternator was on its way out. I picked this up and had it and a new belt installed in under an hour. Car feels smoother and runs quieter. Definitely an easy do it yourself job, just make sure you have a 1/2" drive breaker for the tensioner and its smooth sailing. The lifetime warranty has a ton of stipulations so we'll see if thats actually worth anything, but so far... a great buy, easy install and no regrets.
