Review & Install Video

Hi I’m Justin with AmericanMuscle.com, and I’m taking a closer look at the Magnaflow Magnapack catback exhaust fitting the 99-04 Mustang GT and Mach 1. The Magnapack gets its name from these two Bullitt style mufflers, which are a throwback to the classic 60’s and 70’s fastback mufflers, and the sound you get from using this exhaust reflects that. The entire system features full stainless steel construction throughout including these straight through design Magnapack mufflers, the 2.5” mandrel bent tubing, all exiting out these 3.5” brightly polished tips. Because Ford chose to weld the factory exhaust on these cars, you will need to cut it off before getting started with the install. Once you have it out of the way, getting the new Magnaflow system installed should only take you about 2 hours from start to finish. Now let’s hear how Magnaflow’s Magnapack sounds compared to our factory exhaust.

Free Flowing Exhaust. Magnaflow delivers the ultimate free flowing exhaust for the 1999-2004 GT, Bullitt and Mach 1 Mustangs with the Competition Cat-Back Exhaust System. By eliminating power robbing restrictions. this catback will put more horsepower and torque where it belongs - at the rear wheels.

Aggressive Muscle Car Sound. The Magnaflow Competition Cat-Back Exhaust System, with its pair of straight-through bullet-style competition mufflers, will give your Mustang the loud aggressive exhaust note of the muscle cars of yesteryear.

Quality Construction. Each piece is made from mandrel bent 2.5" stainless steel tubing for long life and a perfect fit. The system ends with brightly polished 3.5" stainless tips, that exit in the stock location for impressive good looks. The OEM-style barbed hangers are designed to ensure easy installation and precise fit.

Application. Made to be a direct bolt on, this Magnaflow Competition Cat-Back Exhaust System will bolt straight up to the factory Mid Pipe without any extra modifications required on 1999-2004 GT, 2001 Bullitt and 2003-2004 Mach 1 Mustangs, to give it a deeper, aggressive sound.

magnapacks vs slp loudmouth II I like the sound of both the magnaflow magnapacks and slp loudmouth II's because they both have a deep aggressive tone. I'm trying to decide between one or the other. As of right now my mustang is bone stock. I like the deep agressive tones but i don't want something that is extremely loud which is the only reason I'm afraid of the loudmouth II's. Which of the two exhuast systems are liuder/would be better suited for me?

skullix

  • MagnaPack over the Loudmouth for deep resonant tone. Loudmouth tends toward raspy more like a foreign exotic. Another option is Flowmaster Super 44's. Beautiful exterior tone with minimal cabin intrusion. I run those on one of my GT's and the other has MagnaFlows which have a different tone that is just as nice but I run larger exhaust tubing on that car so it's much louder. I'm planning to switch those out for Super 44's soon because I like their tone better. Just sayin'.

I live in California and the emmission regulations are strict. Will this competion catback exhaust pass the emmission test? I'm getting the BBK shorty headers, true dual adapter ( I have a v6 ) and these if they pass the emmission test. If not is it better to get the other magnaflow street catback exhaust?

Franky

  • Get in touch with your most reliable muffler shop before making any mods to a CA car. They can tell you what will pass and what won't. I made the mistake of buying a GT that didn't have all four cats. Couldn't pass emissions tests without investing about a grand to bring it back to almost stock configuration. However, I do have a friend who installs his stock set-up to pass smog, then when it passes he replaces it with his beasty exhaust system until it has to be smogged again.

Is it TOO loud? I have a '99 V6 Mustang & I was planning to combine this with some BBK shorty headers. Would it be extremely loud with both or would I be ok with just the Magnaflow exhaust?

DonaldDuck

  • The Magnaflow catback itself is pretty loud. I would say you would be fine with just the catback system. Keep in mind you need to order the right one, since this specific one is for the 8 cylinders. Regardless, at least for the first step, this catback is definitely loud enough.

will this bolt up to a bbk off road x-pipe the one on this site for the (99-04) GT

dearinger

  • Sure! The BBK O/R X-pipe is a direct replacement for your stock mid-pipe and this MagnaPack Catback will bolt directly to the new BBK mid-pipe. Hope this helps!

    Awesome but difficult

I bought this catback exhaust with the pacesetter H pipe adapter for my 2001 v6. The install was clean and clear for the most part until i got to the passanger side. I had not thought ahead and did not realize that i needed the passanger side hangar off a mustang GT for the exhaust to hang correctly. Without the tip hangars the exhaust hangs neatly beneath the v6 bumper, i do recommend either cutting or getting a gt bumper to give it a better look. Without the tip hangars you are fine but keep in mind the install is not exactly clear as day. When working with a v6 the body is the same but the lay out is slightly different so you may find yourself working on opposite sides of the diagram. On a v6 i must say this exhaust sounds amazing. It's not to loud at idle and when you accelerate it is incredible. I've had many compliments on the sound.

    Screamer

Got my magnapack catback in the mail today and installed it with my buddy in his driveway. I originally just had the magnapack mufflers welded up to stock piping with BBK O/R X and BBK LTs and that was loud but this is incredible. Has that deeper tone now with the 2.5" piping and really makes my car scream now. Installation was kind of frustrating at times but overall it was straight forward. Would definitely recommend this catback over others b/c it gives that real loud mustang sound, without sounding raspy up top.

    Installed on '01 Bullitt

I ordered this catback exhaust for my '01 Bullitt on a Sunday, and got it on a Wednesday. AM shipping is great. I chose to install this in my garage starting at 6pm because i was obviously pretty impatient and didnt want to wait till the next day to install it at work (i work at a dealership as a tech and have my own bay). It took me about 2.5 hours using a jack with jackstands and only hand tools. Some parts of install were a pain, mainly the final part where you attach all four parts on each side. But it was all completely worth it when i started it. Sounds amazing!!!!! Very deep and "growly", and reaaalllyy sounds good when you step on it. For anyone on the fence about this, just do it. You won't regret it!

    AWESOME EXHAUST!

This exhaust is great! It sounds great, loud but not too loud, and a great deep tone. The tips look great! The stainless steel is great! The install was fairly easy. Keep everything loose until the whole side is in place. Check the set screw on the tips as it tends to come loose at least once after first installed.

    Perfect Exhaust!!

I installed this in about 3 and a half hours with my brother. Everything was very simple and fit perfectly. This exhaust is VERY loud when you hit the gas, sounds amazing at around 2000 RPM. While at idle or just cruising you its not annoying loud. The only thing i noticed after install was that the clamps let a very small amount of air out, but i am gonna try and break them in then check again and hopefully that will completely stop. Overall I would recommend this product to anyone it is perfect for what i wanted.

The Sound is by far the Best!!! Pur American Muscle

I got this system yesterday and installed it today and what I can say is that all the research I did this is by far the best out there for the price. Gives it that American Muscle sound that every V8 should, and all I did was the cat back for now but there will be more to come. Trust me Ive been to every website and call everybody for what the best is for an exhaust system and AmericanMuscle is FASTER, CHEAPER, and WILLING to help you with every question. They are the EXPERTS!!!! ONE VERY HAPPY CUSTOMER FOR LIFE!!!!

    Magnapack FTW.

I will never buy another exhaust! I love the rich deep sound that this exhaust gives. Extremely loud and aggresive at WOT. At idle and low rpms can be kept quiet. Exactly the vintage sound i was going for on my 2004. Ive had the catback installed since 2006 and love it to death, still looks new after 79k

Not as loud as I thought

Love the exhaust, looks good sounds good and fit pretty good most of my trouble was trying to undo the rusted bolts on the hpipe and it was a little tricky getting the 2 bent pieces in off a floor jack, I had to stack 2 4x4s then jack it to get the angle needed to slide it in so be ready for that. But my final point is that it's really not all that much louder than the factory I mean it sounds better and might be like 2 or 3 clicks louder but not what I expected. 1 or 2 more clicks would of been been nice but hey at least the neighbors won't complain...

    Magnapack

This exhaust sounds absolutely awesome!!! My big down fall with it is that i cannot get the pipes to line up evenly with each other. They were not bent evenly from the factory or were damaged when shipped. I have lost 4 set screws due to vibrations and wish the bracket was welded to the tip... Besides that it sounds great.

    awesome for a headturning convertible

I just put these on a convertible gt and it sounds like, feels like a different car. It purrs at idle and rumbles nice to turn heads. When you jump on it people are looking to see where the noise is coming from. Totally recommend this product Much louder than stock and even in the convertible it is not annoying it sounds like a real muscle car.

    Magnapacks w/cats-off

I recently installed a magnapack system on my 04 Mustang GT. I was looking forward to hear that sound magnaflow produces, but that was not the case with the cats-on. Don't get me wrong, it has a nice tone to it at WOT, but not the sound I was looking for. A day after the install, I went to the local shop to remove the four cats the car comes with. I was completely impressed after the results of removal. Its deep, aggressive,it growls and it screams when I step on it. This was indeed the sound I was looking for and I dont regret it a minute a drive it.
