Review & Installation Video

Review & Install Video

Hey everyone I’m Justin with AmericanMuscle.com, checking out this Accel super coil on plug kit for all 2011 and up Mustang GTs. Accel’s been in the performance ignition game for over 40 years and continues to produce parts that aim to squeeze every ounce of horse power out of your car. This coil on kit is designed to give your new 50 motor a spark that is 10-15% stronger than the OEM coils. A stronger spark means a cleaner, more complete burning of fuel which means more horse power. So we want to see what kind of improvement these will get us but before we go install them, we want to get a baseline number down from our modified 2011 GT back there. Our 2011 GT is already equipped with abo s 302 intake manifold; Ford 90mm throttle body and a JLT cold air intake. Our baseline run on our modified 2011 gave us 379 horsepower, and 329 ft/lbs of torque. So now let’s change out the stock units in favor of the Accel coils. Install is very simple and should take you about 30 minutes using standard hand tools, these replace your factory coils so everything is completely plug and play. Now that we’ve got the coils installed let’s do another dyno run to see the difference that this kit makes. So with the Accel coils installed our modified 2011 GT made 384 horsepower and 333ft/lbs torque. This means a gain of 10 horsepower and 9ft/lbs of torque throughout the curve over our baseline. The Accel kit install easily and is a great compliment to any performance mods you might already have, or any performance mods you might do down the road. On our 2011 GT we were able to pick up 10 horsepower, and 10ft/lbs of torque throughout the entire curve, which is very impressive.

More Horsepower. The Accel Super Coil On Plug Kit makes more power then the wimpy stock OEM factory coils to help produce more horsepower from your 5.0L Coyote engine. They are a perfect match for stock engines and engines with minor performance upgrades.

Superior Design. Accel Coils feature an advanced bobbin technology, highly specialized silicone magnetic steel cores, along with optimized winding, resistance and turns ratios to delivery 10-15% more energy than the factory OEM coils. More energy equals a hotter spark that burns fuel more completely, releasing all it's potential energy, translating into better fuel economy and more power that you can feel.

Application. This set of eight Accel Super Coil On Plugs are designed as a direct performance upgrade for the 2011 to 2016 GT and Boss 302 Mustangs equipped with the Coyote 5.0L 4 valve V8 engine.

Application Note. These Accel Coil On Plugs are designed to fit the Coyote 5.0L engine that have a coil harness that features a Red Tab and Ears on the connector. 2016 Mustang owners will need to confirm the style of coil harness before ordering, as Ford made an electrical connector change on the 5.0L engines built after 2/23/16.

This product his a hit with me. Well worth the money. Easy install after you get to the clips

My 2014GT has had several tuning mods done to it with AM parts. I am very pleased with the coils and hotter plugs. Better acceleration and response. Would recommend.

Spark plug recommendation? What "heat" rating do you recommend with these coils? 6, 7 or 0? I want to buy the Iridium plugs. What do you think?

JDeso

  • 0 would be for Supercharged or Turbocharged applications. If your N/A just go with the Boss spark plugs.

  • the coils will work just fine on your supercharged mustang. it being supercharged makes no difference. if you are running higher boost levels this will help keep the spark from being blown out.

    accel coil on plug install

intalling these coil on plug kits is very easy. all it takes is an hour or so and a small screwdriver and 8mm wrench and if you have a tower brace a 1/2 inch socket with rachet. first remove the tower brace if you have one. then pop off the intottake cover and coil covers. the trickiest part is getting the wire connectors off the coils . first use the small screw driver to pull up the colored keepers then insert the screwdriver on the coil side of the connector to release the connector from the coil , use a small flat blade screwdriver and push down on the end of the connector and it will slide right off . use the 8mm socket to take off the bolt that holds the connector to the head then pull it out. do this eight times then install the new accel coils on in reverse order. i used wd -40 on the plug side of the new coils to ease installation .i havent put it on the dyno yet but will in the future to see what gains there were .

    Buy something else

I didn't see any better mileage at the pump or power gains on acceleration. If there are any its insignificant. Buy something else, I should have got a boss intake or gears.

Not worth the money in my opinion

contrary to other reviews i've read, I didn't have a noticeable HP gain or any improvement in gas mileage. Maybe I don't have the right mods? I have a cai, exhaust and a tune. Hopefully it compliments my future mods then. The installation was super easy (I am no mechanic) but for my 2013 GT, i would have rather put that money towards another mod.

    • Response from AmericanMuscle

The HP gains are approximately 10+ and 9+ TQ throughout the powerband. We have found that some people can feel a 10HP bump in power and some can't, as it's not very drastic. The power is still there nonetheless. You can check out the Bama Dyno sheet in the product images for more details as well.

Best bang for the buck on this site

Wow is what you will say after you start her up and go for your first ride. Smoother idle. Instant throttle response. I would do this first before you do other mods. You won't be sorry. Very easy to do. Take your time. Get some Di Electric grease. When you take off the connectors don't force it. Just slide the clip up then make sure you press in the tab and they slide right off. If you don't press it you will break the connector.

    Bad warranty

I'd love to give this product a great review, however I'm finding it difficult. I purchased my set of plugs in Feb '13 for an everyday driver '12 GT. Infrequently do I drive my car really hard. This past week my check engine light came on and informed me that my 7th cylinder was misfiring. ...move forward past all the troubleshooting, I found that the COP was the problem after putting the stock plugs back in. I called AM, the customer service agent was good, he tried to see if he could just send me one to replace it but it wasn't an option for him, he suggested calling Accel in hopes they'd do the right thing and replace it or at least offer a new one at cost or reduced price.... that didn't happen. Apparently they only warranty this product for 90 days and they aren't willing to do anything for a customer after that. After putting the stock plugs back in, I can definitely notice a difference, the plugs work.... but for how long? Not long enough with no warranty and a company that doesn't really stand behind their product.

    Totally worth the coin.

Very simple, & straight forward Installation, It has only been a week since putting these in, and I am very pleased! No; my mustang didn't gain 500 hp or make 50mpg, but A noticeable gain in power can be felt. Getting another 2-3 mpg so far, no really not jerking you around! car seems to warm up faster, and I never noticed how ragged my idle was before I popped these in, nice change there as well. I'm generally not one to drink the kool-aid, but this mod me happy, and my Stang deserves to have a happy driver

    Unreliable

Worked great at first, with a smoother idle and what felt like a little more pull. After about 8 months one died on me and I bought a replacement. Then a month later another one died. Switched them all back to stock. They are just too unreliable.

Good for about half a year...

I have a Roush Supercharged Mustang and put these coils in about half a year ago. Last friday my check engine light went on misfire in cylinder 4. The Accel coil went bad and i put back in stock coils and check engine light went off and runs great. Not worth the headache of buying these.

    Bad Set

Well, I ordered these ignition coils last year, and about 2 days ago my engine light came on, reading a cylinder #5 misfire. So I went to pull the plug and SNAP, it broke off at the boot leaving half of the plug inside the spark plug hole. I thought it was just me being rough with them, so I took it to the shop and the techs had the same problem, they snapped 5 plugs. So I reinstalled the stock coils and everything is good to go now. I will say that up until that point these coils were good, but the build quality is very poor. Maybe I just got a bad batch, but I'm very disappointed in this product. By the way, I have ordered tons of amazing stuff from American Muscle, and this is the first time I got a bad product. Overall I think I just got a bad kit from Accel.

    ACCEL COILS- 2013 GT

Easy to install. less than 30 minutes. I used a tiny flat head screw driver to get under the stock coil clips. They fit perfect and I did notice better idle of the engine. Perfect addition to my Boss 302 intake. Very happy with increased performance. If you want to improve performance of your GT, put this on your wish list!

They do what they are supposed to do

I feel like I dont even need to mention anything about the installation because it was THAT easy. The real benefit that I like was the idle change. It is so smooth now and the engine just seems to feel healthier. With all of the problems that people claim they have with these cars, I feel like having a smoother idle is worth the money. Im not sure about the performance gains because my tires never hook up.
