Review & Install Video

Hey I’m Justin with AmericanMuscle.com, and this is my breakdown of BBK’s long tube headers, available in your choice of either ceramic, or chrome, fitting the 1996-2004 manual Mustang GT. Long tube headers are one of those mods on the long list of basic bolt ons, that aim to make more power than the factory part they’re replacing. In this case, these long tube headers from BBK are going to replace the ultra restrictive cast iron factory manifolds, which are notorious for choking out the flow of exhaust. Taking a closer look at the headers themselves, you’ll see BBK went with mandrel bent 1-5/8” tubing which should definitely help your flow of exhaust. In addition we’re also looking at laser cut flanges, as well as pre-welded bungs for your O2 sensor as well as your EGR. One thing I did want to point out with these headers that I noticed right away, was that BBK included a notch for the steering shaft, to prevent any rubbing or any interference. This is huge because some other header companies do not offer this, and therefore you might run into some fitment issues. Finally BBK gives you the option of picking these long tubes up in a chrome finish, or for a few bucks more you can opt for the ceramic coating. That ceramic coating is going to offer a couple of different benefits, first, performance, ceramic dissipates heat a little better than a stainless header, so it’s going to be slightly better performance wise and it’s going to be slightly better at reducing under hood temperatures, which is always a good thing. In addition that ceramic coating is also going to be better at reducing corrosion, which is only going to increase the longevity of the header itself. The final difference is appearance, both of these header options will offer their own unique look as they age. First up, we have the ceramics, they’re going to stay this bright silver color pretty much their entire life, on the other hand we have the chrome version, which as they heat cycle, tend to turn a dark blue/purple color which some people might like, others may not. Installing any set of long tubes can be a little intense, so if you don’t think you have the mechanical skill, or the tools to get this one done, I’d leave this job in the hands of the professionals. However if you are going to do the install yourself, just leave a full day to get everything bolted up properly, just to be safe. Keep in mind, whenever you install a set of long tubes, you will need to address your Mid Pipe. In this case in order to run these long tubes from BBK, you will need to run a flanged and shorty Mid Pipe. BBK recommends their shorty H-Pipe just for the best fitment and gains. So if you’re looking for a set of long tubes for your 96-04 GT, with the option of going for a ceramic or chrome finish, then be sure to check out these long tubes from BBK right here at AmericanMuscle.com

Increase horsepower and torque. Bolt on extra horsepower and torque that you can feel throughout the entire RPM band with a set of BBK Long Tube Headers. These BBK Chrome Long headers will improve your mustangs exhaust flow increasing your pony's horsepower and torque.

Quality Construction. BBK crafted these Long Tube Headers to last using one piece laser cut 3/8" flanges, free flowing mandrel-bent 1 5/8" CNC mandrel bent tubing and are completed with BBK's show quality bright chrome finish.

Application. These long tube headers are designed to fit the 1996-2004 4.6L Mustangs GT with a manual transmission only. These BBK headers include high-quality mounting hardware, gaskets, and instructions. The BBK long tube headers require a flanged end shorty midpipe in order to function properly. BBK recommends using a BBK shorty H-Pipe or X-Pipe for the best performance gains.

Technical Note. This BBK product is not legal for use in emission restrictive states.

Ask a Question

will these bbk long tube headers work with a borla atak catback exhaust? and do i need the shorty mid pipe with it?

kenny

  • Yes these headers will work if you buy the shorty midpipe, Catted or no cat is up to you and your tuning. If you must pass emissions then get the Catted x-pipe.

Would these with the BBK shorty Catted H pipe sound good? I really Want a Deep Exhaust Note thats not overbearing... I live in a town house so getting on my neighbors bad side every morning isnt on my todo list.

Stealthy

  • This isn't for you, this is for the person trying to get every little bit of power out of his car for track use or the guy who wants a race car like sound. Stick with the shorty headers and mufflers and catted x or h pipe.

Do i need the O2 extention? I have a 2004 GT but it doesn't state which models need the extension. I just want to be sure so I don't spend the extra money on it and end up not needing it.

I have a 2003 Mustang GT with Full flow master with an H pipe. What long tube headers would be the best for my Car?

ST03

  • The BBK Chrome Long Tube Headers (96-04 GT) will be a great header for your car. However with doing long tube headers you will want to match the same brand header as mid-pipe.

    sound awesome

put a set of LT and bbk x pipe with high flow cats and this set sounds sick. the performance gain was about 10-15 rear wheel but throttle response was extremely noticable. installation was a pain..... i would have them installed unless u know what your doing

    Bolt lenght

I had a machanic install my headers, about 4 hours in they call and told me that the bolts that go with where to long and they needed to buy different ones to continue, Other then that great product. Sound quality wasn't what was expected but the power difference is very noticable

    Both negative and positive

As previously read by another review, BBK has imporved thier packaging methods. But Ive found the quality of these headers to be far from being a quality product. Right out of the box, I noticed rust patches between the collectors, and behind most of the inner pipes. And you can clearly see the bending "scuff" marks under the chrome. Overall, not the best for quality. HOWEVER, The performace with a custom tune, is rather impressive. And they do sound great pounding the roads. But if youre looking into a set of L.T headers, save an extra 150, buy the cermaic. You get what you pay for.

    01 cobra

i installed mine during an engine swap so i didnt have to deal with reaching the bolts inside the car. kinda disappointed that i had to cut a couple bolts to clear the flange and pipes. one i had to cut so short it barely had enough thread to tighten. i would recommend using a drill bit the size of the bolt head to create a recessed hole.

    Hard work pays off

Kind of a pain in the a$$ to install, I truely think it would have been easier to drop the cradle to install these. Payoff is worth it though. Sound great and noticeable difference in power gains.

    Bbk long tube headers

I got my order today of headers. I was excited but very disappointed how bbk packed my chrome headers. It looked like they just tossed them in there and taped it up. But in all my headers came put just find. Can't wait to put it on but disappointed in the packing of my parts

    great

these headers are great. tight fit, but match up well with the bbk H pipe. sound is nasty, and the performance gain was very noticable, helps in 3rd gear the most.

Good Quality! Bang for your Buck

Product got to me very quickly. Less than a week. Everything in the box ready to go. I decided to take the challenge and throw them in myself. I'm an automotive student so i did it at my school. Time it took with a lift was about 12 hours or so. The install instructions are pretty poor. One thing that is not mentioned. You will have to pull the dipstick tube. otherwise the new headers on the driver side simply won't go on. When installing the driver side headers make sure to have the dipstick/headers installed together otherwise you'll spend are hard time fishing it back in. Not fun. Overall great product! BBK did well.

    Sweet Headers

First off want to say the performance gain is awesome (applied with o/r shorty H). Secondly these are the biggest pain in the a** to install!! I would seriously recomend having these done by someone else or a pro. It is an extremely tight fit and nearly impossible to get to some of the header bolts (removal of K member is a must). Never the less am very impressed by the throttle response and the sheer launch I get out of these headers. Sounds sick and look awesome!!

A Pain but are they worth it?

So I installed these long tube headers on my 99 Mustang GT about a year ago, and they sound great and the gain was great. Today I am replaceing the clutch in the Mustang and well the headers are built a little to narrow to get the transmission out without almost completely removing the RH header. So a 4.5 hr job turned into a 7hr job. So you decided if these are worht the trouble or maybe get a different brand. I like and dislike these headers.
