Review & Install Video

Hey I’m Justin with AmericanMuscle.com and I’m checking out these flip down license plate holders, available either motorized or manually operated, fitting all 79 and newer Mustangs. If you live in one of the many states that burden your ride with the unsightly front license plate, I totally feel your pain, not only is it not very attractive, but it also forces you to drill holes into your front bumper cover which is never a good thing. This flip down license plate holder is a great way to hide that front plate whenever you’re at a car show or your next spy mission, and is available in 2 different options: a motorized version that operates with the simple touch of a button, or a more budget friendly manual version. Both options mount to the underside of the front bumper but ultimately it’s up to you to decide where you’d like to place the kit. As you can see on our 2013 GT behind me we had the kit installed dead center on our front bumper. I have seen some of our customers install it on either the left or right side which does look good as well. Depending on which option you decide to go with your install time may vary slightly, for instance the manual version requires no wiring whatsoever, therefore you can expect to get that one done in about 30 minutes, on the other hand the motorized version does require a small amount of wiring in addition to the small work needing to be done underneath the car, therefore you can expect to spend about an hour on that one. Either way, if you should need any help whatsoever, you can always reference the detailed instructions on this product page. Even though Johnny Law may require a front plate in your state doesn’t mean you have to display it all the time, right? Well, if you’re looking for a cool way to hide that front plate at your next show, be sure to check out one of these flip down licence plate holders right here at AmericanMuscle.com

Great Custom Touch. Lets face it a front license plate is a big eyesore on any Mustang at a car show, but what if there was a way to hide it at a show and have it reappear when your ready to go? Well now you can with the Motorized Flip Down License Plate Holder from AmericanMuscle.

Motorized convenience. The Flip Down License Plate Holder installs under your front bumper so that when you press the included key fob your license plate retracts down under your front bumper for a clean sleek show winning appearance. And when your ready to go back on the roads press the key fob again and your plate returns to it's upright position for everyone to see.

Application. This Motorized Flip Down License Plate Holder is designed to fit on all year Ford Mustangs with it's universal mounting kit. Intended for show use only.

Note: Not compatible with the CS/Boss Front Fascia with Splitter, Roush Body Kit, 03-04 Cobra Chin Spoiler or Mach 1 Chin Spoilers.

Can this kit be modded to use a hard-wired switch? I don't want another fob, but have a switch in mind that I'd like to hard-wire this plate kit to, but not sure if that's doable. If the fob must be used, could I wire that to a switch? I have an install shop in mind because Im expecting that a custom bracket will be needed and they can do any wiring, but figured I'd see if anyone else with this kit has done this or knows if its doable.

Can this be operated while driving? The stock fob (or key with buttons) is disabled when driving, and I think even when the car is on but parked. So if I am driving I can't operate the locks or accidentally pop the trunk from the key. But say I get going and forget to flip my plate back up... 1. Will the license plate remote function when the car is on? 2. If so, will it function while driving? 3. Is it sturdy enough to flip up and down while in motion without being affected by air turbulence? Thanks in advance for the help!

Gbynumsg1

  • I am sure it can, but it is probably not wise. The motor doesn't look to be made for that kind of force against it. The plate platform itself is sturdy enough, as it is made for driving, and hides for shkws, etc.

Question Resolved

After a few times of the license plate folding out like it should it would go very slow and the plate would come almost all the way out then before it flips up it will just stop as if it lost power. How do I fix this problem?

Ford123

  • I am sorry to hear about the issue you are facing. It sounds to me like the motor for the license plate holder is not getting the amount of power it should be getting right now. I would go back and check all of your connections and try to test the amount of power getting to the motor.

Can this front license plate holder be used with front splitters Im strongly considering a front splitter for my 13 GT, Michigan has a proposed bill to require front license plates. If the bill passes and front plates become required, will this kit be able to be used with a front splitter?

    License Plate Holder

Works great and wasn't difficult to install only problem I have is within the first week one of the remotes for the license plate broke. It just stopped working also the wires could have been a little shorter, lots of excess wire. Other than that it's a great product and looks very good and always brings awe to people's faces when you make it appear or disappear.

    Keeping the local police happy

This is a good product, but if you are buying it for a GT500, plan on spending about 3 hours to really do it right. There is not an easy way to mount the bracket properly. I found it easiest to remove the chin spoiler and make the slight modifications and mount the assembly on my work bench. I bought additional black split wire loom from my local parts store and ran all wires in a loom from the battery all the way to the underside to the motor. I also wrapped the looms in black tape to match the way the factory did it and ran them side by side with factory loom where possible. While you are at the parts store, pick up some two sided 3M tape to mount the receiver strategically to the inside fender. In my case, right next to the fusebox. The final product looks factory original and the bracket itself works flawlessly. If you need a front license plate for legal reasons, this is a great solution, just plan on taking a little longer than the listed hour install time.

    Flip Down License Plate Holder

I like to keep my 06 as stock looking as possible, who doesn't want a retractable plate. Once I thought out where I was going to put it, ( centered of course ) installing it was a breeze. I bought a take off nose from another GT, so as not to deal with the holes already drilled ( thats another story ) I didn't care much for the flex type brackets so I tossed them and constructed my own using a wedge of rubber (like a door stop). The angle allowed the glide rail to be level to the ground and made for a very tight fit.I didn't want it ripping off at the track. Wiring was easy to hide in the factory loom and the receiver mounts right near fuse box. I've had this for several months now and it still turns heads when ever I activate it. The only downside is forgetting to raise the plate before you start to drive. If you live in NJ you know what a hassle that can be. If someone could build a timer circuit that would raise and lower it with the ignition that would be nice. Yes my car is lowered so watching where I park is a major effort. But worth it.

    Harder Than It Looks

I got a fix-it-ticket and decided that this was the best way to go to keep the clean front look. The 2010 GT has a rubber seal on the front fascia that doesn't allow a clean look. I had to cut the seal and i drilled to make way for the holder. Works great and a nice ice breaker at car shows.

If you're considering it, just buy it.

I've had the motorized flip plate on my car for five months now. The car is an ungaraged daily driver that sees all sorts of weather and car washes. The only minor thing I've found "wrong" is after a car wash, I sometimes have to make sure the plate backing is straight on the track or it's unable to slide smoothly. Two seconds to tap it back on track and you're good to go. If you're on the fence I'd definitely recommend just going for it.

    Motorized Flip up/Down License Plate

If you have a low or lowered vehicle, I would NOT suggest this motorized flip up/down license plate bracket. Yes it's cool, while your car is parked, however, the bracket with license plate mounted sits an additional two inches lower, which makes a lowered Mustang almost impossible to drive without scraping the bracket while driving, especially when pulling into or out of parking lots that have a slightly raised entrance. The bracket is constructed out of a flimsy metal and each time it scrapes against the ground the bracket becomes distorted and the plate will not function. You will spend hours under your car attempting to straighten out the bracket so the plate can operate smoothly up and down the rail without malfunctioning.. I finally removed it from my car. I got tired of wasting my time attempting to straighten out the bracket so it would function correctly.

    Plate Ninja!

As the local law enforcement cracks down on having a front license plate, this product works great! Push a button on the remote and "where did that come from?" Push it again, and "Where did it go?" Easy wiring instructions and fits perfectly inside my ground effects kit, so I don't have to display my plate when rolling into car shows! I haven't run a front plate in YEARS, but since the PoPo is trying to generate more funds for California, it was time to go legit.

    Flip Down License Plate Holder

This took some time to install using the alternate method in the instructions. After bending 2 "Z" small brackets and drilling 3 holes the mounting was pretty smooth. Wired it directly to the battery and ran the wires down the passengers side. It works great and I can now display a customized plate instead of the ugly license plate at cruise nights and car shows.

good if u don't want holes in your bumper or a front plate on car 24/7

I bought this for my 04gt mainly because I'm 100% against a front plate and hate the buck tooth it gives a car. my car is lowered 2inches in the front and i have the mach chin spoiler so i knew i couldn't mount it on the bottom of the bumper which was fine cause i wasn't going to do it that way anyway. I just cut the two little plastic strips and mounted it dead center of the bumper, so now when its up it actually looks like the plate is mounted on the car. Cutting those two plastic strips didn't hurt visual appearance either. The plate hides it really well up or down.

Flip Down License Plate Holder, Motorized

Item does what it is needed, instructions aren't all that clear, very thankful that it had pictures. For the money, I thought it would be better, motor seems to be crappy, it's not very stable. If your buying for mustang, be prepared to anchor this semi heavy product to your plastic under the car. Not stable. It would have better to have gotten the one with out the motor. This is a poor product really. Im very disappointed in American Muscle for charging so much for this. I buy everything from AM, and I will continue to do so, but since I have installed, I can't return, otherwise I would.

    Too low

It was cool to show people and a great idea, but the only place to put it is on the very bottom of the front bumper, you go near a parking spot with a blocker or a low driveway it gets crushed and mangled. Especially for someone with a lowered car. If they made this to put in the lower grill are it would be perfect but for now a flawed design for the 05-09's. For me a waste of $130.

Great plate holder and easy to install!

Great product. The install didn't take me long at all. Read the instructions and if you can do the install in about an hour. Comes with all the the parts needed to install on many different front end variations. The only think I noticed is when raising and lowering the plate was a bit choppy as it went into and left the full up position. I just greased up the tracks and it runs smooth now.
