Review & Install Video

What's going on, guys? Adam here with AmericanMuscle.com, and today I'm bringing you my review of the Rear Seat Delete Kit in black for all '05 to '14 Mustang Coupes. So if you're the type of S197 Coupe owner looking for a way to drop some weight to get more power to the ground for the track, or if you're just looking for a sporty two-seater look, then a rear seat delete kit might be for you. I do wanna point out, before we jump into details, that this kit here is only gonna be for the S197 Coupe owners. So if you're rocking a soft top convertible, this kit here will not be for you, but I'm sure there are other options out there on the market. Now the guys going to the track often enough to really wanna shed some weight typically aren't taxiing people around in their back seats, which means the rear seats are actually just dead weight. For those S197 Coupe owners out there who are just looking for a two-seater sport styling, this really does, appearance-wise, give you a natural black finish to look like your Mustang came from the factory with just two seats. This way you can stop being the taxi, and you'll have an excuse to get out of being designated driver when you go out responsibly with your friends. As far as the materials go for the Rear Seat Delete Kit, it's made of a quarter-inch thick plywood wrapped in premium black upholstery to ensure that clean, natural look. When it comes to the appearance aspect, it looks really good, blends in with the interior of the car, and will look very natural. When it comes to the quality and build, though, I'll be honest, it does leave a little bit to be desired. Now like I said, it is made of a quarter-inch thick plywood, which in all honesty is pretty flimsy. It doesn't support too much weight, so you wanna be careful when you're getting back there to clean your rear windshield. Now you wanna keep in mind that this was made to reduce weight, so if they made this wood any thicker, you'd just be replacing the seat weight with the same weight in wood, which would kinda defeat the purpose. The only other complaint I have about this kit is that the Rear Seat Delete on the back doesn't necessarily bolt on as easily as the front. Now it does include plastic clips and all the hardware necessary, but some people have said that the plastic clips for the back don't exactly line up with the holes on the vehicle. So it might be a good idea to head out to a hardware store and pick up some longer bolts. Measure the size. You'll be able to figure out which bolts you need, and you'll get it to work properly. And all the installation should go smoothly from there. The price of this kit may seem a little bit high, considering the materials, but it comes in right around the $150 mark. Now off the bat it does seem a little bit pricey, but you do wanna consider that it takes all the hassle of buying the products, materials, measuring, cutting, stapling, all of that has been taken out of your hands and done for you with this kit. One thing I definitely wanna touch on, and I did talk about it a little bit earlier, is that since the materials are pretty thin, they are not meant to hold any weight. It's not a safe seat for anybody, not even a heavy pet. You definitely wanna keep this in mind. So the installation of a Rear Seat Delete Kit is pretty straightforward. It just requires a couple of hand tools including a couple of sockets. You'll start by removing the lower cushions by releasing the clips that are between the cushions and the carpeted cross-member below. Once you do that, they'll lift right up and out. So from here, you wanna fold down the top cushion and remove the bolts next to the U-shaped latches. From there, you can fold the seat back up and remove the four bolts by the lower hinge, and remove the back seats. At this point, you'll have the option of removing the seat belt, which is not entirely necessary. But if you do wanna do it, this would be your chance because once you pass this point you won't be able to take them out. To install the lower portion of the Rear Seat Delete, it's as simple as entering the pins into the holes provided. Now, you may need to remove the plastic clips on the wiring harness underneath just to make this sit flush and tight. The installation of the back portion may give you some trouble, as I mentioned before. Now you wanna make sure, once you get it installed, that the back portion is not wedged behind it but fits on top of the lower end. This install is pretty straightforward. You'll be looking at spending about an hour of your time with some simple hand tools. And I definitely give it a one out of three wrenches on the Difficulty Scale. Just to quickly wrap things up, guys, if you're looking for an easy way to get rid of those rear seats, either to delete some weight for the track or just to get that cool two-seater styling, then this Rear Seat Delete Kit in black may be for you. And you can get yours right here at AmericanMuscle.com.

will this hold a custom speaker box? I was wondering if this seat delete kit would hold a custom speaker box and subs. i dont want to sacrifice trunk space just to have subs in my car so i figured i could get a seat delete kit as a compromise.

JakeAdams

  • It would but you would have to customize the seat delete for structural support as the kit is made of 1/4 plywood and not designed to hold the additional weight.

Will this fit over an x brace without modification?

996Turbo

  • Depending on the X brace you may need some modification, however the X braces we sell will fit over the Rear Seat Delete Kit - Coupe - Black (05-14 All). Both of these X braces work with this seat delete: Steeda Rear Seat X-Brace w/ Plate - Coupes (05-14 All) (Item #16251) http://www.americanmuscle.com/steeda-seatdelete-xbrace-0514coupe-kit.html Steeda Rear Seat X-Brace - Coupes (05-14 All) (Item #16250) http://www.americanmuscle.com/steeda-seatdelete-xbrace-0513coupe.html

will this work with the backseat x brace

Brantley

  • Judging from the pictures of customer installs, the X brace will interfere with the top half of the rear seat delete kit. The steeda chassis x brace (next item listed in the same section) appears to fit behind the seat and shouldn't interfere. Same price, different mounting location. Good luck.

    Rear Seat Delete

I ordered the rear seat delete for my 2012 boss 302. The package contains 2 flimsy veneer plywood pieces with thin black carpet glued to them and 4 plastic pin snaps. About $10 in off the shelf materials. The upper veneer pin snap holes did not align with the rear upper seat pin snap holes, so I discarded the upper panel in favor of a cargo net. The bottom panel fit rather awkwardly, although the pin snaps aligned with the previous holes.

    Disappointed

Very disappointed. Product is cheap and low quality. Was suppose to be easy to install, however, the holes that came pre-drilled for pins did not match up and pins did not secure boards properly. Had to drill new holes and buy bolts to replace pins. In my opinion, if you have any experience with a skill saw and drill, just make your own. Its just cheap plywood with cheap carpet stapled to it. Not worth $150.

    good product

is exactly what it says, a rear seat delete. only problem with it was the fit. the pins that secure it could have been bigger to make sure it "sticks" in the removed bolt holes. other than that, good product, nicely made.

    It ok

If your looking for something to just cover the space its great but the wood is very thin and seems like its going to break jus putting it in. The holes on the bottom piece lined up perfect but the top piece they didnt so had to modify it some. All in all a decent product although you could do it yourself just getting some ply board and felt stapling it to the board which is what this is.

    Looks Good

Easy install and looks great. Just be careful when installing not to put any weight on bottem piece. 1/4 inch wood breaks easily, no I didn't break mine!

    Could be better,

The kit itself was alright, I expected the boards to be a bit thicker but they are sturdy enough. The bottom piece went in fine with the pushpins; but I would suggest going and buying longer bolts to use at the top before you even start. The top piece fit very poorly and the pushpins wouldn't even reach the holes. Buying the bolts remedied this though.

    REAR SEAT DELETE

This kit seems to get a lot of bad reviews for some reason. I personally dont think that it was anything bad except that it was a little pricey for what it is. The wood that the product is made out of is extremely flimsy, but it is also very lightweight and if no pressure is ever put on it, nothing is going to break. I had no problems with the push pins, and everything lined up fine for me. The material over the wood matches the cars rug flooring very well. I think that it makes the car look much sportier and cleaner on the inside and shed a few pounds while doing so.

    Cool Product

Installs very easily and quickly. The screws that are provided are plastic, the two for the bottom piece worked fine. The two for the top piece were not long enough. I simply bought some long screws (8mm-1 25 x 50mm) and washers and it looks great. (note: bottom screws are a different size then top screws if you want to replace them as well)

    cheap, cheap, cheap

When I was pulling out the rear seat in my 2012 Boss 302 I was thinking how cheaply built the seat was ... and then I pulled out this. You can't get much cheaper than this. Sure it looks pretty good when installed, but the holes for the back part did not line up where they needed to be and the plastic push pins they give you are not large enough in diameter to hold the back part in. How hard would it have been to put 4 holes in the back to fill all 4 holes that are there and use a little large push pin? Or better yet use a bracket and 4 bolts that will hold the back part in much better? I had to adjust the holes with a jig saw and then I used bolts with washers to make sure it would not come loose every time I drove the car.

    Not really worth it

All this is, is a thin piece of wood with carpet stapled onto it. The little clips dont even hold the boards in place, they're constantly falling off. You could probably run down to your home depot and or hobby loby and buy the materials yourself for less than 100$

    Rear Seat Disappointment :(

Well I have to admit this was super excited to receive my rear seat delete kit. I was expecting a sturdy carpeted kit. What I got was something I could have made at lowe's for way less than $50 bucks. Don't get me wrong the appearance of the product was great but what I had hoped for was way way off. For a Cosmetic Weight Saving Look Its Great ! But if you want to put anything on top of this the board is so thin it seams it would not hold up long at all. This Rear Seat Delete Kit is for anyone who is looking for a Cosmetic look ONLY !!

    rear seat delete

I was disappointed that the plywood was thin, there was no carpeting on trunk side of upper piece, and the push pins were too small in diameter to hold the top piece. I used stainless bolts on top piece after carpeting trunk side of it. I also made brackets to secure the two panels together where they meet to give it halfway decent stability. It was better than building it from scratch but ithe kit could stand major improvements.

    Another way to install it.

I used wall anchors to plug the old threaded holes and then a sheetrock screw with a washer to hold it in place. I did this for two reasons. The stock panel retainers suck and i wasnt going to drill another hole and use other review's recommended threaded bolts to fix the issue. The wall anchors and screw worked great as it didnt have to be dead on to screw in. And i made it look good with all the same color washers and screws. Just my .02

not what you expect from AM

Poorly crafted, does not fit well, had to remove carpeting and cut my own piece for the top section as it wasnt even close to fitting and was not cut right. looked very poorly crafted before I made some adjustments. Also had to buy my own washers and bolts.

    Back Seat Delete

Once install looks good just like photos on web. Push in plastic fasteners do not work that well, for the price of this kit there should be a better way to secure it. I would like to see it bolted in and caps install on bolt heads. Top panel has threads available where seat backs are. Good idea poor design.

    Ditch that rear seat!

The seat-delete kit gives the car a more serious appearance, and sheds a few pounds in the process. I am not sure how they came up with the "40lb weight saving" claim, as I was only to measure a 10lb weight loss. The factory back seat is very light to begin with. Fit and finish is satisfactory. I did have to enlarge the rear mounting holes to get the vertical section to line-up with the factory mounting holes.
