Much better than Roush shifter

Previous owner had put in an aftermarket Roush shifter less than 10,000 miles ago ,which was very sloppy and too tall for my preference ..replaced it with Barton shifter and all is fine now

  • The TR-3650 has internal stops in the transmission, so you don't have to worry about adjusting stops on the shifter.

Barton Shifter - how much taller is the handle/ball over stock I was wondering how much taller the Barton Stick/Ball combo is versus the stock knob height. Thanks - Kevin

flexmiller

  • I got one of these for Christmas and the Flat stick is about an 1" taller than the stock shifter. The round shaft with either the Ball or Thumb is almost the same height as stock.

do you need to use a jam nut with the flat stick handle with a aftermarket knob?

Jstang17

  • The handles have a 12mm x 1.25 thread pattern which is the same as stock. Most shift knobs that follow this same thread should fit. Depending on the style of the aftermarket shift knob, you make need to use a jam nut.

    Beats the competition

This Barton shifter is the second short throw shifter that I've had in my Mustang. I tried another more popular shifter, but it left me unsatisfied with it's excessive NVH and high effort. I had heard of the Barton shifter, and I was glad to see it is now available from American Muscle. I ordered it online from American Muscle, and I have just installed it. Installation was easy with the car on jack stands. I followed the instructional video on the included DVD, and the install went very smoothly. 10mm and 13mm ratcheting combination wrenches are a huge help during installation. After I finished, I took the car out for a test drive. Shifts are easy, short, and smooth with a nice solid click into each gear. The soft, vague, and sloppy feel that was present with the stock shifter is a thing of the past now that the Barton is installed. The Barton doesn't suffer from the excessive NVH and high effort of the competitor's shifter either. I like having the option of the OE stick to keep the stock look, or the Barton flat stick for that cool retro look and feel. I have made many mods to my Mustang, but this Barton shifter is the best mod yet. I love it.

    From Sloppy To Solid

I purchased this Barton Shifter From AM due to my past purchase history being excellent and the fast free shipping. I have to say the Sloppiness is gone i like how the Barton just clicks into each gear. Now each shift feels more crisp leave an more confident shift know being locked out of third or missing third is a thing of the past. AM ansewered all my questions and even went out of their way to be sure each answer they gave was accurate. I like having the option of the stock shifter are the blade Barton stick which i have installed. My only complaint is that upon receiving the shifter the package was pretty beat up and the installation disk was in pieces it could have been packaged alittle better for the money your shelling out for it.. All in all great bang for the buck and great service from a company who prides themself in customer satifaction..

    Barton Short Shifter

upon receiving this shifter I noticed that the quality was excellent. installation went without any problem as the fit was perfect. The throw of this new shifter is noticeably shorter than stock and has greatly reduced the problem of missing 2nd and 3rd gears at the track. There is also no additional road noise after installing this. My primary concern with this shifter is that there is just as much "slop" when in gear as there was with the stock shifter, a problem American Muscle said would go away with a short shifter. I found this to be untrue. Overall, I feel that this Barton shifter is overpriced compared to its competition. This is the 1st product from American Muscle I'm unhappy with and do not recommend this to anyone else looking for a new shifter.

    Thats much better!

Removal of the stock shifter was dead easy, this is a job for any backyard mechanic. The only tool I did not have on hand was a deep 10mm socket which is required for the rear mounting bolts. Check what you need and go for it! Barton's shifter arrived packaged very well, 2 shifter arm options, all the bits required plus an install DVD. Very high quality piece machined out of stout aluminum. Compare the Barton to the stock shifter and you will be a glad you made the purchase. Installing the Barton was pretty easy, though there is not a lot of room to wiggle due to the dimensions of the shifter, width, etc. but in the end a great fit. The shifting is ~30% less in throw, slightly higher effort and feels much more positive when selecting the next gear. The shifter was quite stiff to begin with, but has mellowed over the last 3 days and I am very happy with the results! It makes driving the GT a lot more fun and is great upgrade choice.

    Barton shifter builds confidence.

Installed easily with a jack and stands. Remove center trim, 2 nuts and 2 bolts and about 30 minutes later you will be shifting with more confidence. I know exactly when I am fully in gear and release the clutch knowing it won't grind. The shorter throw is excellent as I no longer have to reach to get into 5th gear. I am very happy with my new Barton short throw shifter on my. 08 GT.

    Night & Day

I purchased an aftermarket shifter prior to picking up my GT Mustang from the dealership and installed it immediately. Well after wrestling with it for a year (no idea why) I broke down and bought the Barton shifter. I am blown away in comparison to the "brand" name shifter I tossed in the trash. This Barton shiter is flawless in style and performance. The first time I nailed 3rd after warming the car up and jogging through the gears my car lit the tires for the first time in 3rd. most times I would wrestle it in 3rd without being able to power into gear as it would bind and sometimes miss the gear change completely. This shifter is the best part I have bought in my 35 years of hot rodding. It is the real deal and a solid investment!!! Thank you Barton your product rocks!!!!!!

    Amazing Shifter

WOW this shifter is great. I try to buy the best so after reading all the reviews I bought Barton. I am completely happy with it. The throw reduction is great and the quality is wonderful. The most difficult part of the instillation is getting the rubber boot back on correctly. Love it.

    Quick Install

Included video and with a lift and two mechanics I installed this in less than an hour. Shifts are shorter but notchy at first until I learned where the points were. First to second is the biggest difference. First now looks like it is still in neutral. Reverse was hard to find until I learned where it was too.

    Excellent product

This product is beautifully designed. Not to bad to install and defiantly worth the fair price and time to put it in. Nice stiff and crisp shift, missing gears are almost impossible. Hearing a pop noise is good when shifting into gears to know you've successfully shifted. This product is great and I would recommend to any manual transmission lovers. Not to short to take away from the shift but just enough to shift and make a quicker shift. Makes changing lanes a breeze

    Great upgrade from stock.

I bought the Barton shifter to help resolve sloppiness in my stock shifter. A vast improvement in the shift quality. The short throw makes shifting more precise, and fun to drive.

    Barton short throw

I like the quality of this product. Shifting is alot of fun eliminates the long throw from 2nd to 3rd. Only complaint is the boot in the 2010 does not work without modification. took a couple hours to install on Jack stands.

This along with my Rousch CAI were my first mods approximately 5 months ago. This shifter is solid, notchy and I love it. Short throws for quick, tight shifting. Great feel to this Barton shifter and I definitely recommend it.

    Now that's Short

My stock shifter "Thumb" was starting to crack, top falling off, so I figured why not buy a short shifter that came with a new knob? I read about most of the shifters here and on other sites, and decided this was the best fit for me. I'm 6'4" with long legs and 1st, 3rd and 5th was a bit of reach for me with the seat in a comfortable position for the legs. This shifter, with the flat stick, moved those almost back to where neutral was and with the seriously shorter throw, I didn't hit the seat with my elbow when looking for 2nd or 4th gear, as they are still pretty much in the same position as stock. I do agree with others, with the stiffer return springs there is no way you will miss a 2nd to 3rd shift. That said with the left to right throw is shorter as well and I too had issues finding reverse, at first. I was just used to "reaching for the door handle" to get there and now its right there on the console. I have been driving with the since Christmas, and the only issue is it makes you want to drive faster. As for the install, the removal of stock shifter was easy, and the only obstacle on the install was getting the front mount around an arm that sticks out on the top of the transmission. The only bolts I took out held the old shifter in, and didn't really see a reason to pull out anything else. I did have the console off as I was installing the new Radio/GPS unit I got as well.

    Simply amazing!!

I'm incredibly impressed with this shifter!! I did the install myself and while the stock shifter was a pain to get out (I didn't lover the driveshaft) the Barton shifter went in no problem!! The shifts are short and you can feel the engagement of the gears every time. I will say that initially I had to use some muscle to change gears ESP in reverse. But after driving for two weeks the shifter either has loosened up or I've gotten used to it. I'd definitely go with Barton again if I'm in the market for a short throw!

Replaced another aftermarket shifter and world of difference

Had another aftermarket shifter installed that had worn the brass bushing. This was hard to find first gear and sloppy third gear shifts. After the Barton was installed I could not believe how good it shifts. No trouble on the first and third and I like the solid handles. Also nice is the rear bracket which is extremely heavy duty. While more expensive than other aftermarket I would say worth the money after installing and driving with it.

    Love this shifter

I shopped around before deciding on this shifter, my friend owns the shop that put it in so I helped some, only fitting problem I ran into was for the shifter boot. shifter itself went in easy. just recently drove his mustang with a different short thow shifter and there is no centering spring/assist which makes me love my barton even more!
