Review & Installation Video

Hey everyone, I’m Justin with, and today, I’m going to break down the BBK 78 mm throttle intake for all ’96-’04 Mustang GTs. This product from BBK combines two of their most popular items: the tried and true larger diameter BBK throttle body along with a very popular two-valve mod, the larger diameter intake elbow. This has combined it in one very sleek package that is a lot cheaper than ordering both products separately. Why would you want something like this versus your standard normal diameter throttle body? Well, as soon as you place a larger diameter throttle body on your stock intake plenum that is not port matched (meaning it is not matched to 78 mm), you’re instantly losing out on all that extra flow thanks to that larger throttle body. This kit from BBK takes care of all that. This throttle intake is offered in a massive 78 mm diameter, which will allow for maximum airflow. That’s also going to help with your looks under the hood as well, thanks to that very sleek black finish. That large diameter will be perfect for your forced induction setups, including superchargers or turbochargers when you have to move the absolute most amount of air through your motor. Installing this throttle intake for the first time is a relatively painless task that should only take a couple hours. You will need to transfer over both your intake air control valve and your TPS sensor from your stock unit over to the new BBK. After that, simply reinstall in reverse order, plug everything in, and you should be good to go. So if you’re looking to increase the airflow in your 2 valve 4-6, all the while increasing your throttle response and getting some big top-end gains, you’ll definitely want to check out this throttle intake from BBK Performance.

More Power. BBK Performance has designed and patented the first Throttle Intake. A Throttle Intake incorporates a high flow intake plenum and a larger 78mm BBK throttle body all in one great performing unit. This throttle intake is a direct bolt-on and is good for an additional 12 to 15 horsepower.

Quality Construction. This BBK Mustang throttle body is CNC machined from high quality 356 aluminum to ensure OEM quality and a perfect fit. Features like OEM die stamped throttle linkages, double sealed bearings, and o ringed throttle shafts make this throttle body one of best on the market today.

Application. BBK's 78mm throttle intake is designed to be a perfect fit on all 1996 to 2004 4.6L SOHC GT Mustang. This BBK brand throttle body reuses the stock throttle body gasket.

Please Note. A 78mm throttle body works great on a heavily modified or supercharged GT mustang, because stock or mildly modified GT's do not flow air enough to benefit from the larger Throttle Body.

Technical Note. This BBK product is not legal for use in emission restrictive states.

would it be good to use on my almost stock 1999 gt ? All i have done to my car is a K&N intake, flowmaster 40'S mufflers and a BBK catted x pype. im planing on buying a bama tuner so wopuld that help too ?

  • This would be too much air flow for your Mustang's engine. A better choice for power would be a 70mm Accufab or BBK unit. You would see the most gains from these throttle bodies with your combination. I would, also, suggest getting the matching upper plenum. Hope this answers your question and thanks for choosing American Muscle!

78mm for N/A or smaller?? For a naturally aspirated engine would you get more horsepower out of a larger intake such as this 78mm Throttle intake made by BBK, or would you get more horsepower out of a higher velocity intake with a smaller diameter such as the Accufab 70mm throttle body and plenum?

  • This not so much an answer but a question are you going to remain stock? Upgrading to a larger throttle body is usually one of the first steps besides the exhaust in modding engines so if you are going to remain stock then the 70 mm would get you better gains but if you are going to put cams or power adders then the 78 is a must.

Is this to big for an 01 GT??

Im having an issue with my BBK Throttle body. Its a 78mm and the throttle is sticking right off idle. When the car is off and not pulling any vacuum it works perfect. But when the car is running, it sticks right off idle and makes the car very unenjoyable to drive how do I fix this?

Do I use the same two screws on the cruise control mount on top

  • The cruise control component will simply pop on and off of this throttle body.

Looking at doing stage 2 cams. Currently have bbk cai, bbk o/r x pipe, SLP loudmouth II mufflers. Would this pair good with stage 2 cams and valve springs on top of the other modifications previously stated?

  • If this vehicle is not supercharged or turbocharged, I would recommend purchasing the BBK 73mm throttle intake item #394116 instead of this as the 78mm intake is best on forced induction which would need all the air it can get. Since this is a naturally aspirated car, the 73mm intake will work great with the stage 2 cams and BBK cold air intake.

    Sticks at idle

I've adjusted this throttle body so many times and it still sticks at idle! I even have my car idle at 950 RPMs and it still sticks at idle due to vacuum lock with NO help from American muscle

    ABOVE 3K

This throttle body is amazing, and the customer support from American muscle is as well. When I had a problem with parts in the kit they were able to refer me to BBK to resolve the issue. As for the throttle body itself it is better than I imagined, I thought people were exegerating saying it kicks in above 3K like a turbo; but it truly does and that combine with the whistle between shifting gears is absolutely addicting!

    Super Sucker

I bought this Throttle intake without reading any questions from others on this site. Such as is it too much or overkill for my NA stang? I'm hear to tell you NO it is NOT. It is awesome!! Bought this and a SR CAI and can definitely feel the throttle response. From 2,000 rpm and up (wide open) she goes. I have a 02 GT Vert Auto, I click down to 1st (traction off) stomp it click up to 2nd (chirp) and 2nd pulls harder for sure, I just mean when it's wide open and higher rpm you feel this thing working. It's got a cool whistle sound here and there on the throttle, an a slurp when you tap the gas at idle. I plan on doing Forced induction if and when my wallet allows so I feel like this was a good buy for now even though I don't have a lot of mods yet. If your going to spend $ on a Throttle intake this is the one to get. Oh BTW the stock EGR valve bolts are too long, I went to auto zone and bought 1 inch bolts. Other than that great product very happy with it. Thanks AM!

    Defective Product

I purchased this BBK 78mm Throttle Intake and was surprised to see how big it was; I couldn't wait to install it. I had to buy a new cold air intake when i realized the factory intake pipe wouldn't fit around the end of the throttle body... not too big of a deal. I spent a few hours installing the SR Performance CAI because its kind of cheap and doesn't fit great, so it took about 3-4 hours of trying different things. Then, I finally got to the point where it was time to install this BBK throttle intake. It took an hour to get the factory TB off the car, about 2 hours to put the old sensors on the new TB because of a fitment problem with the PCV fitting (defect #1, found a way around it though), and then finally i could put it on my car. when i got to the final step, which was bolting up the EGR valve, I discover bad machine work in the right-side screw hole, and could not bolt up the EGR valve. I took it off, and tried just putting the screw in the hole on its own, but it wouldn't work because of bad machining (defect #2, non-repairable). Had to spend another hour putting the old TB back on. Going to make a claim to BBK and try to get a new one. Super p*ssed off about this.

Great piece to add to a GT

Besides the part that it is a tad steep on pricing, I still think it is worth every penny. Hooked the 78mm throttle body/plenum up to my bbk throttle body and I can tell a huge difference. The item description says that it works best wit FI systems but my NA system is working great with the 78mm.

The throttle body has a nice crinkle coat finish. The performance gains are really 12 to 15 hp I have dyno sheets to prove it this along with underdrive pulleys exhaust and gears will make a whole new performance level stang that is the basic mods you can do to get good power. Overall the throttle body is totally worth it I have SLP LM1 mufflers and an off road H Pipe it really woke up my exhaust big time and throttle response is amazing. Defiantly recommend this product!!!! Thanks AM

I added this to my mustang with a cold air intake and my top end became bottomless. Anything over 2500 rpms was pure power.

    Amazing throttle response

I have a N/A 2004 mustang gt with a few mods and adding this 78mm bbk tb definitely made amazing results. Im sure this would be a lot more helpful to a supercharged engine. But even without it you can feel the results. I dont have a tune on it yet, but i will soon. Even without the tune, everything runs fine. The idle is around 750 warm and a little under 1000 when cold start. It took me about an hour to install because i had a friend who did the same thing to his 01 gt.

    Love it!

It was easy to install altough i did have to buy a new tps sensor. You can realy feel the air suck in after 2500-3000 rpms. Also it goes real good with da bbk cai. Personaly i believe this is the best t/body to go with and theres no need to buy the upper plenum n t/body when you can have 1 complete piece.

Highly Recommended, slightly modified 98 GT daily driver; 3000 rpm and above power gains . The BBK will whistle at high RPM. Hint: take the rubber boot the cold air intake while the motor is warm and install it on the new BBK before the rubber cools.

once i installed and turned on the throttle body my car sounded like a beast. BUT, instructions say to let the computer calibrate to the T/B and once that happened i got a rough idle, left and right bank o2 sensor code, and a cylinder misfire code. i recommend going with sct tuner. once i installed the tune everything went away and the car has been running like a champ ever since.
