Review & Installation Video

Hey everyone, I’m Justin with, and today, I’m going to break down the BBK 78 mm throttle intake for all ’96-’04 Mustang GTs. This product from BBK combines two of their most popular items: the tried and true larger diameter BBK throttle body along with a very popular two-valve mod, the larger diameter intake elbow. This has combined it in one very sleek package that is a lot cheaper than ordering both products separately. Why would you want something like this versus your standard normal diameter throttle body? Well, as soon as you place a larger diameter throttle body on your stock intake plenum that is not port matched (meaning it is not matched to 78 mm), you’re instantly losing out on all that extra flow thanks to that larger throttle body. This kit from BBK takes care of all that. This throttle intake is offered in a massive 78 mm diameter, which will allow for maximum airflow. That’s also going to help with your looks under the hood as well, thanks to that very sleek black finish. That large diameter will be perfect for your forced induction setups, including superchargers or turbochargers when you have to move the absolute most amount of air through your motor. Installing this throttle intake for the first time is a relatively painless task that should only take a couple hours. You will need to transfer over both your intake air control valve and your TPS sensor from your stock unit over to the new BBK. After that, simply reinstall in reverse order, plug everything in, and you should be good to go. So if you’re looking to increase the airflow in your 2 valve 4-6, all the while increasing your throttle response and getting some big top-end gains, you’ll definitely want to check out this throttle intake from BBK Performance.

More Power. BBK Performance has designed and patented the first Throttle Intake. A Throttle Intake incorporates a high flow intake plenum and a larger 78mm BBK throttle body all in one great performing unit. This throttle intake is a direct bolt-on and is good for an additional 12 to 15 horsepower.

Quality Construction. This BBK Mustang throttle body is CNC machined from high quality 356 aluminum to ensure OEM quality and a perfect fit. Features like OEM die stamped throttle linkages, double sealed bearings, and o ringed throttle shafts make this throttle body one of best on the market today.

Application. BBK's 78mm throttle intake is designed to be a perfect fit on all 1996 to 2004 4.6L SOHC GT Mustang. This BBK brand throttle body reuses the stock throttle body gasket.

Please Note. A 78mm throttle body works great on a heavily modified or supercharged GT mustang, because stock or mildly modified GT's do not flow air enough to benefit from the larger Throttle Body.

Technical Note. This BBK product is not legal for use in emission restrictive states.

I have a 98 GT that has a cold air intake, PI head swap, long tube headers, off/road x-pipe, flowmasters, and a tune. Would my engine benefit from this throttle body? Or would this be too much air for the engine? Thanks!

  • This would work perfectly fine with your car! Since you have a tuner I would recommend getting a new tune with the throttle body!

I have a stock throttle body, I have an intake and a throttle body spacer. My buddy who owns an 03 Mustang GT Procharged , explained that this intake would be too big for my 02 4.6L V8. He also said it would run lean. Is this true? Would this throttle body be too big? If I decide to buy this throttle body, what else would I need to buy to accommodate fitment? Thank You!

  • The BBK 78mm throttle intake is indeed to big. While this intake does provide more volume, the velocity will significantly decrease on slightly modified motor, and power will actually be lost. This throttle intake is recommend for either a supercharged or turbocharged application where air velocity would be increased. It is a possibility that it could run a little lean and produce a CEL, but a tune could correct the inadequate fueling issue. As far as fitment, it is a direct replacement fit; the only thing that may be needed, would be a coupler that connects the intake tube and the throttle intake, if the original is too small.

I've decided to do up my 1999 GT I bought brand new 17 years ago. It is a summer sunshine drive only. Base lined my track times 3-4 times at different tracks almost 10 years ago. It has 35,000 miles on it. I am starting with a Bama tuner. To monitor gains with out going to the track every time as well as to maximize my bolt on gains. I pick the tuner up tomorrow. Next going on will be a BBK CAI. It is in the mail now. I would like to do this BBK 78mm Throttle intake next. Thinking by June 1, 2016. That would be my intake set-up. June's bolt owns will be the BBH Ceramic long tubes followed by BBK Off-Road X-pipe (no Cats) finished with the stainless Magnaflow completion exhaust. (The glass pack style). August will be gears a a rear diff freshening up. (3.73 or 4.10...would like your opinion). Eventually I would like to do a Kenne Bell Twin Screw supercharger. Maybe next year. Maybe a few years out. My question is if I'm a few years how is this set-up going to be for me overall? And when I choose gears should I go 4.10 if I ventral lay supercharge or will the 3.73 be the better gear long term. I am not a regular drag strip guy and do regular 3-6 hour holiday drives one way. Before supercharging what would this set up put out for me as RWHP. LOVING THE SIGHT AND ALL THE EXCELLENT INFO..

I have a a almost stock car I have a BBK cold air intake and slp loudmouth pipes would I gain hp if I was to get this 79 mm throttle intake??

  • The BBK 78mm Throttle Intake is designed for Mustangs which can supply sufficient volume with out sacrificing velocity. Installing the throttle intake will increase the volume, however, velocity will be decreased due to the change in volume, so it could perhaps cause a loss of power on a motor with minor modification.

Good for PI swapped 96 I have a 96 GT. I've swapped to PI heads and intake. I have a BBK off road X pipe and flowmaster exhaust, SR performance CAI, ford racing 4.10 gears...I don't plan on adding a supercharger or turbo but i'm considering adding some cams. Is this throttle intake something that will rob me of power until i do that or is this something that will help now and help a lot more once i swap the cams and springs?

  • I suggest waiting till you install new cams before you install the BBK 78mm Throttle Intake. Even though you do have a handful of modifications done to the car, this larger Throttle Body may still rob you of power. Larger cams and an upgraded valve train will definitely allow this Throttle Body to improve the performance of the vehicle.

installing bbk throttle system I am running a cdc shaker system will this intake have enough clearance under the hood using the shaker or is the intake taller than stock .thanks

  • The BBK 78mm Throttle Intake (96-04 GT) will have enough clearance to fit under the CDC Shaker system as this is a very similar size to the stock intake.

once i installed and turned on the throttle body my car sounded like a beast. BUT, instructions say to let the computer calibrate to the T/B and once that happened i got a rough idle, left and right bank o2 sensor code, and a cylinder misfire code. i recommend going with sct tuner. once i installed the tune everything went away and the car has been running like a champ ever since.

worth it, but some screws need to have washers. be careful of using stock screws you might go through the throttle body.

    Exellent product

Really noticable horsepower gain, better throttle response and it looks great sitting on top of my 4.6.Although I do suggest buying a new tps sensor cost is about 20 bucks. ford used locktight on the screws that hold the tps to the throttlebody, and that can make removing the tps very difficult.

    Interesting Gains

Before you purchase this product you have to note that on a naturally aspirated 2V motor the gains are on the top end... when you hit about 3000 RPM you feel the increase in power, the best logical explanation is this... You are increasing the diameter of the throttle body you so you are decreasing the velocity (speed) of air entering the motor. Off the line it is a little bit sluggish BUT the gains are so noticeable that you feel it pull just like a turbo. The throttlebody also whistles when you shift gears, it sounds awesome. RECOMMEND this product all day, just make sure you don't buy the biggest intake pipe out there so you regain some of that velocity. :) YOU WILL FEEL THE GAINS at 3000rpm, for you speed demons you will be utterly impressed. I give it 5 stars all day. You just have to take into consideration that this is a low velocity TB so you will experience some turbo lag type symptoms. I love mine and the pictures don't do justice for the appearance :) BUY, ENJOY, BE IMPRESSED!

    Great Procuct!!!

Just had this put on today and all i can say is wow! I also have the BBK cold air intake and it really improved my throttle response. It does have a small whistle but that is normal because of more airflow. Even if you have a stock gt, save your money and get this instead of getting a seperate plenum and throttle body. Don't worry about 70mm or 75mm. This is all you need.

    BBK 78 mm Throttle Body.

Very pleased with this BBK throttle body. Install time was 2 hours, and the black and silver finish looks so much better over my old stock running pony TB. I notice the power difference when I take off from a greenlight or just an occasional drag to test her. This TB really opens up and you can feel the difference in the way the car sounds and extra emmphh... when she roars. Along with the BBK tuned shorty headers and Pypes midpipe, with violators, My stang now wakes the dead and sounds equally mean as she looks. Thanks BBK and American Muscle. JohnW

    BBK 78 MM

I have a supercharged mustang gt and this has made a huge difference. I was blown away at the difference in response time and the power it unleashed. The only thing i didnt like about it is that it is so big I had trouble finding a hose connector to fit it so I heated the hose i had and got it around it. I would recommend to anyone with a supercharger. dont know about and N/A motor though

    beware 96-98 mustangs

Too much volume of air for the 96-98 mustangs. Through my experience the velocity is more important than volume. Causes bogging and low end loss of power and torque. Save your money and get other bolt ons like pi heads etc.

    Love it!

It was easy to install altough i did have to buy a new tps sensor. You can realy feel the air suck in after 2500-3000 rpms. Also it goes real good with da bbk cai. Personaly i believe this is the best t/body to go with and theres no need to buy the upper plenum n t/body when you can have 1 complete piece.

Yes it works as good as it looks and yes you can afford the TB SPACER with the money saved versus going with other brands. Pros:The product speaks for itself your getting a lot of air volume--- With a BBK CAI and a CUSTOM BAMA TUNE your mustang will be at hauling especially 3k+rpms Cons:I want a turbocharger ;D This is my first review, Thank You AM
