Review & Installation Video

Review & Install Video

Hey, guys, Stephanie with americanmuscle.com here with a review and install of the Borla ATAK Axle-Back Exhaust for the 2005 to 2009 GT Mustang. We're gonna be talking about a few different things with this exhaust today, but mainly we'll talk about the sound of the axle-back and the install. The install for this is easy. It's a one out of three wrenches on the difficulty meter. There's no doubt in my mind that the Borla ATAK is gonna be for the GT owner out there that's looking for a high-quality system that's gonna deliver a ton of sound. The ATAK is by far the loudest and most aggressive muffler in the Borla lineup, which also includes the Touring and the S-Type. Borla says that ATAK stands for Acoustically-Tuned Applied Kinetics, which is basically Borla's fancy way of saying that this muffler will be loud, but it's not gonna get distorted or sloppy. So the main component in the system is really gonna be the ATAK mufflers, and that's the component that is really gonna set this system apart from all of the other options out there. Borla designed this muffler to be very similar to a race muffler and its less sound absorbing materials than Borla's other options. The course of the mufflers are custom-tuned for the GT Mustang, and they give it a very specific and aggressive sound. Borla says that it actually produces the highest available decibel level that's street legal. There isn't any drone with the system, which is actually a pretty awesome feature to have being that the system is as loud as it is. There also isn't any of that high-end distortion that you normally hear with a loud system. The system does have some raspiness to it, and a crackle or gurgle on decel occasionally. If you compare the ATAK system to the Touring and even the S-Type, in my opinion, it's more of a higher pitched tone. I'd say that the Borla S-Type muffler produces a slightly deeper tone. Now, with all that being said, I am gonna give this a four out of five on the loudness scale, one being a very quiet system, and a five being a very loud system. Keep in mind that if you ever change your headers or your mid-pipe down the road, this could open up even more noise for you. So if your biggest deciding factor when you're shopping for an axle-back is loud, I'd say that the ATAK from Borla is probably gonna be one of the top choices here at AM. If you aren't looking for that loud, then Borla does have those other options that I mentioned already. When it comes to materials, you're looking at 2-3/4-inch manual-bent stainless steel tubing. The ATAK mufflers are Borla's race-type mufflers, which are straight-through mufflers, and this system has 4-inch prune stainless steel tips with the Borla logo embossed on them. As far as price, you can expect to pay between $500 and $600 for this axle-back. Like I mentioned earlier, this is one of the top of the line options as far as tune, sound, materials, and fitment, so it is gonna be on the more expensive side. Luckily, if this one's out of your budget, then there are a ton of other axle-backs for the Mustang that you can check out. This is a direct bolt-on item, so you're looking at a very easy install. I'm gonna call this a one out of three wrenches on the scale when you look at difficulty. Overall, you're looking at about one hour to get this all done. A lift would certainly make things easier for you here, but the job can be done on jack stands as well if you don't have access to one. This axle-back very simply folds right up into the stock location, so you won't have to cut or modify anything. Just looking at dropping your old axle-back and the new axle-back will come with new clamps for you, so you don't have to worry about that. When you're going to install your new setup, it will probably be easiest to leave everything loose until you have it all lined up, and then tighten it down. Wrapping things up here with the Borla ATAK Axle-Back, this is a loud system, the loudest from Borla, and it doesn't hav

Loud Aggressive Sound. Add a touch of Borla excellence to your 4.6L GT Mustang with an "ATAK" Axle-Back Exhaust System for an extremely aggressive muscle car sound that is not for the faint of heart.

ATAK. Acoustically-Tuned Applied Kinetics, is Borla's newest technology that produces the highest available dB (decibel) levels to pump the volume while retaining clarity of sound, avoiding distortion typically found in louder exhausts.

High Quality Construction. Constructed from ultra smooth mandrel bent 2.75" stainless steel tubing to improve exhaust flow, the Borla Axle-Back exhaust system features two race inspired "ATAK" mufflers with 4 inch polished stainless steel slant tips for aggressive sound and impressive looks.

Application. This Borla Stainless Steel Exhaust System is specifically designed to be a direct bolt on upgrade reusing factory hardware for the 2005-2009 4.6L GT Mustangs.

Hello I have an mbrp cat back racing exhaust and I want it to be way louder. Will this fit if I have a catback? Or do I have to get rid of the cats?

Hudd

  • For this Borla axle back system, yes you would be able to keep your catalytic converters. The cats would not hinder the use of the mufflers.

Im leaning towards these borla ataks and I'm looking for a loud exhaust the thing is when I see videos some people say these borlas are really quiet after they warm up will they get louder if I pair these with bbk catted x pipe? The reason I'm getting a bbk catted x pipe is California enforces using cats for smog checks.

JonathanC

  • This Borla ATAK exhaust system is one of the loudest that we offer on our site. As far as pairing it with a BBK catted x-pipe you will get a nice raspy and aggressive growl, not one that will be quiet when they warm up.

How much deeper is this compared to Flowmaster American Thunders? I am looking for a better sounding exhaust but don't want to spend too much money without improving the sound much.

Greg

  • The Borla ATAK Axle-Back Exhaust is going to offer a very loud and aggressive sound. It is going to give the car a nice growl. The Flowmaster American Thunder Axle-Back Exhaust (05-10 GT, GT500), item # 18403, (http://www.americanmuscle.com/flowmaster-axleback-0510gt.html) is going to have a throaty aggressive sound. The Borla's will be louder than the Flowmaster's. Though, it also depends on what other parts you have on the car (i.e. X-Pipe, H-Pipe, headers). If you are going for the loudest and most aggressive exhaust tone you can get, I suggest going with the ATAKs. If you would like something throaty but not extremely loud, I suggest going with the Flowmasters. I recommend you go on the items page or YouTube so that you can listen to what each Exhaust sounds like. This will give you a better idea of what you like best.

    Sounds amazing

The sound is so crisp. It's great quality loud but a crisp sounding roar. Yesterday I pulled up next to some guy in a brand new BMW 335i and after his girlfriend heard my car she couldn't take her eyes of my car. Just saying. Get this exhaust. Well worth the extra couple bucks. #golddigger

    sound and instalation

I love this exhaust!! You get on it and it gives a deep throaty sound and going down the highway you know it's there but not in a bad way. They go right into the hangers, move them around some to center them and you're done. This is a great product. It does take a little longer then an hour to install including the removal of the old mufflers. I took the hangers off the car, for easier removal of the mufflers, then put them on the Borla's and bolted them up.

    WOW

I bought my 08 gt with magnaflow mufflers already installed. Put the ATAK's on and wow what a difference. The volume isn't obnoxious but its very loud. It has the most held together exhaust note I have heard in a long time, just a nice deep burly sound, even with 4.10 gears at highway speed it is quiet until you rip into to it, then is just comes alive and everyone is looking , i highly recommend these mufflers, dont think about it just click order now

    Can't go wrong with Borla!

Where to start? Everything about the Borla ATAKs is awesome. The build quality is superb and installation was easy. I've combined these with a Magnaflow catted x-pipe and holy cow do they sound good. One thing to note is that these are LOUD. If you want a loud exhaust the ATAKs are probably your best option next to straight pipe; during the install I started it up after I had the stock mufflers off and it sounded almost just as loud as when the Borlas were on. I can't praise the ATAKs enough, they are simply incredible!

    BEST SOUND EVER!!

This exhaust sounds so good I fell in love with it when I first started it. I currently have bbk long tubes with catted shorty x pipe and it sounds very aggresive with a nice rumble. It has no rasp whatsoever and very little to no drone which is my favorite thing about them. Easy install only took about an hour it would have been less but the stock bolts holding my old flowmaster exhaust was so tight. Overall its a 5 out of 5 stars. And if you have the money. These borlas are definitely worth it. I am currently looking for an offroad h pipe which will only make it sound better so im excited for that.

    Expensive, but worth it.

Boria nailed it with the ATAK. The "not for the faint of heart" in the description had me a little worried they might be too loud. NOT. The sound clips on the net are not even close to the clean deep sound of the ATAK axle backs. They sound so good that I haven't listened to the radio since the ATAK's went on.Yes, they sound that good. They can be quiet as a stock system when you want, but drop the hammer and be prepared to smile. And no drone at any speed. Boeia's instructions leave a lot to be desired They say no more than 32 to 35 fp with a torque wrench on the clamps, at that setting I could pull the ATAK's off by hand. Had to grind the stud off the stock exhaust pipe. After doing that it was a piece of cake. This is a great example of you get what you pay for. Expensive yes, would I do it over again YES! They sound that good!!

    Great Borla

I have had Borla stingers for awhile and i was recently rear ended and had to get new mufflers. I was going to get another pair of the S type ones but then i saw that they had these out for the 05 to 09 and i knew i had to get them. There great no drone what so ever when im crusing. I had a lot with the stingers. The sound and tone is so much better also. Well worth the extra 100$

    Another Great Product From Borla!

Before I ordered this Borla ATAK exhaust system, I looked around the web for a sound clip of these pipes in action. I was worried they would be far too loud. Coming from an area where every mustang seems to sound like a diesel truck driving by, I was cautious about which system to pick. Despite not finding a sound clip of this exhaust, I went ahead and ordered this system anyway. The new exhaust bolts up fairly quickly and looks fantastic installed. The huge rolled tips look great from behind the car. And then once you fire the car up for the first time it truly roars to life. The mustang turns into a whole new beast. Rolling on the throttle is greeted by a roar from the exhaust. And then when you simply want to cruise the exhaust seems to almost "mute" itself, with just a hint of rumble at cruising speeds. Absolutely no drone in any gear. And with a quick down shift, the exhaust wakes back up and your roaring down the street again. Overall, I am very impressed by the quality product that Borla has produced. With Borla's attention to detail and the amount of time and effort they put into each product they produce, you cannot go wrong with picking up any of the Borla systems. Plus they have their million mile warranties, which gives you piece of mind down the road that if an issue were to arise (which I do not foresee happening), Borla would back their own product and take care of the situation. Don't debate on whether or not to get the exhaust, like I did. Just click the buy button and prepare to hear that Stang come to life. You won't regret it.

    From stock, to Borla!!

I picked this set up, as I saw they were available for the 05-09 year Mustangs. When I got the car, I knew I wanted something different than the ordinary, and boy did I make a good decision cause this exhaust has THE perfect tone! I had my mechanic install these, for a great price, and upon firing it up for the first time with the Borla's on, I was in awe, at the perfect tone it screamed!! The note is very reminisent of the early mustangs, and is loud when first started, and has a nice calm idle....until you get on it, and really unleash the beast, boy does it scream! At the end of the day, I could'nt be happier with my purchase of the Borla Atak axelbacks, and highly recommend these to anyone, looking into an exhaust for their Mustang, over all other brands!! Again and as always thank you AM, for delivering quality parts and upgrades!!

    Only for those with cats

The fit and finish are outstanding, but if you have an O/R X or H-pipe installed these axle backs are just WAAAAY to loud. You are essentially announcing your presence to every cop within a 3 mile radius. That was too much attention for me and really sucked the fun out of driving. Moreover, your neighbors will hate you especially if you leave for work early in the morning. Keep in mind that once you install these as I did, the product CAN NOT BE RETURNED. I had to sell mine on Craigs List at a substantially reduced price. The take home message is, these Borlas are insanely loud in conjunction with an O/R X or H-pipe.

    Best purchase

I could not be happier with the Borla ATAK axle back system. When I bought my 06 mustang it had magnaflows and I knew I wanted something different. I went with just the axle back because I already had headers and after market exhaust. These sound SO much better! I highly recommend them. Everybody tells me that it sounds perfect and what I did to it. amazing sound and no drone at cruising speeds. I can't wipe the smile off of my face. You will not be disappointed.

This is why I bought a Mustang GT, so it could sound like it does with the Borla ATAK mufflers!! It is an aggressive sound, but it is a deep, rich sound when the car is idling or cruising. But it has a attention grabbing sound when you accelerate!!
