When Should I Replace My Mustang’s Spark Plugs?

Like tires and filters, spark plugs degrade over time and should be replaced. It’s recommended to replace your old spark plugs every 30,000 to 60,000 miles. You can check your owner’s manual to review the recommended mileage for replacement. Spark plugs are often a forgotten about upgrade, but they can play a very important role in helping you to gain back any lost power and at a very reasonable price. If you want to provide your Mustang with a cleaner and more efficient spark, you should definitely invest in some new plugs.

What Kinds of Spark Plugs Are There?

There are (3) three main types of spark plugs: replacement, upgraded and colder plugs. The plans you have for your Mustang will help you in deciding which type best suites your needs.

Mustang Replacement Plugs

OEM level plugs will help you regain the lost power that has slowly disappeared from your engine. They’re great for stock engines and lightly modified engines. Ford Motorcraft makes a great replacement OEM spark plug that will help to restore the lost horses.

Upgraded Spark Plugs for Mustangs

Upgraded plugs will often have more advanced components and include features that help to create a more efficient spark. Some of those features include a stronger Iridium or Platinum tip, anti-corrosion properties and better conductivity then the replacement level plugs. These are great for stock or modified engines and really work best for most applications. Upgraded offerings from NGK and Ford Racing help to give your Mustang that extra spark it was missing. NGK’s Iridium IX Series and G-Power Platinum are both great options for an upgraded plug.

Colder Heat Range Plugs

A colder plug is referring to the heat range of the plug and they help to eliminate detonation in boosted applications. These plugs should are meant to be used specifically for Supercharged, Turbocharged and Nitrous Applications. Stock Mustangs won’t benefit from using this style plug. Zex and Ford Racing both offer plugs that are excellent for boosted applications.

Complementary Modifications When Replacing Your Mustang’s Spark Plugs

Mustang Coil Plugs

2010-2014 Mustangs: When you’re on the hunt for that like-new spark your Mustang had right after rolling off the assembly line, doing a complete maintenance overhaul will provide the greatest gain that you are sure to feel. In other words, when you grab a new set of spark plugs, grab a new set of spark plug wires and a coil pack if you have a 4.0 Mustang. If you have the 3.7L, 4.6L or 5.0L, upgrading your coil-on plugs is the way to go. The coil packs help create more energy to your plugs. More energy equals a hotter spark that will burn fuel more completely, releasing all its potential energy. This translates into better fuel economy and more power that you can feel.

1999-2009: When you’re on the hunt for that like-new spark your Mustang had right after rolling off the assembly line, doing a complete maintenance overhaul will provide the greatest gain that you are sure to feel. In other words, when you grab a new set of spark plugs, you should also plan on picking up some new coil-on plugs if you have a GT, Bullitt or GT500. If you have a V6 Mustang, a coil pack and some wires will help you complement the spark. Coil Packs and Coil-on Plugs help produce more power for your motor.

Mustang Coil Pack

1979-1998 Mustang Coil Packs & Distributors: With 1979-1998 Mustangs, another complementary upgrade is the coil pack. Coil Packs make more power than the wimpy stock coils to improve throttle response and produce more HP and TQ. If you have a 1979-1995 Mustang 5.0, you can take it one step further and upgrade to a stronger CNC machined billet distributor. The ignition system is full of components that help give you the spark you need to keep your pony’s power!
