Review & Install Video

Hi I’m Justin with AmericanMuscle.com, and I’m taking a closer look at SHR’s push button start ignition kit, fitting all 2010 and newer Mustangs. Push button start kits are one of those interior mods that always seem to get a good reaction from your passengers, it’s a bit of that race car, supercar flavor, that seems to work very well on the interiors of these newer Mustangs. This kit from SilverHorse Racing features an illuminating blue button along with a gloss black anodized aluminum bezel. The kit also includes a pre-wired harness along with all the accessories needed for installation. You do have a couple of options using this kit, for starters you can choose to start the car just using the button alone, or you can allow for both the key or the button to start the car. Secondly, you can choose to have the light either remain illuminated whenever the key is in the ignition, or you can choose to have the button shut off whenever the car is on, and the parking brake has been released. This kit from SilverHorse Racing installs directly into the power outlet located on the upper portion of the dash, so there’s no need for any cutting or drilling, however you will need to disassemble a fair amount of the dash just to gain access to the panel and all the necessary wiring, so we’ll call it 2 hours from start to finish, just to be safe. So if you’re looking to add a touch of supercar styling and functionality to the interior and your 2010 or newer Mustang, then be sure to check out this push button start kit from SHR.

Push to Start. Give your Mustang a Push Button Start Ignition like those seen in Exotic Super Cars with a Silver Horse Racing Blue Illuminated Push Button Start Ignition Kit. A Push Start Ignition is possibly the coolest functional modification you can make to your pony's interior.

Operation Options. The Silverhorse Racing Engine Start Button can be installed to allow your Mustang to start from the button alone, or from either the key or button. Wiring options allow for constant illumination whenever the key is in the ignition, or to function in conjunction with the emergency brake, turning the light off once the car is started and the parking brake has been released.

Billet Aluminum Bezel. Completed in a gloss black anodized finish, the Silverhorse Racing Push Button Start bezel is precision CNC machined from 6061-T6 billet aluminum for light weight, superior strength and a perfect fit.

Straight Forward Install. The SHR Push Button Ignition kit easily installs in the existing power outlet located in the center of your dash with the included wire harness, so there is no drilling into your dash.

Assembled In The USA. This SilverHorse Racing product is proudly assembled right here in the USA from the highest quality domestic and imported components available.

Application. The Silverhorse Racing Blue Illuminated Engine Start Button is designed to fit all 2010 to 2014 Ford Mustangs, including the V6, GT and Shelby models.

Starting without key? The video and description both start that this product can 'start the car with the button alone, or with the key and button'. From the videos and comments I've seen, it seems as though the key must be in the 'accessories on' position to be able to use the button. What was meant by 'starting with button alone?" If you could start the car with JUST the button, I'd buy this in a heartbeat.

  • The key needs to be in the ignition and then the button needs to be depressed. To me, that defeats the purpose of have a start button. If the key is already in the ignition, why not just finish turning it to start the car?

Will this override the key start, 2012 mustang v6? I and a lot of other Mustang owners have a problem with trying to start our car and the starter remains silent. All gauges work, the tachometer and MPH sweep as they should and the blinking car with the lock through it turns off, but a lot of the time when you turn the key to start, it does nothing. No one seems to know why?? If you guys are aware of this problem, will the blue push button bypass the key start and reliably start the car? Forget the service dept at Ford dealerships! All they do is insult your intelligence. This is why we come to you and get answers!

  • Unfortunately this is an internal electrical problem that would need to be fixed before installing this push button start. I would recommend having this electrical issue fixed first before installing this kit. I would recommend talking to some other Mustang enthusiast on the forums about what different shops across the country have done to address this issue.

Question Resolved

Ambient lighting connect? On the newer Mustangs with ambient lighting. Is there any way to splice this in to get the color change? Or are we stuck with just blue?

Cheese89

  • Knowing that these buttons come in three basic colors, I don't think the buttons are capable of changing with the ambient lighting system. The different colors are achieved by heavily tinting the button plastic, so unless they can come out with a clear button, I don't think the changing colors can be realized. Maybe down the road that will happen ...... Good Luck

I am just curious as to how much of the dash will have to be disassembled due to the majority of it being plastic because plastic rattles when messed with. Also, how will it work with remote start? Will it hinder it from working as it should? And with the key in and turned to the on position then is when you hit the button to start the car correct?

Does my Key need to be in the ignition, if not how does the button turn the car on, does it have a Bluetooth? if no Bluetooth how to I stop from somebody from turning my car and driving away?

BlueAngel

  • You will still need your key to the on position for this push button start to work. With out the key to the on position the car will not start.

Question Resolved

Button location options? Can this be installed in the center consel?

1Timothy1

  • it says the button replaces the outlet in the center of your dash but that is so you do not have to do and drilling or cutting and it also sets the button in a location your passengers can see it and admire it, not sure how well it would work for car thieves if you have it set up so you dont need the key in the ignition. most people would follow the directions and put it on the dash mainly because they do not have to drill or cut their dash.

SRH 'Push' to Start Illuminated Button ......

I had this item installed at the Dealership and I was pleasantly surprised at how well it looked. No issues with the functionality either, and you can opt to have installation requiring the actual key to use the Push Button, or it can be used without . The one thing you may want to consider is whether to have the button on full-time illumination, because the button glow is very bright ..... A great accessory for any Mustang, I recommend this item, and it's worth every penny ............... Thanks American Muscle, and Silver Race Horse Products!

Worth it! But recommend shop install.

I Love this push button start! The blue LED is bright but not blinding especially at night. There are full instructions that come with it HOWEVER, it is not a simple plug and play install. The instructions require you to take apart the instrument cluster, entire front dash, driver side rocker panel, take out the glove compartment, and the passenger air bag just to get to where you need to install it and connect the wires. Luckily once you get to that point, you have the option to have the LED stay permanently on, only on when the key is in and E-brake is pulled, or all off. (I chose for E-brake and key in and it looks great). I normally do all my auto work but when it came to messing with the airbag system I did not want to risk it so I took it to a VERY reputable shop close by and they did a wonderful job. I would suggest that unless your used to stripping down your entire interior, you take it to a shop but it is well worth it!

    Great interior install

at first i was skeptical of the practicality of this button, but since it was so cheap, i decided to get it anyways. had the shop install them. LED always on, it's bright, but not too overpowering. i was amazed, it's a nice mod for your car, would prefer if you didn't have to turn the key to acc. but hey, it's nice.

Dont need to be a master mechanic

Im a plumber by trade but not a mechanic. With the excellent instructions included and an excellent product, I installed this in about an hour and a half. All you need is a few hand tools, a little patience(i.e. dont yank the panels, be gentle), and some common sense. I did find that you DONT need to remove the airbag in pieces as the instructions state. Instead you can just loosen the 8mm bolts per instuctions, then just pop out the assem. WITH trim still attached thru the dash. I think that saved 30 mins and a little headache. GREAT DEAL, i love it

    Installation Alternative

I opted to install the SHR Push Button Start at the same time I was installing my Raxiom Navigation. While the SYNC LED Display was removed, I was able to pop the 12v accessory outlet forward and through the register. Although this method does require a good deal of force and care, I was able to avoid removing my airbag pack. It is necessary to pop off the plastic cover in order to pull the outlet completely through. After completely removing the outlet, I disconnected and re-routed my power for use in a future project. Next, take a pair of needle nose pliers and remove the spring loaded catch mechanism. Finally, take the allen wrench and adjust the screw such that there is a small amount of friction when installing the plate. This will ensure the plate does not pop back out. While this approach may seem odd at first, I found it way less nerve wracking than having to deal with the airbags.

    The Little Things

This is most definitely not a required upgrade but the end result is awesome. I found the aux power to be fairly aggravating to use in this location so being offered a solution as cool as this one was a no brain-er to me. The install is nothing to worry about a little bit involved but just so you know the instructions provided are very simple and easy to follow. The removal of the airbag is just the same and it is explained in great detail also. The only reason it is required to remove the air bag is due to the two bolts for the aux power outlet and vents is located behind the airbag cover. I was very impressed with how easily this install went and the end results.

Easy to install, great way to upgrade the interior!

This product is simply amazing. And the fact that the illuminated button only stays on with the key/e-brake engaged is awesome. The tearing down of the interior can be frustrating so be sure to be gentle with removing parts. I have broken a couple plastic pieces but only because it was out of that day lol. And CJ pony parts has a great step by step install video. Just be sure to splice the right wires together at the end. The video does not get into great detail when it comes to the wiring. Email SHR if you are unsure about the splicing portion, they are very helpful with everything and even emailed me a photo process. You dont want to install the push button to the horn like I did LOL. overall great buy. I got the blue button because thats the only color my Boss' gauge color shows.

I like the fact you can use both the key or the button. Instal was fairly easy and straight forward. I set mine up to have the light stay off. If they ever come out with one that doesnt need a key and had a key fob to recognize the car, I would deffenatly upgrade.

    SHR illuminated push start

recently got this as a gift for my birthday. I was so excited I ran out and started to do it in the dark with a flashlight. ive worked at a ford dealership for about 4 years now so removing all the trim wasn't a problem. but the instructions tell you to removed the rocker panel and remove the airbag? over all its pretty cool. you can still use the key if you want to which is nice but its nice to show off and impress someone.

i decided to get the push start it is great not to bad for a simple mod but the intructions for the air bag removal is horrible because it is for a 2010 to 2012 mustangs not for the 13 and 14 and it could give bit more instructions for the ignition connector as well but other than that it is an easy install it can be done by anyone

Install was easy thanks to the step by step instructions and online video. Only thing is that it was short a splice so we had to cut a wire and use electrical tape. The kit only came with 2 and we needed 3.
