Review & Installation Video

Review & Install Video

Hey, I'm Justin with AmericanMuscle.com, and I'm going to be taking a closer look at BBK's long tube headers, available in either ceramic or chrome for all 2011 and newer Mustang GTs. Simply put, long tube headers are designed to completely replace your restrictive factory manifolds, which can really choke out the flow of exhaust. Long tube headers paired with an aftermarket Mid Pipe and exhaust will make for a very free-flowing setup that should give you a nice bump in both power and sound. As far as price is concerned, you'll find these long tubes from BBK to be right in the middle of the road. Now as far as construction is concerned, you'll see some slight similarities with the BBK and the Pype's long tube headers. They both share Mandrel-bent long straight runners, which is going to be great for top-end power, however the BBK features a 1-and-3/4 inch Mandrel-bent tubing, whereas the Pype's offer a 1-and-5/8ths inch Mandrel bent tubing, so you are getting larger diameter tubing with the BBK and the option to go with the ceramic coating as well. That ceramic coating is going to offer a couple of different benefits, first of which is performance. Ceramic dissipates heat a lot better than a raw stainless or chrome-plated header, so it's going to have a slight edge performance-wise, and should help keep under-the-hood temps down as well. Now the chrome option will be less expensive, and it won't dissipate heat quite as well as a ceramic coating, but one thing's for sure, that chrome finish is really going to pop under the hood. In addition to the different finish options available with the BBK headers, you'll also enjoy a perfect fit, thanks to the laser-cut flanges and quality welds that will help prevent any premature failure down the road. Installing any set of long tube headers can be a little intense, so if you don't think you have the mechanical skills to get the job done, then I would leave this one up to the professionals. However, if you are going to tackle the job, just leave yourself a full day, just to be safe. Keep in mind, whenever you run a set of long tubes like these BBKs, you will need to address your Mid Pipe. In this case, you'll need to run a flanged and shorty Mid Pipe to get everything bolted up properly. Now BBK recommends their shorty X-Pipe just for best fit and performance gains. So if you're looking for a quality set of long tubes with a number of different benefits and the option of a chrome or ceramic finish, you might want to check out these long tubes from BBK for your coyote Mustang.

More Horsepower and Torque. Improve the performance of your 5.0L Coyote Engine with a set of BBK Long Tube Headers. These BBK Ceramic Coated Headers will greatly improve your mustangs exhaust flow over the restrictive stock manifolds and increase your Pony's horsepower and torque. Significant increases in rear wheel horsepower have been seen when installed with a matching BBK Shorty X pipe or Midpipe Adapter.

Silver Ceramic Coating. These Long Tube Headers are completed in BBK's Polished Silver Ceramic Coating that not only looks great, but reduce under hood temperatures to help increase horsepower and extend the life of the headers. Ceramic Coated headers will long out last both chrome plated and polished headers.

Quality Construction. BBK Long Tube Exhaust headers are manufactured from 1-3/4" CNC mandrel bent tubing for unrestricted airflow. And feature one piece laser cut 3/8" header flanges for added strength, leak-free performance and OEM fit. These headers are then completed in a polished ceramic finish for good looks and to lower under hood temperatures.

Recommended Upgrade. To realize the full power potential that these Long Tube Headers have to offer, AmericanMuscle recommends a Bama custom tune with a Mustang Handheld Tuner to reprogram the vehicles computer (ECU) for proper operation.

Additional Required S550 Upgrades. Installation of these BBK Long Tube Headers on a 2015-2017 S550 Mustang will require the use of a set of BBK Long Tube Header Adapter Mid-Pipes part# 1816 or 18160 and an O2 Extension Harnesses and Hardware Kit part# 16332. Please see options listed above.

Application. These BBK 1-3/4" Ceramic Coated Long Tube Headers are specifically designed to fit the 2011-2017 GT Mustangs equipped with the Coyote 4 valve 5.0L V8 engine.

Application Note. BBK Long Tube Headers require the use of a BBK Shorty Midpipe, part# 1655 or 1658, for 2011-2014 GT or the BBK Long Tube Header Adapter Mid-Pipes part# 1816 or 18160, for the 2015-2017 GT for proper installation. These Headers are intended for left hand drive applications only.

Technical notes. Not legal for use on pollution controlled motor vehicles; intended for off road use only.

Will these headers work with a Borla shorty x-pipe? I have the borla s-type catback that comes with the shorty x-pipe. It appears that the collector on the headers will slip inside the open flange on the borla shorty x pipe.

Dan12gt

  • They are only meant to work with the BBK intermediate pipes, and it's a direct bolt-up using those. With that being said, there's a possibility that it will work with the shorty X-pipe from Borla, but you should be prepared, if needed, for some cutting/welding in order to get it to fit. An exhaust shop could make it work with stainless exhaust pipe, I'm sure. The easiest way to go would be to sell the Borla Shorty X-pipe on a Mustang forum or to someone in a local Mustang club, and pick up the bolt-on BBK intermediate exhaust.

BBK catted vs. BBK off road X pipe + BBK long headers? power/noise why to go off road vs. catted?

Cross00

  • I have the ceramic coated BBk longtubes and off road X and absolutely love it! They do put out quite a bit more sound but the power gains are awesome! I get nothing but compliments. I would reccomend cutting out the factory resonators if you do this. That's what I did.

Use with header wrap? Would the use of header wrap still be recommended with these headers given the ceramic coating?

KRod

  • You don't really need the header wrap with the ceramic coating, it's coated to help keep the heat down and they look good. I've had them on my 2012 5.0 for almost a year and haven't had any discoloring or heat issues.

Ground clearance? Hello, I plan on upgrading my suspension very soon and am aware that most suspension kits lower the car by about an inch, so i was wondering if anyone could give me info on how close these headers are to the ground. Do i need to worry about clearance if i also lower the car. Thanks in advance,

AFMustang

  • I have a 2014 GT and it has Eibach Sport lines with an advertised 2" drop. I have not had any issues with the headers rubbing/scraping on anything as of yet. Before my purchase of these headers, I called BBK and asked them and they stated that they had never heard of a lowered mustang with these headers rubbing/scraping under normal driving conditions. I believe them now because I have had 0 issues. The headers on my car sit about 1" or so lower than my frame.

Tuner I will be installing the BBK longtube headers along with a BBK O/R x-pipe and was curious what may happen if i do not get a tune right away for not having catalytic converters?

MickiNanovski

  • It will throw a CEL for too much airflow through the rear O2 sensor. The tune shuts off the rear O2s, but it also tune the engine better for more performance with the added mods

They absolutely work! Power and Reduction of Under Hood Heat

Ok here's the deal! I installed these BBK Ceramic headers along with the BBK Cat-less mid pipe, which by the way connects to the factory system at a 2 1/4" pipe reduction, which I had an exhaust shop change it to a 3" X pipe. First make sure you have a muffler that is not crazy loud. I had a roush axle back and with the headers it sounded like 10 Harley Davidsons revving. I quickly changed to the 5" Magnaflow Street Mufflers to quiet it down. There is a definitive gain in power from low rpm but very noticeable at the higher rpm range as the car still wants to keep pulling. The car seems snappier and more responsive at throttle. Under hood temp is noticeably lower as my garage is not as hot when I pull in and park the car. They are noisy as you will hear the exhaust pulses through the headers, like a ticking noise, at first I thought the headers were leaking exhaust but not the case. The car sounds mean and you will get everyone that will want to race you, but with my 90mm BBK throttle body, Steeda CAI, GT350 Intake Manifold, Lund Racing Tune, BBK Ceramic Headers, Cat less 3" Exhaust Set up, Good Luck! I keep my car NA and use it as a daily driver here in Florida.

BBK Longtubes are the only way to go....

Get these and save some money... Fitment was perfect, power gains were good after 3k and the sound.... Oh my.... its very loud especially with BBK off-road x-pipe and MBRP race cat-back !!! It drones pretty bad but that's due to my mufflers.... It also has not thrown engine code after 160 miles either :-) Shop charged me 900$ for my 14 and my buddy 600$ for his 15 which is because the 14 is so much more difficult to install....

    Good for the price

Went with these for cost. Very happy with the new sound. Only added 14 HP with dyno tune with high flow cats, but this is what I expected since I already had full bolts ons (CIA, X-pipe catback, and a canned tune). Other headers are giving 20 HP without cats for similar builds, so this seems right in line. Not too loud for a DD with Magnaflow Street catback, but it does get loud over 4K or so. So you can be unobtrusive or loud depending on how you choose to drive.

    Obnoxious

Took me and a friend about a day and a half on some ramps and jack stands. I recommend using a lift to make the job easier. Be prepared for a lot of cussing and bleeding as most of the bolts are impossible to get to. But after its all done, it's worth it. The performance gain and sound is amazing. I also got the BBK shorty xpipes and have Roush axle backs. Cold starts are ridiculously loud and after 3k, the car just screams. Highly recommend.

Sound is a deafening roar full throttle (I live in the country and my sister in law heard me 1 mile through the woods!) At cruise speed its not bad at all. I wish I could say getting the stock exhaust off was easy, believe it or not the new exhaust went together faster than the old ones coming off.

I started on Saturday at noon, by six I had everything off and the left side on, and then came the nightmare, the right hand side, it took some time but I handled it. It took removing the battery box, the right motor mount and steering nuckel and starter. By the way I am 60 years old and I did on jack stands. I put the X pipe at the same time. Had fun

    BBK Headers perform great

I bought the BBK long tube headers and BBK catted shorty X-pipe to make the car louder and provide it with more power and they did just that. I noticed a big increase in the way it sounds from idle-WOT and an increase in power. They will take about a day to take off the old exhaust manifolds and install the long tube headers but the are well worth it. I am very happy with this product and would recommend it.

    Mandatory Mod

The 9 hours it took me to install these headers and off road x pipe were well worth it. They sound great and the power gains were felt instantly! I highly recommend these headers to anyone looking to Mod their new 5.0. The power gains will put butterflies in your stomach during full acceleration, especially when combined with a JLT CAI, BMR lowering springs and a set of 4:10's. Now all I need to do is beef up my rear suspension so I can hook up during full acceleration. Thanks agan AM.

    Power Tower

BBK's Ceramic Long Tube headers have been the best purchase so far. I felt the power change instantly. My mustang sounds MEAN!! I will suggest getting a shop to install them. I tackled this job along with a friend of mine, neither one of us hand experience or the knowledge of installing headers. The instructions came in handy but still took me two days to get them installed. However, i will say that the blood and sweat was worth it all!!

    Excellent Headers

I Purchased these headers with the BBK Off Road X Pipe, I had a shop install them, cost $650.00 Pretty good Price I Believe. I do suggest go also purchase Item #64075 (02 Sensors). After a Tune the check engine light was still on. I could be wrong but in my case the stock 02 sensors couldn't handle the difference of the headers. ( But if your there might as well change them anyway) After adding the new 02 sensors Light went out and no issues. Also added Item #384126 KandN Series 69 Typhoon Air Intake (11-14 GT). She Screams Now, and Has Long Legs, Amazing Power Difference. If your a power nut like me I would get the Bama X4/SF4 Power Flash Tuner and the free tunes for life. What a difference in the power, gas mileage roughly 14MPG after all complete and tuned.

    WHOA

the sound, the power, the response is amazing. BUT i had a mechanic do this job also with my help every step the way so i can learn and such. this job was hard! very "tedious" job. again well worth every second. this took us 12 hours but 2 hours were because of very stupid stuff so IF IF IF IF IF everything goes smooth it will take 8-10 hours at a regular pace. again, a job like this ANYTHING can go wrong or cause a delay. oh ya, these thing SCREAM at WOT but at idle or regular driving it is pretty quiet.

    BBK Ceramic Long Tube Headers

I took these to a local shop to have them installed. I called 5 different places and only 2 were willing to tackle the job, yep, that's how difficult it is to do. So for those of you thinking about tackeling this task yourself make sure you are an expert mechanic because from what the shop owner told me he will never take a job like this again. Now for the review, all I have to say is I can't believe the power gains from these things. It is absolutely ridiculous. I am going to have to buy new tires because my car is spinning through 3 gears and gets sideways NO PROBLEM! Zero to 60 seems like less than 4 seconds and I'm not exaggerating. I was thinking about putting a turbo on my car this summer but I'm starting to wonder whether I need it now. The sound is unbelievable though I did put the off road X pipe which helps dramatically. This is the single most important bolt on you could possibly want for your car! Couldn't have been happier. FYI until you tune the car your check engine light will stay on so don't freak out when you see it. I can't wait until I get my tune, no telling what kind of results I will have. Get these as soon as you financially can, IT'S WORTH IT!!

    Good bang for buck

When it came to headers, I was not willing to spend $1,500 or so on ceramic/stainless steel headers. There was no point in spending that when they can be changed in an afternoon/day on your back if you have the right tools if the headers were damaged or worn out over time so I went with BBK. The fitment is great, but as with any longtube header you run the risk of tapping the collector on a speed bump especially on a lowered car. Other than having a few zip-ties handy, the install is very straight forward, just time consuming. If you are not willing to spend an entire day working on the car, just pay an exhaust shop to do it. If they tell you it's too hard, they aren't that great of a shop. Taking the K-Member down takes about an hour to an hour and a half. The rest of the fight is getting to the bolts and making sure everything is torqued down. The gaskets that are included are great and will work fine, but the Ford OEM header gaskets are a little better in my opinion.

Hard to tell about actual power gains from this product alone. I installed Steeda CAI, shorty xpipes and used an SCT programmer also. This car is super fast now! I ran it up to 160 mph and it was still pulling... I would recommend this upgrades to any one with the Coyote motor. These add ons are definitely worth the money!
