Review & Installation Video

Review & Install Video

Hi I’m Justin with, and this is our breakdown of BBK’s tuned length shorty header, available in your choice of either ceramic or chrome for the 2005-2010 Mustang GT. So why would you want to use a set of shorty header versus a set of long tubes? Well in a nutshell, a shorty header is a great entry level header. For one, they’re generally less expensive than a set of long tubes, and they’re going to be easier to install thanks to the fact that you don’t have to modify your mid pipe like you would using long tubes. A shorty header might not make as much power as a set of long tubes, but it’s still going to be a solid upgrade over those cast iron factory manifolds. These particular headers feature what BBK refer to as their tuned length runner design, which basically makes them a hybrid between a long tube and a standard shorty header. In the end, BBK claims slightly more power using these headers versus your standard shorty design, while still maintaining a no modification needed, direct bolt on. Taking a closer look at these headers, you’ll see they feature 1 and 5/8” mandrel bent tubing for better flow, and laser cut flanges for an OEM like fit. As I mentioned before you do have the option of picking these shorties up in either a ceramic coating, or a chrome finish. So what are the differences going to be between the two finishes? For one you can see the chrome finish is a little brighter now, but that’s going to change as these headers heat cycle, turning that bright silver chrome color into a more copperish blue color. However, the ceramic coated headers will stay that bright silver color over the years. Secondly, that ceramic coating is going to be much better at reducing underhood temps, which is always better for performance. Those added benefits do come at a price as ceramic coated headers are generally more expensive than chrome headers, or even stainless steel headers. Doing the install on any set of headers can be a little intense, so it’s a great idea to leave yourself a full day, just in case anything goes wrong. As always if you don’t feel confident with the install, don’t be afraid to give your local shop a call, they should be able to help you out. So if you’re looking for a bolt on header with the installation and price benefits of a shorty header design, with the performance to back it up, then you’ll definitely want to check out a set of these BBK tuned length shorty headers for your ride today.

Tuned Length Design. BBK Shorty "Tuned Length" Headers out perform both the factory manifolds and regular shorty headers. Tuned Length Headers have a unique extended tubular design that allows for unrestricted exhaust flow to increase horsepower and torque. Perfect for street and strip.

Quality BBK Construction. BBK Shorty Tuned Length Headers are manufactured from 1-5/8" CNC mandrel bent tubing for unrestricted airflow. And feature one piece laser cut 3/8" header flanges for additional strength, leak-free performance and a OEM fit. These headers are then completed in a bright chrome finish for good looks and a long life.

Application. Designed as a direct bolt on, these BBK Shorty Tuned Length Headers will bolt straight up in the stock location to the factory Mid-Pipe without any modifications on both automatic and manual 2005 to 2010 GT and 2008 to 2009 Bullitt Mustangs to improve exhaust flow and sound.

Technical Notes. These BBK Shorty Headers are CARB certified (CARB EO Number: D-245-16) and 50 state legal.

How much power gain ? How much would this give you in HP. I have an 06 Mustang GT with the Pypes Pype Bomb, and Cut and clamp X pipe. With a K&N CAI,

  • I installed these along after already having FRPP intake manifold, C&L CAI and Borla cat-back. Once these where on i did notice much more response to throttle input and that is currently on a 91 tune.

Chrome vs Ceramic coated headers. How much under the hood heat difference can you expect to see between chrome vs ceramic? Will chrome headers be any hotter than the stock manifolds and create problems for other componets (EX: hose, tubes or plastic boxes or parts).

  • The ceramic coated definitely will lower underhood temps and look good as well.

Shorty Headers and Cut and Clamp X pipe. Hiya, I have the Pypes cut and clamp X pipe on with Pype-Bomb Axle Back Exhaust. Will the BBK Shorty Headers install without problem? Any expected HP Gains? Thanks!

  • Ignore the people who say that shorty headers make no gains. They have probably never driven a car with them installed. To be sure, long tubes make MORE power, but those who say shorties make no difference have not seen the dyno charts that show that shorties make as much as 20HP along the curve. It's just that they do not add to peak HP that they think they have no power. I have the BBK Tuned Length headers and they made a huge difference in acceleration and power. My wife who usually thinks my mods do next to nothing, drove the Mustang to the store and came back and slammed the keys down and said, "JEEEEEEZZ!!! This car is RIDICULOUS." If even she noticed a huge difference in power, so will you. I can't vouch for the X pipe, but you will certainly make power with the headers. If you plan on installing them yourself as I did, be prepared to spend the entire weekend doing it. It is VERY time consuming and VERY frustrating. If it's in your budget to have a professional do it, then I would do that instead.

I have a corsa axle back and muffler delete will these headers make my car a lot better sound or is it just more of a small gain of noise

  • It would be difficult to describe sound as it can be subjective. We would highly recommend listening to a few sound clips to see if it were a sound that you liked or disliked.

I have a pypes h-pipe. Will the h-pipe be a direct bolt on for these headers?

  • Any H-Pipe designed to work with factory or short tube headers should be a direct bolt on to these BBK Chrome Tuned Length Shorty Headers.

I have an 07 GT with Flowmaster Outlaw exhaust. Will this product fit that exhaust?

  • If you are looking to use the BBK shorty headers, the one thing you would need to have it work with your Flowmaster Outlaw would be a BBK mid-pipe. Whether you decide to go with a catted or off-road x-pipe from BBK is up to you, but it will be the component that you need to mate to the headers. Also, if you do not have the Flowmaster Outlaw already, I would recommend purchasing an exhaust which the piping size is 2.75" as that is the size of the BBK mid-pipe.

    High quality product

These headers are very high quality, fit perfectly and look beautiful even after the heat has slightly discolored them. The instruction sheet claims an " approximate 2 hour" install, possibly if you've done it 3 times before! Plan on a more realistic 5-7 hours. It's not extremely difficult but there are some items that are difficult to access. I suggest removing the battery and battery tray on the passengers side and the Evap purge valve from the drivers side strut tower for better access. I also suggest that you bolt up the drivers side header first and after a short break as it is the more difficult to install and tighten the header bolts on, particularly the last 2 on top at the rear. If you are tired when trying start and tighten these 2 bolts, you will easily get frustrated. As for the sound and performance, the cadence changes a bit due to the "tuned length" changing the order of the exhaust pulses so the sound is different and a bit lower toned with some added decibels. I feel it pull a little harder from about 3500 rpm up but not a tremendous difference. I'm very happy with my purchase and love the way they look under the hood!

    the final touch

After modifications to the engine (Steeda CAI, Steeda underdrive pulleys,SCT Tuner, Steeda axleback exhaust, Ford Racing 4:10 gears, Steeda tri ax shifter,Stack Racing throttlebody spacer- Thanks AM !! ) this was exactly what my stang needed to round out the modifications. A much deeper exhaust sound than before and a noticable difference in power. Had them installed at a custom exhaust shop, took him the better part of the day. A must have modification to bring your stang to the next level !!

I took thoose pictures and believe me it was as hard to take the pictures as well as the installation. I tried to install them myself and I have installed headers before. I got half way thru the installation and took it down to my mechanic. maybe it's because I am getting older but I just did not want to foll with it. But this is a great product the headers are amazing with the pypes exhaust.

    2006 GT opinion

The job for the headers was easy, except if you are a big guy. Better be ready to take some stuff out of the way so you can work on your beast to put them in. Only trouble for installing I had was connecting the passenger side exhaust up to the headers, a very awkward position to get to with the sensor in the way. Had to remove the battery and battery post to get to the spot to go it tightened down. Other than that, just take your time and in the end be prepared to turn heads and burn some rubber.

    08 GT Mustang

This install is not overly complicated, but there are a few suggestions. When you order the headers, order the O2 sensor extensions, you will appreciate this when you reconnect these. My E7 would not fit the studs, but my 7mm, 6point socket worked just fine. The passenger side requires that most of the studs be removed before OEM exhaust can be removed, the one directly behind the AC compressor for sure. Be careful replacing motor mount brackets, very easy to cross thread the bolts,if you do, just take a 8mm tap, and clean up the threads and your good to go. This is a good, medium difficulty install, if your mechanical, then you expect some difficulties, that is what makes doing it yourself fun, but there are few with these headers. If I had to rate the most difficult part of this install, doing it on floor jacks, it would be the O2 sensor reconnect, and getting the H-pipe back up by yourself, the other install steps, are just expected, take your time stuff. I think that\'s the key here, take your time, and it will come out perfect. I would be remiss, if I did not mention the added kick in the seat of the pants performance boost. My 08 Stang, is now toting a Roush Cold air kit, BBK twin 62mm Throttle Body, and BBK Headers, American Muscle Rules, for parts and prices. Nuff said.

    Great product! One minor flaw.

These headers are a great upgrade to anyones S197. They give you nice exhaust flow combined with Pypes cut and clamp x-pipe. The only thing i would point out is that they change purple and blue with in 30 mins of driving. I understand they are not ceramic, however i just thought the chrome color would have lasted longer being that mine is not supercharged. I would still recommend these headers to S197 owners they are a great buy for the price. Thanks AM!

    BBK Tuned Headers

'09 GT has K&N CAI, 62mm BBK Throttle body and SCT flash tune. The tuned headers round out the combo really well. Tremendous low and mid range gains in HP and torque, plus the exhaust sounds really great. Quality of the chrome headers is very good ...instructions for install were right on...good product...HP and torque gain per $$ very definitely worth it
