Review & Install Video

Hey I’m Justin with AmericanMuscle.com, and I’m taking a closer look at the Modern Billet™ upper and lower retro Billet grille options available for your 2013 Mustang GT. This retro inspired product is from industry leader Modern Billet™, if you’re a fan of that Billet styling, then you need to check these guys out. Exterior to interior, then have a ton of cool stuff available for your ride. Of course both these grilles are constructed using 100% lightweight quality Billet aluminum, and are available in your choice of either a bright polished finish, or a stealthy black finish shown back there on our GT. In addition since both grilles are designed using OEM Ford CAD data, you can expect a perfect fit on your Mustang. The unique feature with this upper grille is pretty obvious, as you can see on first glance it appears to get rid of that iconic Pony emblem, and those signature GT fog lights resulting in a very clean look, but the cool part is with this upper grille while it does get rid of that running Pony emblem, you can still retain those factory GT headlights, and have them hidden behind the actual grille itself, or you can choose to remove them completely like we’ve done with our 2013 here, it’s entirely up to you. Again using our 2013 for reference here in the shop, you can see the upper grille is a complete factory replacement, meaning you will need to remove your factory grille before getting started with the install of the new Billet unit. On the other hand, that lower grille is an overlay and that just means it simply attaches to the factory lower grille. Because you will need to remove the front bumper to install the new Billet grille, we’re going to call the upper grille an hour from start to finish, while the bottom overlay should only take you about a half hour. Of course the grilles are available separately so if you just want to go with the upper or the lower grille, but if you want to achieve a more dramatic look, you could try pairing both grilles together, and you’ll even save yourself a few bucks by purchasing both at the same time. So if you’ve been looking at your 2013 GT and wondering what it would look like to clean up the front end by deleting the Pony emblem and the GT fog lights, here’s your chance to get that look while still having the option to retain those fog lights, thanks to these upper and lower Billet grilles from Modern Billet™.

Retro Upper Grille. Add an aggressive edge to your Mustang with a retro style grille that features 7 horizontal bars. This 7 Bar Retro Upper Grille has a very unique design that allows you to keep your factory fog lights intact behind the grille or you can remove them altogether, the choice is up to you! This upper grille is a replacement grille that requires removing your factory grille.

Matching Lower Grille. The optional 5 Bar Lower Billet Grille is a perfect match to the Upper Grille to complete the appearance of your Mustang. The Lower grille is an overlay that attaches over the factory lower grille.

Quality Construction. Designed with the original OEM CAD data from Ford to ensure a perfect fit, both the upper and lower grilles are constructed from strong lightweight billet aluminum that is completed in a durable semi-gloss black powdercoated finish for an aggressive appearance and corrosion resistance.

Application. These Modern Billet Black Retro Billet Grilles are designed to fit the 2013-2014 GT Mustang. The Upper and Lower Grilles are available separately or together as a Combo Kit. Please select from the ordering options above.

Bumper cover removal required for install ? Install time needed says about 30 minutes, so I'm assuming that removing the bumper cover is not needed for installing these grilles? I'm looking at both, the upper and the lower pieces but am not willing to remove the bumper cover if that's what's needed for install.

  • Yes, the lower grille will fit both the 2013 GT and V6. As for the upper, we've received lots of feedback requesting more grille options for the V6 Mustangs. There will be some new additions added to our inventory in the near future!

Review from Modern Billet Black Retro Grille - Combo (13-14 GT)

Great look, a bit of a pain to install from wrong hardware.

As mentioned by most this really makes the front look a lot better. It is not required to remove the front bumper, but I would recommend it as well as it does make it a lot easier. I was also doing the LED blinker conversion so this let me have access to all of it at once anyways. The instructions are great for removing the front bumper, but the install of the upper grill is more of an idea on how to more than exact as the pictures are not clear at all. The lower grill is very simple, but I also do not like how it retains the factory honeycomb grill; I will change this at a later date. As for the hardware problems the upper grill screws stripped trying to go in to the retaining tabs you add over the grill mounting tabs; had to replace two of them. I also did not get matching hardware for the lower grill; the bolts were M5 and the toggles were M4 so I was lucky that I had some bolts that would work. So after having to work around those issues I got it all in along with my black chromed Tri-Bar emblem.

Review from Modern Billet Black Retro Grille - Combo (13-14 GT)

    Good Product, tricky install

First off I will start off by staying I am very happy with this product. It looks great and allowed me to hide the foglights behind it and get rid of the pony emblem for a cobra. However, The install of this item was significantly harder than I expected. A lot of times I was afraid to put as much pressure as needed to release clamps or tabs as it felt I was going to break them. Another thing I feel that should be fixed is the four screws you use to hold the new inside grille into the intermediate should be significantly shorter to avoid scratching the outer grille when re-installing. Overall I recommend this product just be careful and be prepared for the install.

    Nice 'n clean

This grille gives the front end a nice cleaned up look, and I love it. installation is super easy... you really DON'T NEED TO DRILL simply put a little muscle in it when screwing into the soft plastic grille surround... it's really very easy... as for the holes, they are so far back you'll never see them if you ever want reinstall the factory grille. Only complaint yet again is the bottom grille. It needs to be a full replacement, and not just an overlay. I am sure people will pay the extra cash for the extra quality.

    Not high quality

I made the mistake of taking off my front bumper before looking at the finish on the upper grille. It was quite a disappointment. There were runs and spots that weren't even painted. Some spots had permanent marker colored in to cover the mistakes. I wasn't going to put the bumper back on just to take it back off so there it sat in my garage for 4 days waiting on a replacement grille. Replacement was much better but still not what I expected from AM. Don't assume it's high quality finish. Double check. AM should take care of you. Also, when fitting the grille to mark the holes, tape the edges of the billet grille and the grille shell. The aluminum can be sharp and scratch up the shell like it did mine. It looks great installed but the thought of the poor quality takes away from looks.

Review from Modern Billet Black Retro Grille - Combo (13-14 GT)

    Worth every penny

This grille looks awesome once installed correctly. I ordered the combo upper and lower grille and it arrived within 24 hours. The only problem with this grille is the instructions provided are very unclear and there is not much guidance online for the proper installation. The pictures provided in the instructions were of no help with actually installing the grille, which included drilling 2 holes for the upper grille. Packaging was great, and I found no blemishes on either grille. Removal of the front clip is recommended, but not required. If you want to keep your fog lights you have to mount the upper grille almost flush with the grille surround to have enough room to clear the fog lights... Note that this is not included in the instructions anywhere and I had to drill another set of holes in the surround to account for this. Overall, I love the look and the price can't be beat.

    Awesome look

The install was straight forward, you don't need to jack up the front end, but it might help to take off the bumper. Putting the top grill on was very straight forward but the bottom grill on was a little more of a challenge. I personally don't like the look of the bottom grill with the honeycomb behind it, i decided to remove the honeycomb grill. The problem with that is the new grill needs the honeycomb grill to attach to. To solve this problem I put the screw going from the backside of the bumper forward, so the fastener is on the outside of the grill. You can't notice anything is different unless you are looking for it. Other than that it was super straight forward and was a fun little project.

    Looks AWESOME!

Spent this afternoon installing both the lower and upper grille, The upper fitment is okay, ended up having to slightly modify the u bracket and screws.. Over the upper install when you keep the fogs is a PIA! Make sure you line it up with both pieces and that the fog lights aren't touching the grill. I decided to remove the OEM lower grill and make a bracket "this is the way to go IMO!" and the fitment is perfect! As far as the instructions, removing the bumper is spot on and pictures are clear. The part "allign like photo below" is not good, the picture is basically black. IMO, buy it just make sure you have atleast 4 hours and a second pair of hands doesn't hurt either. BTW I'm a decent size man with the car lowered and had no need for stands or a lift.

Great looks, less than great fitment

I shopped this grill even before I bought my 2013 GT. The factory grill left a lot to be desired in the visuals with the front of the car and I instantly fell in love with the American Muscle billet retro. The grills were on backorder when I got the car and I was very excited to receive the email that they were in fact back in stock--I placed my order within a couple hours. I got the tracking information promptly so I went ahead and pulled off the front bumper and disassembled the grills prior to the new grills arriving so I could be ready for the car show that weekend. The grills arrived at my door with ample packaging and lots of padding inside the boxes to prevent damage. Upon opening the boxes however, both the upper and lower grills were deformed and misshapen as if they weren't made properly. They are basically just strips of aluminum molded together then welded to a few braces to hold the shape. The farthest high and low bars from each grill were bent to the point they were touching the next closest bar. They are made out of metal so I was able to bend them back into shape but the overall appearance is a little less than what I was expecting. Because I had plans over the weekend for the car show, I went ahead and installed them as-is so I didn't have to put the stock grills back in. Overall they look very nice, but be ready for potentially having to adjust them out of the box. I have received a lot of compliments on them thus far, I just wish they fit better.

Even with the protective padding, there could still have been shipping damage to the grilles as they should be a perfect fit on your '13 GT. Please give us a call at your earliest convenience so that we can take care of this for you!

    Awesome Grilles!

I installed this upper and lower grille on my 2013 GT in one afternoon and I highly recommend them if you are looking to change the look of the front end of your car. Install was very easy even though you have to take off the bumper cover, it's very easy and only takes around 10 minutes to do so and the instructions provided are very clear. I'm very happy with the new grilles and definitely recommend them!

Honestly a painful install, but WORTH IT

I'll be completely honest - you wonder why this grille is so much cheaper than the others...well you get what you pay for. A pain to install, and I can't see anyone being able to install in 30 minutes. The lips for the screws come bent in different angles, so I had to take the pliers and straighten them out to fit. Then came the screws - getting them to fit through the holes in the lips and the provided locking nuts are a pain as well - I pretty much had to blindly guess as to where exactly the holes were when drilling through my grille frame. But I managed to do it after 3 hours. The grille itself is a beautiful gloss black - except for one small area in the corner that was missed (no idea why AM would even ship, having obviously seen this missed spot). But the grille is absolutely SOLID. I was worried that you'd see the factory lower grille, but you can't. With my Raxiom smoked halo fog lights (for the GT) peering from behind, it looks WICKED. Love the blacked out look. Seriously changed the whole look of the car.

Really do not like the look of the stock honeycomb inserts plus everyone has them. This is a well made METAL cover that attach's in minutes using toggle bolt attachments. If the toggle spins as you try to tighten them just insert a screwdriver and use it to stop the toggle from spinning. Within seconds it will become secure. Recommend to loosely attach each side then tighten them both up it makes it even easier. Really improves the look of the front of the car.

    love the new look!!

I really like the new grill and was able to keep my fog lights. I only drive with the running light and the hid factory fog lamps on and its still really bright. I would of just like to have a vid for how to remove the bumper being a little scared to pull on the corners thinking I was going to bust the whole bumper. But well worth the time and effort for the look of the grill. Thank you American muscle for the quike shipping and tracking numbers.

    billet grille is a must!!

let me start off by telling everyone about the billet grille. 1) the billet grille is a high quality aluminum metal with a very nice glossy black powder coat finish. in my opinion it weights about or less the stock honeycomb grille.2) americanmuscles installation instructions are easy to follow including colored pictures. 3) i suggest a second set off hands on removing the bumper just in case you don't trust yourself, but one can do this alone. 4) to make things easier on the install i highly recommend to apply painters tape around the grille surround on the bumper and yank it off! like the cdc (shelby look alike grille video) its a bit tricky to pop the taps to separate the honeycomb grille.5) now one thing that is going to confuse some people on the billet grille install is how far back the grille sits. at this point reinstall your fog lights on the stock grille surround. on the instructions it doesn't tell you to cut off 2 taps on the stock surround. this is where people will get confused. 6) install the stock grille surround on the bumper and align the new billet grille in the opening. from a glance you will notice on the back of the grille 4 taps. 2 on top 2 on bottom. once you align the grille. match the 2 top tabs on the grille to the stock grille surround. cut the 2 taps off the stock surround and use the supplied hardware. your going to have to slide a self tapping washer were you cut the tap off and install the self tapping screw. 7) now for the bottom part align the billet grille taps till it sits flat and drill 2 small holes. no cutting on this one. your going to have to kinda eye ball the supplied self tapping screw into the supplied self tapping washer. notice how the bottom grille portion almost reaches the edge of the stock surround.8) other than this the install should be fairly easy. the hardest part is the honey comb removal. that's why i say yank it off! as for the drilling less than 1 min to finish that. Lastly over all appearance/quality/price is the best hidden fog light grille for the 2013 mustang on the market. this grille blows away the competition on the higher priced grilles and their quality is to plastic y. Ask me how i know? American muscle has done it again on awesome quality parts. i highly recommend this grille. don't be afraid to remove your bumper.

love the look and options with this grille

Best thing about this grille is the fact that you can keep your LED fogs if you wish to. I decided to take them out for now until I can get some tint so they will not be noticeable. Install took me about 3 hours but that was with removing the bumper and fabricating a bracket for the lower grille, as I did not want to mount it on top of the stock grille. love the look now and very happy with them. Best bang for your buck as far as a grille for the 2013 goes. All others are over $200 for just the upper. this is less and includes both upper and lower grille

Overall they look decent but finish is poor, many drips and runs but i am a perfectionist. Hardware is terrible quality. i personally thought the lower grille looked very cheesy on top of the OEM grille so i ground and cut all the honeycomb out for a much better look.
