Review & Installation Video

Review & Install Video

Hey I’m Justin with AmericanMuscle.com, and this is my breakdown of the B&M hammer console ratchet shifter, fitting all 94-04 automatic Mustangs. Hot rodders have been looking to B&M for well over 50 years, for all of their performance shifting needs, and their presence is still just as strong in today’s muscle car world. Alright, we know the stock shifter can handle the daily driver duties just fine, but when you start getting serious about your street and strip performance, that stock shifter can quickly become a liability. You can miss shifts, get hung up between gears, and in some very rare, very extreme cases, even shift into neutral or reverse which obviously is never a good thing. When installed the B&M allows you to manually shift the forward gears of your Mustang, by either ratcheting up or down on the lever, or on the other hand you can just leave the shifter in drive and cruise around like you would using the factory shifter, it’s the best of both worlds. Thanks to the reverse lockout feature, you can easily bang those gears without having to worry about accidentally shifting into reverse. Taking a closer look at everything you receive from B&M, you can see this is a total package, of course they include the shifter mechanism itself but they also include a factory like shifter bezel, lighted gear indicator, leather shift boot, and a B&M T handle shift knob. This shifter is both NHRA and IHRA certified, making it an excellent choice for any street or strip Mustang. The hammer is a no modification needed bolt on for the AOD trans found in all 94-04 automatic Mustangs. You will need to do some work both inside and underneath the car, so make sure you have your jack stands or ramps ready before you get started. In addition you will need to wire in the overdrive button and LED illumination into your factory wiring, so just make sure you have a soldering iron ready. When it’s all said and done, you should be wrapped up in about 2 hours from start to finish. Perhaps one of the best features about this shifter that you won’t find in the product description, is that a majority of our customer reviews say the B&M ratchet shifter just makes the car more fun to drive, well there’s really only one way to find out, so with the shifter installed let’s grab our GT and put it to the test. Alright so we’re out in the 2000 GT, we’ve got the B&M ratchet shifter installed, and my first impression looks wise is it looks killer I mean it adds a little bit of that race car flavor to the interior, but we want to see how this thing performs. Right now we have it in drive, and we’re just kind of cruising around like you would in a normal automatic car, but what’s a ratchet shifter without actually shifting, so with that said, we’re coming up to a stop sign here, we’ll ratchet it on down into first. Alright, now we’ve got the car in first, we’ll pull out here from a stop and see if this thing shifts as it should. Hammer on, second, third, there you go, I mean it does kind of make driving an automatic fun in a way, I mean you’re shifting the car, again it’s not exactly like a manual car, you’re obviously not working the clutch but for the most part, it gives you something to do. Overall, total package, it looks great, performs as it should, and it’s a great value, so be sure to check out the B&M ratchet shifter for your 94-04 Mustang, right here at AmericanMuscle.com

Full Ratchet Action. The stock shifter is fine for daily driving, but it has some serious drawbacks when it comes to street/strip performance. The Mustang B&M Hammer Ratchet Shifter has a full ratchet action mechanism for solid positive shifts, so there is no fear of hanging up between gears or missing a gear all together.

Reverse Lockout. To prevent you from accidentally shifting into reverse while your banging through the gears the B&M Ratchet Shifter features a reverse lockout mechanism. To shift into neutral, reverse or park positions, just lift the trigger and ratchet the shifter forward for each position.

Direct Fit Installation. The B&M Hammer Console Ratchet Shifter was designed to the 1994-2004 Mustang's center console with no modifications required to the factory AODE transmission. And to further simplify the installation this ratchet shifter includes the neutral safety switch, backup light switch, lighted gear indicator, leather shift boot and polished aluminum T-Handle.

Application. This B&M Hammer Console Ratchet Shifter is designed to fit the 1994 to 2004 V6 and GT Mustang's equipped with an AODE Automatic Transmission and meets NHRA and IHRA requirements.

Can the knob be swapped? Is the shaft threaded to accept other shift knobs? If so, what is the thread size? Thanks!

TheAlmightyBunghole

  • Yes, although I do not have the thread size. It is just threaded on and only functions as the handle. There is a little metal plate under the handle that lifts the hammer for shifting, this cannot be swapped.

Hammer with Shift Kit good option? If I buy a shift kit and then buy the hammer shifter would it be a good combo in order to save those 500-600 rpm between shifting with the hammer. Also a bama tune ofcourse

Exceso

  • Get the Bama tune dont get the shift kit. The hammer wont make you lose any rpm's. The shift kit is just going to be a waste of time and money the Hammer has it all. Get the Hammer and the bama tune and you'll be a happy stallion

C4 Transmission Fitment I currently Own a 2002 GT with a TR3650. I will be swapping it out to a C4 3speed trans with a foward facing valve body. I Would love to put this shifter in because of its factory look and gear display. My question is will it be compatable with a C4 Trans. Thanks guys!

can you also down shift with this or how do you go down in gears i haven't been able to get a good understanding on how to use it which is holding me back from purchasing it.

leo

  • Yes you can. I use it at Auto-X events to hold the car in the gear I want as well. Your out of luck for shifting between 3rd and 4th though. The car still does that part for you since your options are only 1st, 2nd, and Drive. The install video for this that is on this page also shows Justin down shifting using the shifter.

    Hammer shifter

Very good product once installed. Missing some hardware for the adapter that holds the shift linkage in place. Other than that a very good product.

    fun for me

after reading all of the other reviews I actually thought it would be hard but it wasn't it only took me two and a half hours to install and it fits perfect it looks great in the console and for me is a lot of fun it gives you the fun of a manual drive car without the clutch and the ease of the automatic all together like I said fun for me I think anyone with the Mustang automatic that is would love this thanks AM

Great Shifter but need skill to install

I installed this shifter and in the end, I am glad I did, and love it. However, be warned, it isn't as easy as one thinks. The instructions that come with the kit are not really specific to the 4070W tranny, so there is some common sense and thinking involved while installing it. Everything lines up correctly, no problem there, but note there are no bolts and screws supplied for the adapter for attaching the cable under the car to its new holder on the shifter. Also, the interlock cable is troublesome with its adjustment. I had to use 3 really small washers to take the slack out of the cable to work properly. Also the standard transmission cable is a bit tight, therefore making the electronic overdrive a bit fussy (sometimes works, sometimes you have to wiggle the shifter to get it to change to overdrive). A bit of grinding the cable end at the linkage connection allowed just enough extra to solve that problem. All in all after the frigging around, the shifter works perfectly. I recommend this product, but you should know that there will be modifications and adjustments to be made to get it to work perfectly.

    B&M Hammer Shifter

I bought this product to test and experiment just what needed to be done to get this shifter matted to an 01+ 4r70w automatic. B&M was good enough to supply some extra hardware to ease the installation including a foam gasket, 2 lever pins, and of course the necessary hardware. The fit wasn't like a glove but as long as you're not in a rush it won't take too much time to seat the shifter properly. Getting the cable adjusted wasn't as sore either as I thought it would be. The only problem you'll need to pay attention to is the wiring and adjusting the shift cable and MLPS (Manual Lever Posit. Sensor) If it's not aligned with the shifter, you'll have the O/D light flash. What it all comes down to is the quality of the parts. They appear to be strong and mechanically attractive. It works well for what it does. Don't be afraid to buy this shifter if you own an 01-04 Mustang.

    Works great.

The insatll for this shifter was a pain, tons of adjusments needed to be made before all the gears would work, but in the end it was well worth it, reliable solid shifts. Its more about looks than the performance gain really, but its gonna be great at the track im sure.

    Looks and Works Good

I recently purchased this for my 04 V6. The product came well packaged and protected. Installation was easy and took less than an hour, or it would have but they did not include the screws for the shifter cable. I had to run out to get the ones in the manual they specify came with it but they did not fit. I then had to scrounge up some bolts and lock nuts to finish the job. Another problem I ran into was the old screws did not go back in good and stripped out while I was installing so I had to replace those. Mine also goes into park and shifts through all the gears fine but it won't push the cable far enough in to engage park properly and so the car does not start in park but only in neutral even after about 5 times of adjusting it but I kinda like this better. Other than that it delivers. Yon won't get much out of it as far as shifting goes if you have a tuner but it is very good for shifting from 3rd or 4th down to second. Overall it performs the way I expected it to and it looks way better than stock.

A MUST have for your auto stang!!!

This shifter is one badass add on to your mustang! This is exactly what I was looking for my auto 04 GT mustang! This shifter does make you automatic mustang more FUN to drive and as well makes your mustang interior stand out from the rest! I wanted the shifter to be put correctly so I took it to a shop and they took about 2 and a half. When they where done I couldn't believe how good it looked! This shifter may not give you hp but just the look it gives your mustang makes up for it! Overall the main feature you'll get from this badass shifter will be a good looking interior and you cant go wrong with having that! Some of my friends where jealous of it and for now Ill keep this my little secret!

This Shifter is worth it when finished!

This shifter is a great way to get that stock boring shifter out of your mustang and give it an old school custom look. For my '03, installation was a little bit tricky. The shifter cable was too short for the shifter to put the transmission in park so I had to remove the shifter cable and dremel out the slot on the shifter cable. After that, the shifter could put the car in park. The shifter looks amazing installed, and is definitely worth the time and money you put in your car.

    Fun Shifter

This shifter is really nice I have owned my mustang for about 4 years and always regretted not getting a manual but this shifter took away all of that. Its fun to play around and also if you get tired of shifting just throw it in drive and let her go. All in all this shifter is worth it especially if you install it yourself.
