    Review & Installation Video

Hey everyone, I’m Justin with AmericanMuscle.com, and today, I’m going to break down the BBK 78 mm throttle intake for all ’96-’04 Mustang GTs. This product from BBK combines two of their most popular items: the tried and true larger diameter BBK throttle body along with a very popular two-valve mod, the larger diameter intake elbow. This has combined it in one very sleek package that is a lot cheaper than ordering both products separately. Why would you want something like this versus your standard normal diameter throttle body? Well, as soon as you place a larger diameter throttle body on your stock intake plenum that is not port matched (meaning it is not matched to 78 mm), you’re instantly losing out on all that extra flow thanks to that larger throttle body. This kit from BBK takes care of all that. This throttle intake is offered in a massive 78 mm diameter, which will allow for maximum airflow. That’s also going to help with your looks under the hood as well, thanks to that very sleek black finish. That large diameter will be perfect for your forced induction setups, including superchargers or turbochargers when you have to move the absolute most amount of air through your motor. Installing this throttle intake for the first time is a relatively painless task that should only take a couple hours. You will need to transfer over both your intake air control valve and your TPS sensor from your stock unit over to the new BBK. After that, simply reinstall in reverse order, plug everything in, and you should be good to go. So if you’re looking to increase the airflow in your 2 valve 4-6, all the while increasing your throttle response and getting some big top-end gains, you’ll definitely want to check out this throttle intake from BBK Performance.

More Power. BBK Performance has designed and patented the first Throttle Intake. A Throttle Intake incorporates a high flow intake plenum and a larger 78mm BBK throttle body all in one great performing unit. This throttle intake is a direct bolt-on and is good for an additional 12 to 15 horsepower.

Quality Construction. This BBK Mustang throttle body is CNC machined from high quality 356 aluminum to ensure OEM quality and a perfect fit. Features like OEM die stamped throttle linkages, double sealed bearings, and o ringed throttle shafts make this throttle body one of best on the market today.

Application. BBK's 78mm throttle intake is designed to be a perfect fit on all 1996 to 2004 4.6L SOHC GT Mustang. This BBK brand throttle body reuses the stock throttle body gasket.

Please Note. A 78mm throttle body works great on a heavily modified or supercharged GT mustang, because stock or mildly modified GT's do not flow air enough to benefit from the larger Throttle Body.

would it be good to use on my almost stock 1999 gt ? All i have done to my car is a K&N intake, flowmaster 40'S mufflers and a BBK catted x pype. im planing on buying a bama tuner so wopuld that help too ?

    Ricardo

    • This would be too much air flow for your Mustang's engine. A better choice for power would be a 70mm Accufab or BBK unit. You would see the most gains from these throttle bodies with your combination. I would, also, suggest getting the matching upper plenum. Hope this answers your question and thanks for choosing American Muscle!

78mm for N/A or smaller?? For a naturally aspirated engine would you get more horsepower out of a larger intake such as this 78mm Throttle intake made by BBK, or would you get more horsepower out of a higher velocity intake with a smaller diameter such as the Accufab 70mm throttle body and plenum?

    Seanathon

    • This not so much an answer but a question are you going to remain stock? Upgrading to a larger throttle body is usually one of the first steps besides the exhaust in modding engines so if you are going to remain stock then the 70 mm would get you better gains but if you are going to put cams or power adders then the 78 is a must.

I have a 03 mustang GT with BBK longtube headers non cAtted bbk mid pipe and slp loudmouth exhaust I do have a S b intake iwanted to buy the 78mm bbk throttle body and get my car dyno tuned right after will this product affect my car in any way?

    Ryan

    • The BBK 78mm Throttle Intake will increase performance and air flow, however since it is after the Mass Airflow sensor and Intake air temp sensors, the PCM is able to read and accommodate for these changes. This part will have little to no effect on the tune because of this.

I had just installed this throttle body today. After finishing and starting the car, it idled rough in a way that resembles a car that is "cammed out". Even though I like the sound it makes, as it is far more aggressive, I want to know if that is supposed to be the reaction. I have an SR CAI already with the throttle body and a custom BAMA tune on its way. I did notice an increase in power and a nice whistle when I shift almost resembling a turbo but not quite. Anyways, please let me know if the rough and aggressive idle is anything to worry about, or if it will adjust over time or with the tune. Thanks!

    • I am sorry to here about this. This may be your TPS. If your Throttle position sensor is off this could be the cause of the hard idle. Give us a call in and we can help you out with this!

      Great product

Arrived fast, looks great, and fit even better. So far I love this plenum, throttle response is probably 50 better and the pedal feels about 20 lighter, making the gas pedal a little touchy at first. This plenum breathes WAY better than stock on my 2v 4.6 and makes a little whistle sound under load. My build is all bolt on N/A and this plenum works great, not too big. Others have said their cars were a little boggier in the bottom end but I haven't seen that. Biggest thing I've noticed power wise is 3-5.5k the engine revs quicker, thus getting to peak hours faster. Sorry I don't have a real sensitive butt Dyno to give you some number

      Be Careful Guys/Girls !!

First, when I bought this item the BBK sign in the middle was a (sticker) not an ingraved word of BBK. Second, I followed through all the instructions on the website and everything seemed fine, but when I started the car I received a rough, slow, and noisy ideal. Three minutes later after letting the car sit in ideal, I noticed smoke and than a check engine light appeared on. After doing further inspection the smoke was steam coming from a hole in my (Heater Core Hose) leaking on the intake manifold. I figured the hole came from the anoumous amount of pressure the 78mm was giving out. The Check engine light was a code P0122 (TPS) Throttle postion Sensor, which had blown during the Three minutes I had let the car ideal for needed replacement. Do to my 01 being my only car I had to place my stock back in inorder to go to work while I wait for those parts. American Musucle you need to come with it next time !!!!

      Great product

Noticeable horsepower increase...the major difference is the throttle response(ie. The time it takes from putting the pedal down to when the rpms come up..)

Performs well, but annoying QC issues

Pleased with the performance improvement and overall quality and ease of installation. As others have stated, it produces a slight whistle under certain throttle conditions. However, there were three annoying issues - two minor, and one major. The first minor issue is the TPS bushing. It is not required on the 78mm model, but the instructions call for installation of the "included bushing." There is no included bushing. I had to call BBK tech support to clear that up. The instructions for a $300 part should be more clear. The second minor issue is the fitting for the PCV breather hose. When you screw in the fitting, the hex portion that fits close to the throttle body interferes slightly with the IAC gasket. You have to trim a corner off the IAC gasket to get it to line up correctly. BBK could have moved the hole over just a hair to prevent that from happening. Possibly if you screw the fitting all the way down tight, it might clear, but the fitting is plastic and only so much torque can be applied. I didn't think it was wise to tighten it down any more than I did. The major issue was the throttle stop screw. The factory-installed loctite was insufficient to hold it in position. After about a week of driving with no issues, I suddenly got a high idle, consistently at 1,500 - 2,000 RPM, and once close to 4,000 after stopping at a stop light. The car was not drivable. It never occurred to me to check the throttle stop screw, because it had been secured in place with loctite, so I chased all the usual suspects implicated in a high idle situation - TPS, IAC, vacuum leak, etc. This took a week of fiddling around. By chance I happened to notice that the dab of loctite on the throttle stop screw and the corresponding dab on the throttle body itself didn't align, and it was then I noticed that the screw had moved significantly towards the throttle bracket, holding open the throttle plate slightly, and causing the high idle. There was no loctite on the actual threads of the screw, only a dab on the outside. That's not acceptable, particularly because the screw is very easy to turn (finger pressure will do it, no need for a tool) and just vibration from driving had caused it to advance and essentially hold the throttle partially open. That could result in a dangerous driving condition. I have since fixed the issue, but it should never have happened.

      BBK 78mm FTW

I was very skeptical of wasting my money on this mod . Decided to order it , since I got the airaid cold air intake.. install was easy .. no need to take to a shop ... the only pain was my old coupler didn't fit so I had to order a 3.25in coupler . I saw a diffence immediately once I started the car... exhaust tone changed and sounded more crisp... you can feel the air in intakes... compare it to the old stock throttle body and u will see how big difference is ... follow me on Instagram : Issa_gt

      Buy it!

This throttle intake is a must buy... Once you take off and look inside your stock throttle body, your gonna be disappointed in yourself that you didn’t put this one on earlier... The BBK 78mm also has a great performance gain, especially in first and second gears. The whistle also sounds Awesome!

Works perfect on a stock 2 valve

This is among those bolt on mods that you can do for your Mustang that performs better than you would expect. I have read on American Muscle quote "Please Note. A 78mm throttle body works great on a heavily modified or supercharged GT mustang, because stock or mildly modified GT's do not flow air enough to benefit from the larger Throttle Body." This is actually not true. CandL dyno tested their plenum with the stock throttle body as well as a 70mm and a 75mm. Anything smaller than a 75mm caused a power loss, this was on a stock (as far as airflow mods were concerned) 2 valve GT engine. 3 more millimeters isn't going to cause problems or any kind of loss. I saw an INCREASE in low end torque as well as top end power, the motor pulls strong with no power drop off all the way till it hits the rev limiter and all I have bolted onto my GT is this, a KandN filter in the stock airbox and a MAC catback, THAT'S IT. This is the best solution for 2 valve owners looking for a throttle body and an inlet elbow, you won't find a combo like this for cheaper at the same quality. Install.....Putting this on is really straight forward and doesn't take long. The most difficult thing was getting the stock rubber inlet tube to fit over the throttle body inlet. This should be your first engine mod as the stock throttle body and plenum really just chokes these engines at any rpm above 4800. After install you can easily turn these motors all the way to 6000 with no power fall off, This is how these cars should have performed from the factory.

      Nice Throttle Intake, Bad Support

Purchased this a week ago, came in 2 days on a Friday, was quick shipping. Took apart the old stock TB, had problems with getting plastic fitting on for one vaccum hose. Unit was shipped "opened" (meaning factory tape was sliced) and the vaccumed seal plastic bag with all screws, gaskets and bushings was opened before I even got to it. -_- Bushing was plundered and swapped with a different one (wrong size) which didn't allow for me to install for the weekend. AM said for 3-5 days a new bushing was coming but never did. Called BBK direct for a new bushing, they said for the 78mm it wasn't required. Wasted a week waiting on a bushing that was not needed. If you have your factory TPS, get a new one. Your old one will have fits on the new BBK TB. It costs like $35-40 for a new one. Performance once new TPS was installed was great. Need better pictures or video showing throttle linkage. Got a little hung up on that but figured it out. AM has failed to fix this issue and my other issue I had with my exhaust. Said they would make it right, never did. Not chasing them for promises they failed to keep.
