Great replacement for the stock handle.

Looks great, feels great. If you are looking for a replacement for that dull factory shift handle this is it. It also has a relocation area for the overdrive button built in.

Review & Install Video

Hey everyone I’m Justin with AmericanMuscle.com and I’m taking a look at a part that will add a subtle touch of Billet customization to the interior of any automatic 87-04 Mustang thanks to this T handle shift knob. T handle shifters have been in the interiors of Mustangs since the 60’s, and now thanks to this Billet piece, your ride can share the same classic styling, all while still maintaining your overdrive function. The name says it all: Billet. This knob is manufactured from 100% aircraft grade Billet aluminum, and is sure to last the life of your Mustang. It also features a very comfortable grip, and a nice aluminum finish, which is a great improvement over the cheap factory knob. Depending on whether or not your car is equipped with overdrive, your install time may vary a little, we’ll call it 45 minutes just to be safe. You will need some allen wrenches, a torc set, some wire cutters, and a zip tie. Don’t worry, you’re not cutting any wires but you will have to relocate your overdrive button. Once you get past that, it’s a piece of cake. Now this shift knob looks great on its own, but if you’re like me, and you’re always searching for more ways to customize your ride, then you might want to check out one of our polished Billet interior dress up kits, or even a set of chrome gauge bezels to complete the look. So if you’re tired of that boring factory shift knob and you want to replace it with something that really shines, you’ll definitely want to check out this retro T-handle shift knob for your ride.

Shifter Boot? Could I buy a shifter boot to go along with this to make it look way better, do you have one that would fit at AM

Sage

  • There are a few you could make fit ( boots are usually for manual shifters ), and I think it would be kind of a shame to cover alot of the looks of that shifter. Personally I think it's kind of cool the way it is.

relocate O/D button to the dash or? could the O/D button be moved to the dash area by the shifter?

yankees03

  • Yea, you can put it anywhere, but why? Essentially, you are just replacing an old knob. The switch fits into the new one. Remember this, it is a factory wire harness and is designed to go in the handle. They don't use too much extra wire. To relocate it you will probably have to splice in your own wire to legnthen it for relocation. I'm not saying it will, but if you made even the slightest mistake in the splice, you will have to take it back apart. If you have some of the luck I do, It'll be dark, cold, and raining!

Paint? I know alot like it the way it is, but i like the look of my black shifter. But, I like the style of this one better. Does this take paint? If it will, any certain kind since its the polished alum?

  • well prep work is a MUST!!! can not state that enough. scuff the whole thing with fine steel wool. use a oil grease and wax paint prep (available at places like auto zone etc.) then choose the paint you want. I would use something like SEM. prob go with semi-gloss not gloss or black. but that's up to you. remember nice warm temp when painting. use light mist coats, not heavy....!!!! take your time and the results will show! take a look on youtube, some great how-to paint videos. Good luck and be sure to post pics when done...love to see finished project.

needs the thinnest shaft T-20 torx driver you can find

The install is simple if you have small hands and a super thin shafted torx driver. It took longer to find the size tool (T-20) and figure how to get to the screws, than the actual work. The terminal block for the OD wire does have a flat-head screw driver slot for release (if you can see it) Total time 2-hrs, I also used the original spring in the lever. It actually shifts soomther and better than the plastic original and does look cool. I now could do this same install in less than a hour.

    Good addition

It\\\'s a great product. Install is tricky with the OD wire. You\\\'ll end up needing some star bits to remove the bezel and get rid of the zip tie holding the wire down and as mentioned the connector is a pain to get to. I disconnected my center console to get to it a little easier.

    install instrructions

Tools needed: Torx bit set, metric and standard Allen keys, wire cutters, 1 small zip tie. Remove the shifter trim housing, put the car in 1st gear with the car off and the emergency brake on. Look for a small hole in the front of the shifter, insert the Allen key into the hole and unscrew the bolt. You will then be able to lift the stock shifter knob off the shaft. You will then need to unscrew the 2 Torx bolts located to the bottom left of the shift indicator housing and then cut the small zip tie holding the O/D harness off of the shifter arm. Unplug the harness and remove the wire and the complete shifter knob out of the car. You can then feed the button and housing out of the old knob. Install is the exact reverse of the removal. execellent product

looks awesome, easy install. and when i put it all together the release button was a little shallow for my liking, so i took the spring out of the stock shift knob and put it in this one. works like a dream

    Excellent quality

Like the previous reviewer (Ralph) stated, \"once you get past the OD button, it\'s cake.\" Take your time with the relocation section of the install. The OD connector is difficult to get to. I had to remove the bezel around the shifter and use a flashlight to see what exactly I was looking for. Overall, this is an excellent product and really livens up the interior of your Mustang!

    Solid look

Very nice, looks good with the billet a/c knobs. Not too \'blingy\', good solid feel. The o/d wiring is a pain though. Should have photographed the install, photos would help. Lost a star for the lack of better install instructions.

I recommend this with some reservation.

First let me say I did not call AM for assistance with this issue as I should have. That being said I bought this item for my wife"s 99 coupe because it looked awesome. Unfortunately the problem I had with it is the little screw that holds the handle on refuses to stay tight even with thread locker.& the handle release button sticks so you could easily end up in second going down the highway at 70 mph. It;s entirely possible this is an rare situation which given the high quality AM is know for is most likely. If anyone at AM know's how I can fix this issue please contact me. If you buy this item be aware you may have the same issue.

    Smaller than what I expected

The over all install is a pain but once you get the o/d connecter off the rest is a breeze also its smaller than what I expected my hand doesn't wrap around it that well, other than that looks great Oh yeah some instructions in the box would of been nice.
