Review & Install Video

Hey I’m Justin with AmericanMuscle.com and as you can see I have a number of different shift knob options, all from Modern Billet™, fitting the 2011 and newer Mustang, available in your choice of either black or white resin, or satin or chrome Billet aluminum. Modern Billet™ is a company that specializes in making a number of different styling accessories for your Mustang. The first two options the bright chrome option, and the slightly more subtle satin option, work very well on the interiors of 2011 and newer cars, both have been CNC’d from a single block of T6 Billet aluminum, and I can tell you that because of this the knobs will have a good weight to them. The second pair of knobs do have more of a retro vibe going on thanks to the old school black or white appearance, these two have been CNC’d from a single bloc of either black or white resin, which is going to make them slightly different to the Billet aluminum knobs, for one, they’re not going to be nearly as heavy as those aluminum knobs, which some people will like while others like myself prefer a knob with a little more weight to it. On the hand those resin knobs aren’t going to get nearly as hot during the summer months or as cold during the winter months. All 4 shift knob options do come with this shift boot retainer which obviously fills the void left by removing the stock shift knob and holds the stock shift boot into place making for a cleaner appearance. As for the install, can’t get much easier here, remove the stock shift knob first, install that shift boot retainer, then screw the new shift knob into place. Getting everything done should only take you about 15 minutes from start to finish. The shifter is oftentimes considered to be the centerpiece in any interior, so if you’re looking to make a visual statement with your shift then be sure to check out one of these 4 options from Modern Billet™ for your 6 speed, right here at AmericanMuscle.com

Nostalgic Styling. Add the cool vintage styling of the 60's to your modern manual pony with a classic white cue ball style Shift Knob. This shift knob features the 6-speed shift pattern in contrasting black.

High Quality Materials. This retro inspired Shift Knob is CNC Machined from a solid block of white resin compound, not painted! So there is no need to worry about paint flaking off in your hand.

Simple Installation. Just unscrew your old stock shift knob off and screw the new knob on, it's like changing a light bulb. The knob includes a shift boot retainer.

Application. This White Retro Style Shift Knob is designed to fit the 2011-2014 GT and V6 equipped with the MT-82 6-speed manual transmission or Mustangs with a 12mm x 1.25 thread pattern shift handle.

Knob nice, boot retainer spoils appearance

The knob looks nice, really shows up in the black interior of my mustang. The boot retainer however looks like a piece of cheap plastic. Passengers in the car will probably never notice the retainer but I find myself constantly looking down at it trying to figure out a way to improve its' appearance.

    First upgrade

My first upgrade. Couldn't have been easier-installed by simply twisting off the stock knob and then twisting on the boot holder and then the new knob. Amazing that this simple upgrade dramatically changes the look and feel of your shifter. Great bang for your buck!

    Looks good, feels good

Great shifter- it looks great in the interior, and the boot looks solid (not sure what the other reviewers are complaining about). Nice etched numbers. Perhaps more importantly, it feels much better in the hand. You feel more in control of the knob over the stock shifter. Overall, maybe a bit pricey, but a solid buy.

    Great!

I am still alittle confused because for the life of me I cant figure out through pics or internet searches if the nut goes on top of the little shaft thingy lol..other than that its an awesome product!

The nut is actually optional to adjust the height of the knob. It goes on after the plastic piece holding the leather boot and before the knob. Hope that helps!!

    Poor quality boot retainer

Knob portion fit just fine, and no complaints, seemed to be well made and was attractive. My issue is with the adaptor. First off, it is painted (not anodized as advertised) The first one I received was incorrect thread pattern, and stripped during installation with very little effort. Thinking maybe the part was defective, I called American Muscle, where it was suggested I drill it out (a brand new part?) After some discussion I was sent another new kit (in a timely manner) This kit included another new knob (more than I asked for) but suffered the same poor fitment as the first. I just got off the phone, and they are sending me the return slip, and have promised a refund as per my request. No complaints with American Muscle or their service, this is just a less than stellar product. The boot adaptor is the issue, not the knob. If you can get past that, or can bring yourself to take a drill to a brand new part that is supposed to fit, this is the knob for you.

Knob is nice, boot retainer doesn't fit

Had to buy a boot retainer from somewhere else as the one included was too narrow to fit on the shaft of the shifter. The knob is nice, but its slightly smaller than ones offered by other vendors.

    Boot retainer is the problem

The Shifter ball is fine. The boot retainer will not fit an OEM shifter in which the shifter arm below the threads is .500". ID of boot retainer is .482". Some reviews don't mention this, not sure if AM changed vendors. AM sent me out another one when I complained about dinging the powder coat while holding it drilling it out with a 1/2" drill bit. Guess what, sent the same product after describing the problem. at least I can try a stubby metric bolt with vise grips to hold it this time while I drill. This problem turns a 5 minute job into more than a half hour. AM really should step up to the plate and stop sending these out the door until their product is right.

    Confused

I bought this and thought it was going to work great, however the shift knob works fine, it screws on but the part below that connects the shift boot and the knob will not screw on all the way to allow me to screw on the ball on to the shifter. AM even sent me out a new one the next day but it will not fit for some reason.....it said it fits 2014 GT manual transmission but it will not work.

Sadly, it sounds like you must have received a defective retainer if the other didn't fit either. It definitely is supposed to fit your 2014 GT. Give our customer service a call when you have a second - they should be able to get another shipped out that won't cause you any additional trouble.

    Wrong threads

I don't know if it was just this knob, but the threads on the ball were incorrect! The sleeve worked fine, but the ball wouldn't screw on! It's a good looking ball and I would have loved to be able to use it.

The shift knob is too small to fit your hand comfortably and the boot retainer does not fit good at the bottom of knob. I wouldn't recommend this shift knob but customer support was great in refunding payment.

    Needed a little help

I like the shifter look and feel. Installation required a little re-engineering. I've read where the base model shifter boot doesn't fit some shifters. Well, it doesn't seem to work with this one either. I had to drill out the center of the sleeve in order to get it low enough on the shaft, so the handle could be installed. The top of the boot doesn't really stay up and connected to the sleeve. Sometimes it slides down. I will get some two sided tape to correct that.

If you are still experiencing the shifter boot falling down, I'd like to recommend trying the shift boot retainer: http://www.americanmuscle.com/shift-boot-retainer-0509.html, which should keep your boot in place. Hope this helps!

    Shift Knob

Shipping was quick, cue ball looks awesome on the inside, plus it matches the white dice I got on the rear view mirror which is just a bonus. The only thing I would say is that I wish it had the black racing stripes that trailed up and down the numbers, otherwise its a great product it feels good in your hand when you shift

    Great quality. Great functionality.

This is very well made. A little pricy but you get what you pay for. Fits perfectly on my 2012 GT. I found the original shift knob clunky and a little hard to manage with the right gears on the 6 speed transmission. This knob is just the right size. Much easier to find the gears. And it looks great.
