Hey, guys. Today, we're gonna be taking a look at and installing a shift boot retainer for 2011 to 2014 Mustangs, except for the GT500. So you're gonna want to be checking this shift boot retainer out if you guys just bought an aftermarket shift knob that didn't come with a new retainer, or you're just looking to replace your current shift boot retainer. So the shift boot retainer basically holds up your shift boot and makes a nice, clean, finished connection between the shift boot and an aftermarket shift knob. This one's made of billet aluminum. It's anodized black, and it costs about $20. It's very easy to get installed. I'll call it a one out of three wrenches on the difficulty meter, and we'll show you how we got it on the car now. All right, guys. To start the install of your new shift boot retainer, you're gonna have to remove your stock shift knob, and you're obviously gonna be pairing this with an aftermarket shift knob. So in order to do that, we're gonna go ahead and pull up on the plastic bezel here that's holding our shift knob in place. From here, we're gonna unscrew our factory shift knob. There we go. So from here, we're gonna separate our factory shift knob from the shift boot, and this just pulls out. We'll just work the shift knob out. We are going to grab our new shift boot retainer, and it actually is gonna sit like this. And we're gonna work this into our shift boot. Once this is popped into place, you can go ahead and get your shift boot back on the car. This'll work with any 12 by 1.25 shifter handle and shift knob, so it really leaves you with a wide variety. So I'm actually gonna leave this like this for now, because we will need to make some adjustment here because the bottom of our shift boot retainer needs to meet the bottom of the shift knob. So I'm gonna leave everything loose for now, kinda sitting here like this. I'm gonna grab the shift knob and go ahead and get that in place too. I'm gonna leave it a little off-center, because what I'm gonna do is I'm gonna raise the retainer up to meet the bottom of the shift knob. So we're gonna keep going up with our retainer until it makes contact with the bottom of our shift knob. There we go. And then from here, we're just going to finish tightening up the shift knob to get it straight. All right. And then once it's straight, we will get our bezel back down into place. And if your shift boot rotated, you guys can always move it on your retainer here to make it straight and look nice. All right, guys. That's gonna wrap up this review and install. Keep in mind that you can always check this retainer out more online. I'm Stephanie. And for all things Mustang, keep it right here at americanmuscle.com.

This retainer fit perfect and was high quality. The threads were a bit damaged on my existing shift arm. But the retainer was solid enough that I was able to use it to thread past the damage and repair the shifter threads. Took about 5 minutes to install. I used a heavy zip tie to secure the new leather boot to the retainer, instead of the original rubber o-ring. It was far easier!Helpful (0)

Will this fit a hurst short shifter? I drive a 08 GT
Hi,This Shift Boot Retainer will not work with the Hurst shifters because of the handle shape this retainer is good with a stock handle or a aftermarket handle that is cylinder shaped not flat like the hurst shifters.
Will this work with a MGW Shifter?
how do you stretch that over the boot ?
The boot should fit snugly around the first part of the retainer, and may require some adjustment to install properly.
WILL THIS WORK ON A T56 TRANSMISSION?
As long as your Mustang is 2005-2014 and has a manual transmission with a 12mm x 1.25 thread pattern shift handle, for the exception of the GT500, this will fit.
Will this make my shift knob be a little more taller to be able to shift better?
These will raise the shift knob just a tad but nothing that is going to be very noticeable.
Yes, this retainer will work with the factory knob and will fit with any knob with a 12mm x 1.25 thread pitch.
As long as your Mustang is an 05-14, and the shifter came from the Ford factory while manufacturing the vehicle, then this will fit no problem.
The Shift Boot Retainer (05-14 All, Excluding 11-14 GT500) will work with the Rally Stripe 6-Speed Shift Knob- Black/Red (11-14 GT, V6) item number 389086.
