Review & Installation Video

Review & Install Video

I’m Justin with and this is our breakdown of BBK’s Long tube ceramic headers for the 2005-2010 Mustang GT. Long tubes completely replace those ultra restrictive cast iron manifolds, which can really choke out the flow of exhaust. Adding a set of long tubes along with an aftermarket mid pipe and exhaust will make for a really free flowing setup that will free up some extra horsepower and torque. These headers from BBK are going to be pretty much middle of the road in terms of average price, figuring you have a company like PaceSetter on the lower side of things, and companies like JBA and Cook’s on the higher side of the spectrum. However, one of the things that will separate these headers from BBK from the competition is the ceramic coating. That ceramic coating will offer a couple of different benefits, first is performance, ceramic coatings dissipate heat a lot better than a stainless header, which will make for a slight performance edge, and will help keep the engine bay a little bit cooler as well, which is always a good thing. Second, these headers will offer a little bit more durability and longevity than a chrome plated header or a stainless header. The final benefit is going to be appearance. I know it’s not all that important since these headers aren’t completely visible from the engine bay, however that ceramic coating is going to keep that nice bright silver color throughout their life whereas a chrome or stainless header tends to change color as they heat cycle, which some people like, others may not. Another thing, this ceramic coating is going to be a lot easier to keep clean as well. Taking a closer look at the headers themselves, you’ll notice pretty good welds down here at the collector, as well as pre welded O2 sensor bungs. The headers also feature 1 and 5/8” mandrel bent tubing, which should really help that exhaust flow. Finally, you’ll notice this laser cut flanges for an OEM type fit, which won’t allow any leaking. Installing any set of long tube headers can be a little intense, so if you don’t think you have the mechanical know how to get this job done, then you might want to leave this one up to the shop. However if you are going to tackle the job, you’ll be happy to know that these headers do include all the hardware and necessary gaskets, but just leave yourself a full day, just to be safe. Keep in mind whenever you run a set of long tube headers like these BBKs, you will need to address your mid pipe. In this case, you will need to run a flanged end shorty mid pipe, just to get everything bolted up properly. BBK recommends running their shorty X-pipe, just for the best fitment, and for the best performance gains. So if you’re looking for a set of headers at a very fair price, that will offer all the performance of a set of long tubes, plus the added benefits of a ceramic coating, then these headers from BBK are definitely worth checking out.

More Horsepower and Torque.   Improve the performance of your S197 Mustang with a set of BBK Long Tube Headers. These BBK ceramic coated headers will greatly improve your mustangs exhaust flow over the restrictive factory manifolds and increase your Pony's horsepower and torque. Increases of 14 to 22 RWHP have been seen when installed with a BBK shorty X pipe.

Silver Ceramic Coating. These Long Tube Headers are completed in BBK's Polished Silver Ceramic Coating that not only looks great, but reduce under hood temperatures to help increase horsepower and extend the life of the headers. Ceramic Coated headers will long out last both chrome plated and polished headers.

Quality Construction.   BBK Long Tube Exhaust headers are manufactured from 1 5/8" CNC mandrel bent tubing for unrestricted airflow. And feature one piece laser cut 3/8" header flanges for added strength, leak-free performance and OEM fit. These headers are then completed in a polished ceramic finish for good looks and to lower under hood temperatures.

Recommended Upgrade. To realize the full power potential that these Long Tube Headers have to offer, AmericanMuscle recommends a Bama custom tune with a Mustang Handheld Tuner to reprogram the vehicles computer (ECU) for proper operation.

Application. These Ceramic Long Tube Headers are designed to fit the manual and automatic transmissions 2005-2010 GT Mustangs. BBK long tube headers require a flanged end shorty midpipe in order to function properly. BBK recommends using a BBK shorty X-Pipe for the best performance gains (see drop down option above).

Technical notes. Not legal for use on pollution controlled motor vehicles; intended for off road use only. A BBK shorty Mid Pipe are required for installation.

Over Axle Pipe Unfortunately my first upgrade was just the axle back no piping up to the cats. I just ordered the Long tube headers and Catted shortys. I guess this will connect to my stock over axle piping connecting to my flowmasters. Will this stock piping negate the effects of the headers? Where can I order the over axle piping?

  • I put BBK long tube headers and catted X pipe on my car as well. The catted X pipe bolted directly to the existing exhaust so no additional changes were needed.

So I'll be heading back home in a week from deployment. And I plan on getting the BBK long tube headers with the off-road X pipes on my 08 BULLITT as soon a I get home. (for installment purposes) Do I NEED to get aftermarket cat-backs//axle-back or is it fine like that?

  • You will not need an aftermarket axle-back or cat-back exhaust. I would recommend you purchase a matching BBK mid-pipe for proper fitment.

If i purchase LT headers with catted shorty x pipe will my 07 gt pass emission test will my check engine light turn on. looking at BBK Ceramic LT and catted shorty x

  • The BBK Ceramic Long Tube Headers with catted shorty mid pipe Will not set any engine codes. For passing emissions, you will need to consult with a local emissions inspector for your specific emissions laws and regulations.

I have a 06 mustang gt with a pypes cut and clamp xpipe and will I have fitment issues when installing bbk long tube headers on a lowered car

  • Hey Big Riff, Yes you will experience fitment issues if you try to install these long tubes with that x-pipe. Long tubes and mid pipes must be brand specific when it comes to fitment. anything not brand matching most likely won't fit without large amounts of custom work.

Do the long tube headers come as set or do I have to buy them separate?

  • These are sold as a set.

Will these headers scrape on the ground when entering or exiting a sloped drive way or entry way on a stock suspention

  • If you are driving on a stock suspension, it will depend on the degree of the slope of the driveway. These will not scrape unless the driveway you are entering/exiting is aggressively sloped.

I had these installed which was about $500 with the BBK catted X pipe and a custom Bama tune. These sound perfect, nice and loud when you get on it and quiet and normal cruising speeds. Idle is great not to loud but you can tell its not stock but when you touch the gas the sound comes alive, have not gotten on it yet as you want let these heat cycle a few times or it may turn your check engine light on. But these are awesome my car sounds great and can already tell there is more power and low end torque. My headers failed to come with all the hardware and American Muscle as they always do took care of me and reimbursed me for the gaskets and hardware.

    It's a beast

Took it to a shop to have the BBK long tube header, BBK cat sorty x pype, SR lowering springs with 19" wheel kit from AM, SR panhard bar installed and needing to re-balance the wheels after lowering it with a total of $720. End result it sounds and looks like a beast!

    worth the time

decided to get these after researching, install wasn't too bad, I work at a ford dealer and used my day off to install headers and catted x pipe, cyl 3 upper manifold stud will have to be cut down 4 threads on the supplied studs, too long to get in, other than that no complaints, sounds insane with no mufflers, volume is way to loud, but that's fine with me, can feel a difference around 4000-6000 rpm

Excellent Mod to improve your stangs performance

I recently installed these BBK headers with the catted shorty X on my 08 Shelby GT. I am very pleased with the quality and the end results. Overall installation time was about 6 hrs, no help, using a lift, definitely wouldn’t do it without one, but it could be done. I have plenty of mechanical exp. and used the customer submitted installation guide for reference only, I found that guide to be way more helpful/informative than the one BBK provided. I did run into the same thing that others have with one of the bolts not fitting in the hole due to the primary being to close, (passenger side upper bolt on the #6 cylinder in the firing order). I used a dremel and cut just enough off to allow it to fit and the problem was solved. This should be addressed by BBK with a shorter bolt for that specific hole. Also had to bend the catted X exhaust hangers down some because in mid 08 Ford stopped putting the hanger brackets on due to high NVH, previous years had a TSB. They would have contacted the transmission cross member with engine flex and caused a vibration if not bent or removed. There is added power just can’t tell you how much until I get it on the Dyno, I’ll update the review when I do get numbers. The sound is good, a little raspy for my taste but that can be changed with a different cat back later on, currently I have the FRPP M-5230-GTA’s that came stock on the Shelby GT. I also used the Bama 93 octane tune without issue, but a custom Dyno tune will get the full potential out of all the mods. Rest of mods include: FRPP hot rod cams; FRPP High rise intake; BBK 62mm TB; FRPP CAI. Overall I would recommend this product and American Muscle to others. Shipping was less than 24 hours from PA-VA, Thank you AM for great products, service, and prices.

Great Product, Need to Know This Though

This, along with the BBK Catted X Pipe have been a great addition to my 06 GT. However, I believe the product description may not tell all. The headers are "not required to have a tune," but I believe a tune is MANDATORY if you want your vehicle to run properly. After installation, my car was idle surging and not running very well. Once the temperature dropped into the thirties, it would not start. This is because it was running lean. Fuel air mixture was way off with the new placement of the O2 sensors (relocated up to 4 feet down the line). The car would belch out white smoke and, if lucky, would start eventually. Power was marginal. It had actually seemed that I had LOST power that the car had before. This was all corrected by the SCT BAMA tuner, which I purchased immediately after. Not until the tune was the real performance advantage finally realized, and I love it. I run the catted X with SLP Loudmouth axle-backs. Perhaps this was particular to my vehicle, as the folks at BBK said they had run this product on factory stock-tuned 2013 Mustangs with no problem. I installed this setup on my own in about 9 hours. If I had to do it again, I'm confident I could do it in six. It will be necessary to dismount the two rear engine mounts and use a jackstand to support the engine. Otherwise, you cannot maneuver the header into place. Strongly recommend a vehicle lift. New header bolts are provided, I used them where studs came out, but mostly reused factory studs. The collectors on both headers came in dented by a piece of wire that was used to hold the flange secure, but AM took care of me on this, so no complaints there.

awesome product, awesome outcome, a "MUST" upgrade

These long tube bbk ceramic headers were delivered promptly and they are gorgeous out of the box and look even better on my 'stang. performance is extremely noticeable and so is the sound specially with the bbk catted x pipe, it really purrs now and sounds utterly amazing. I'd recommend this to anyone. beware however it took me two whole days and i had a HORRIBLE vibration after the install but cost me 40 dollars to fix the hangers on the x-pipe had to be adjusted as they were touching part of my frame which was causing the vibration other than that AWESOME PRODUCT

    BBK Long Tube Headers

I installed these myself, not that difficult of a project. The only issue is the next to last stud on top of passenger side needs to be shortened and be the only stud in place when mounting header. Everything else went just like the instructions explained. Great Sound and Performance.

I used them with the BBK catted X-Pipe along with a Borla exhaust! Love it!! Just make sure you get a tuner to avoid kicking the check engine light as well as to boost the gas mileage!

    Well worth it.

I bought these headers for my 2007 Mustang GT; I thought it needed a more aggressive tone. Coupled with a BBK O/R X and SLP Loudmouths, these headers have made my car INSANELY loud, not to mention ridiculously aggressive. Great product at a great price. No complaints here, thanks AM.

These are just amazing. I installed them with a BBK shorty x-pipe and magnaflow magnapack catback exhaust. The install was easy. They dont look like the picture and dont have the exhaust returns on them. The power difference is definitely noticeable and the car now sounds amazing!!! I would recommend to anyone looking for a great sound and a great power gain.

    2010 Headers

Just did the install on a 2010 gt. Did all the work myself and was not too bad just very tight if you do not have a car lift. Would say basic set of tools would not be a good idea for self install and motor must be raised and motor mounts come out to make it possible but other than that the product is amazing and sound is amazing along with catted "x". Do not recommend running this set up with SLP Loudmouths you will get a lot of exhaust pop when you let off the throttle but all in all i was happy.

    Big Improvement

Finally had them installed, couple of things. When i opened the package, the headers were damaged at the flange side, bent in, during shipment i suppose, but that was repaired at the shop. The sound is awesome, however, when i kick the a/c on, and when the clutch engages on the compressor, i can hear a minor whistling sound inside the cab, Not sure the cause of it. Great product tho. I bought these along with off-road x-pipes, and also has a tune to it. Loving it, Thanks again AM, coming back for some more later.
