Quad shocks on rear for 10x17 rear tires and wheels I have removed the rear quad shocks (stablizier shocks) to make room for a larger set of wheels and tires. I'd like to replace them with some that fit. My conflict is minimal (1/2" tops) and I am wondering if these shocks would do the trick. My specific questions are: Can these shocks be mounted up side down without any loss of performance? (long term leakage) Has anyone done what I am trying to do with these shocks? If the answer above is no, is there a pair of quad shocks that do work for what I am trying to do? Thank you.

SgtKK

  • I'm not sure what you are trying to say about (1/2") tops being a conflict. I have nitto 315/35/17 on the rear of my 94 GT and I installed these bilstein quad shocks and they fit and work with no problems for over 6 months now. The only thing I had to do was reverse the way they go in compared to the old oem shocks which means I had to install them with shinny chrome piston towards the rear because the outer yellow tube body was to wide and would interfere with my wheels.

I know I can replace the rear shocks on my 01 Stang without removing the wheels but can I replace the Quad shock W/o removing the wheels?

tdtree

  • You can, but it is much easier to perform the job when the car is up on jack stands and the wheels are removed.

Flipping Shock Are there any issues with flipping the quad shock (if you have to) for wheel clearance?

USAF

  • I don't believe you would have any issues flipping the quad shock, I've seen many do it to make room for bigger ewheels and tires. The real question in my mind is, do you need it at all? If you have upgraded control arms, you may not.

Is there any benefit to running quad shocks once the rear factory stamped control arms have been replaced with both upper and lower tubulars? Many say at that point to ditch the quad shocks all together but I was wondering if there was yet still more of an advantage to run both.

Brian

  • I mean having all that suspension done and also adding the Bilstein Quad Shock (86-04 GT, V6, Mach 1; 94-98 Cobra) definitely wouldn't hurt, however, rear control arms are most certainly an apt substitute for deleted quad shocks.

    Great Quad shocks

Easy to install, only have to remove rear wheels to get acces to shocks. After, just 2 bolts to remove. Seemed pricey at first, but Ford dealer here in Canada was selling oe at 210$ each... I saw a big difference, the rear is much more solid, but I also changed rear shocks and front struts at the same time.

    Find the right bolt!

OK, I'll admit it. On the forward end of the shock, the bolt is on the INSIDE. It took me awhile to realize this, much to my chagrin. Once that was sorted out, installation was a snap. Be sure the spring is not compressed, as the Bilsteins are very stiff. The old, OEM set had no compression at all, so driving is a lot more fun now!

    2003 Mach 1 Mustang

These improved the ride quality immensely. The Mach 1 comes with a decent suspension, but if you plan on driving it heavily or upgrading other parts of the suspension, you need these. Easy to install and great improvement.

    Best Quad Shock Choice

My quad shocks were done for on my Mustang, so I replaced it with these. It definitely helped with handling and wheel hop. Before, it would hop, but now it's significantly reduced or eliminated completely, depending on scenario. Also, these will clear 315 tires without any issues.

    Noticeable improvement

When I removed my old quad shocks, they were toast and stayed compressed. After installing these, I've noticed less wheelhop and the rear end of the car feels more controlled while going over uneven surfaces. Bilsteins are worth the money over the cheapo auto parts store ones. Great purchase!

    Bilstein Quad Shock

I jacked up the rear end, removed tires, used impact and WD40 to remove old factory quads, installed new Bilstein quads, torqued nuts and bolts, put on wheels and torqued lug nuts. It took about an hour in my home garage. They where a perfect fit. These shocks have much more dampening power than any of the other brands I checked out and that is what you are looking for in a quad shock. My GT has a little clutch chatter and I can now take off from an uphill stop light without an embarrassing shudder. The GT is much more fun to drive with a solid feeling drive train and fun is what a Stang is all about, right.

Bilstein Quad Shock / 87 Mustang Lx 5.0

Excellent ride quality, and handling. To fit you will have to compress them a bit, easier to install when removing rear shock. (I changed both at the same time) first time changing out shocks took about an hour with basic tool box and floor Jack . Bang for Buck, 5 out of 5 . Overall American Muscle is the way to go for quality products!!

    Much better wheel hop control

I bought this initially to fit wider wheels/tires in hopes that it was more compact than the OEM design. For anyone wondering, yes it is smaller in size and you can fit a wider tire than you can with the OEM shock. The bonus was that wheel hope is 0 now where as before I would get massive wheel hop on uneven surfaces. Obviously Bilstein is the best of the best in suspension anyway so its no surprise its a great product.

    Hard driven 2001 Mustang GT

The previous owner of my 2001 put some hard miles on this mustang. After installing the SR Performance Complete Rear Control Arm Kit and Bilstein Quad Shocks, the rear finally felt like it should...tight and predictable! Don't think the old quads were doing anything. Definitely tighter tied-together rear end. Just ordered front LCAs and SR Performance Front Struts.

    rear end rebuild

Great product. I noticed the difference right away. This was not a easy install as I do not have a strut compressor but some good old muscle and a few words of encouragement that can not be posted and I was able to get these guys installed. You will need to reuse your old hard ware or go pick up some new stuff as these units do not come with it. This is not a cheap part but if you can move your shocks by hand then it is time to replace them and these are great quality. You will need to pull the rear tires to get access to the nuts and bolts. The front bolt comes out towards the diff case the nut you see is actual welded to the frame on the 86 so don't try to break it free.
