Review & Installation Video

Hey I’m Justin with AmericanMuscle.com, and I have with me the Pypes Mid Muffler Cat-Back exhaust system fitting all 2005-2010 Mustang GTs. The biggest benefit of going with a mid muffler setup is the elimination of any possible drone, which can be especially problematic on automatic cars. This is made possible thanks to the muffler location and the longer tailpipes. Taking a closer look at the Cat-Back itself you’ll notice right away it’s very similar to Pypes’ Pype Bomb Cat-Back exhaust – both systems use the M80 muffler, and both systems also use 2.5” mandrel bent stainless steel tubing throughout. Where the kits differ is the tips – where the Pype Bomb uses those massive 4” megaphone style resonated tips, this kit uses a more traditional style 4” tip. Because of all this you can still expect a very aggressive exhaust note out of the system. Installation of this new Cat-Back really shouldn’t be all that bad, removing the factory setup first and then getting this Pypes Cat-Back bolted on should take you about 2 hours from start to finish. Now let’s hear how the Pypes Mid Muffler Cat-Back exhaust sounds compared to our factory exhaust.

Increase in Performance and Sound. Bolting on a Pypes Mid Muffler Cat-Back to a stock 2005 to 2010 GT will yield an instant 5 to 10 horsepower gain. It features two of Pypes M-80 Bullet Mufflers for the ultimate in flow and power gains and a deeper throaty tone.

Aggressive Throaty Sound. The Pypes Mid Muffler Cat-Back features two high flow straight-through M-80 Bullet Mufflers that are mounted directly after the Mid Pipe to produce the aggressive deep throaty muscle car tone of yesteryear.

Quality Materials. This Pypes Cat-Back Exhaust system is constructed from free flowing mandrel bent 2.5" 409 Stainless Steel tubing and features two Pypes M-80 Bullet straight-through mufflers for an aggressive throaty sound. The whole system is finished off with a set of 4" Polished 304 Stainless Steel tips for modern Muscle Car styling.

Application. The Pypes Mid Muffler Cat-Back Exhaust kit is specifically designed to simply bolt-on to the existing factory H-Pipe of the 2005 to 2010 4.6L GT or Bullitt Mustang for more power and a louder more aggressive sound.

Technical Note: Americanmuscle recommends adding the 2005+ Mustang 304 Stainless Steel Exhaust Hanger Kit from the drop down option above, to provide more strength, stability and a cleaner installed appearance. If you have a 2007 Mustang you may need the kit for correct installation.

WIl this line fit my 05 V6? I have the pypes mid muffler true dual exhaust X pipe already, and im wondering if this line will fit my V6

JoeyD

  • If you already have the Pypes Mid-Muffler True Dual Exhaust with X-pipe, you don't need to purchase this kit. It is the exact same system only without the X-pipe. Only difference between the (2) is how they bolt up and the V6 system includes the required X-pipe for the conversion. Hope this helps!

2008 Mustang V6? I want to put long tube headers with a short catted H-pipe on my 08 v6. Will this cat back work?

Jelly

  • Yes. The h-pipe should match right up to this.

05 V6 With Ford Racing Duel Exhaust I just bought an 05 V6 with a Ford Racing Duel exhaust but i don't like that it has a chamber muffler and want to switch to a mid muffler system. Would this connect right to the X-pipe that came with the Ford Racing exhaust or would i need the Pypes X-pipe as well?

Rmatter

  • The Pypes Mid-Muffler Cat-Back Exhaust (05-10 GT) may be able to mate up with the X-Pipe that comes with the Ford Performance True Dual Exhaust (05-09 V6) item #24087 (www.americanmuscle.com/ford-v6dualexhaust-0509.html) because the piping of both are 2.5" however there may need to be custom modifications made to properly connect the pieces.

At first i was afraid it would be too loud for me to be comfortable with do to the M-80 strait-through mufflers but when i turned the key it was more of a deeper tone and more throaty... it still is quite a bit louder because my friends could hear me perfectly when i was about 2 blocks away... but definitely not too loud... perfect in my opinion, definitely worth every penny

    More power than I expected!

I paid a shop to install the system for me. This fit was a little odd and we had to do some tweaking of the pipes to get everything lined up just right. The install drama was quickly forgiven when I started the Pony up for the first time while still in the garage. The sound was incredible, mellow smooth and loud. I get a bit of a drone at about 2000 RPM. At 3300 RPM the car sounds its best, argressive, mellow and loud. I really turn at around 4000 RPM. The 4.0 had a Steeda CAI ordered from here, and now the Pypes mid-muffler kit with the XFM44 X pipe. I can feel the extra power over just having the CAI. The Dual pipes seemed to make the CAI work even better. The throttle response is greatly improved. The driving feels more effortless. I found I can get the tires to chirp in second gear now when I really get on it. For V6 owners you will need to add the XFM44 X Pipe, a set of muffler hangers and one band clamp (like the one you have at the stock Y, which you will reuse). I chose to have my mid pipes welded to my X pipe to eliminate the bands altogether.

    easy install, great sound, affordable

Install only took about 30 minutes on my manual 08 gt. Not counting the hour it took to get the stock exhaust off, WD40 is your best friend here. After having it on for a month here's my feedback; the sound is amazing, super quite for DD and loud and throaty under hard acceleration. Driverside fitment is holding strong but the passenger side seems to sagging about a half inch, need to get it fixed, but for about 400$ less then other competetive exhauts its a small price to pay. Thanks AM! Ill be back for more due to the great prices and fast shipping!

    CLOSE, BUT NOT QUITE

This system sounds pretty good once you get it on and adjusted. Fairly quiet at idle, but wakes up when you get on the gas. It took a lot of tweeking and adjusting to make it fit. The right side hung low and the left side was tight to the exhaust cut out in the bumper. After some tweeking and bending of the hangers it did fit, although it was too close to my driveshaft (I have a one piece, 4" aluminum driveshaft). After a week I have taken this system off and replaced it with the ROUSH Extreme system, which fit like a glove and sounds AWSOME

    Awesome sound

This is a great sounding setup for the S197, and it eliminates the dreaded drone between the 1500-2000 RPM range that is infamous with this car. I highly recommend taking this system to a good exhaust person as it will not fit worth a darn. The expert installers need to cut, modify, and mold this kit to work on your car. Ditch the band clamps and allow the expert to weld all fittings. Now the setup is perfect! I would do it all over again. No rattles and the system is solid. Even my tips are perfectly positioned and not sticking out to far, as others who chose the bolt in method have complained about. CUSTOM WELD IT IN or you will not be satisfied! It also seems to get louder after the first 1,000 miles, but I still want it louder. I will see how the long tube headers increase the sound in the near future.

    Nice Catback for the Price

My dad and I installed this from about 2pm to 8pm and that had to be the hardest part. Like others have said, the actual install was alright, it was just the fine tuning of the pipes to make sure they were even out the back end and that they weren't rubbing up against the gas tank. That part of it was very, very tedious and frustrating, but we managed to get the both of them looking good without any major problems and they do sound great. It isn't quite as loud as I would like them, but for $420 I can't complain. I went without the x-pipe for now but plan to buy it after I can raise some more money (I'm only 16 and money is scarce).

    Bang For Your Buck !!!

This is my 4th and last exhaust system. I had the axle back flow masters and ford racing kits. I also had the cervini's side exhaust kit. This Pypes Mid-Muffler Catback setup is by far the best exhaust system I have had for my 06 GT. I should of bought this system to begin with. This is the best stang bang for your buck. I ordered this on a Friday and received it on a Tuesday. Got it installed Wednesday at a professional muffler shop. They charged me $100.00. With installation fee's, this system is cheaper than most catback system's and well worth the money. You can't go wrong with this product. Thank's Pypes and American Muscle.

    good for a V6 conversion

I moved from a flowmaster to this mid muffler set up and i am very pleased that i did. The install wasnt too difficult, the fitment sucks however, but many reviews will tell you that. Once i started the car up it sounded just liked my broken in flowmaster so i wasnt too pleased, but after 1 month of driving with it and having a shop weld it in it sounds a lot better! has a nice idle sound that runbles quite a bit, there is less cabin drone at highway speeds than with my american thinder flowmaster, and when you punch it down it gives out a pretty loud blast. I though about adding an axleback to it but i dont think it is needed. in the end, if you are looking for a true duel set up, this one is very good for the money. It would be about the same as the v6 conversion kit from pypes so i suppose it just comes down to weather you want a mid muffler or just axle backs...My vote was for the mid muffler and add an axle back if needed.

    best bang for your buck

i combined this system with a set of bbk equal length shorty headers and an off road h-pipe. it sounds very good, and fairly deep. but the only down side(which really isn't a downside in my opinion) is that it is very loud with my combination. the installation was very simple and straight forward. its is very much worth the money.

    nice rumble

This exhaust has a nice rumble. There is no highway drone but a nice roar when you hit the gas. Nice horsepower increase too. I got the after-cat x-pipe and got about 22 more horses. This system is bangin!!!!!!

    Awesome exhaust

I bought this exhaust a little bit after it came out on American Muscle. It sounds amazing, I have a set of SLP headers and an SLP xpipe. This is my 3rd exhaust setup Ive tried and Im sticking with it, absolutely love it. I highly suggest this exhaust. It doesnt have a highway drone as some other exhausts. Its PERFECT :)

    EASY BOLT ON

Great product, easy bolt-on installation, great sound. You can really notice the power gains. Just remember not to tighten any bolts leave everything loose until your good with the fitment. The only problem I had was with the tips the right one was lower than the left by a little less than an inch, but that's an easy fix at your local shop. Not the greatest system on the market but you can't beat the price!

    Easy and tame

Installed the system with my JBA headers. It sounds pretty... It could actually be a little bit louder, but It's nice to not have to crank the radio to hear it. Downside, my driver side didn't have the right fitment and I had to take it somewhere to get the rear driver side aligned and get the muffler away from the gas tank. :) I don't know if it was shipping, but that side was a BE-ATCH to get right.
