Description
Prop Rod? Are you still using that old style factory prop rod that Ford installed in your S197 Mustang? Well then join the new millennium with a set of Modern Muscle Design Hood Struts from AmericanMuscle for clean modern looks and convenience. Style And Strength. Designed to get rid of that old ugly prop rod, this set of two powerful yet sleek MMD gas struts not only makes opening your Pony's hood much easier, but also holds it securely in place. Made from lightweight steel and aluminum, they have a chrome and nickel plated finish to give your engine bay a much cleaner appearance.

No Drilling Required. The stamped steel brackets included in this MMD kit are designed to bolt into the existing mounting holes in the hood so there is no drilling required for installation. Struts can be installed on factory hoods as well as aftermarket hoods that use the factory bolt location. If your aftermarket hood is lighter than the factory hood, use caution when opening the hood due to the power of the strut.

Application. This Modern Muscle Design Hood Strut Kit is specifically designed for use on the 2005 to 2009 Ford Mustangs, including the V6, GT, Bullitt, and Shelby models. The Kit includes two chrome gas powered struts, mounting brackets, and all the required mounting hardware.

Will these struts work with the Cervini's Concept Hood. I have a set of struts now that caused my hood to bow in the middle. I was told this was because the struts were too strong. The struts were removed and the hood is back to normal (no more bowing).

  • well considering the fact that the cervins hood should bolt up to the stock mounts, there should be no problem... however.. there may be some trimming to do...depends on the shape of the hood...i would call cervins, to see if they ever mounted them...

    Hardware wasn't the greatest

    July 29, 2013

Overall the setup was pretty good. The big problem I found was the hardware for the install. The lower tabs did not fit snug against the fender and had big problem with installing the struts. The lock tab would not come off easily and bent when pressed on. A pair of pliers was used to try to "pop them on" (according to the instructions), and all that did was mess up the ball ends. I ended up removing them all together. There was nothing in the instructions stating requiring lock tab removal in order to install them.

    Nice touch

    March 30, 2013

Another killer AM product and nice add to any S197. The install is easy, but I do recommend that you have a friend help you. When you take the hood henge bolts out, the hood will want to slide back towards your windsheild. Having somebody hold the hood in place while you install the MMD strut bracket will make it much easier. The instructions are OK, but not great. They don't tell you about the retaining clip. My old set of struts just simple popped on. Because the instructions didn't mention anything else, I tried to pop these on, and quickly learned that you need to remove the retaining clip first. Then they will pop right on, and you slide the retaining clip back on. Very easy once you take a close look at it. I recommend taking one retaining clip out of one of your struts on a workbench, then put it right back so you don't lose it. You'll then see how it works. Just becareful not to drop the clip when you install the struts. The clips are small. The only bad things about this kit is that it came with dull boring bolts (to replace the factory ugly bolts. I tossed those in the trash and purchased alen head chrome bolts, which look killer and really complete the kit. Chrome bolts are not cheap, $18. for two bolts and two chrome washers. Last, these struts were a little noisy when openning and closing, making some squeaking sounds. A little silicone lub will fix that. All in all, another great product by AM!

Looks good, tricky to do by yourself

    March 18, 2013

The struts look good & hold the hood somewhat higher than the factory prop rod. The instal was a bit tricky to do by myself; and extra set of hands would have been nice. You definitely need to pull out the little pins to seat the balls into the sockets, then slide the pins back in.

    Yes, they work....

    March 12, 2013

Pros: Packaging is great Yes this product works…BUT Cons: I opted for chrome finish, wish I didn’t, as chrome plating it not very good. I will paint the brackets with body color for an OEM look. Instructions are terrible, not that they are really need, it’s a simple install. The printed photos leave much to be desired, in the age of digital photography; it would seem the manufacturer would make a better effort! DO NOT try to “pop on” the ball connectors; simply remove the snap lock, on the struts, and the ball joints fit without effort! DO install the struts to the mounting hardware, before installing the mounting brackets, makes the job much easier As other posters have mentioned, the inner fender bracket mounting hole does NOT align…you would think American Muscle would have advised the manufacturer, after other poster comments?

    Great Product

    March 02, 2013

I bought these hood struts to replace some hood struts that were worn out and damaged on my Shelby GT500. These struts are great, but the instructions don't tell it all. You definitely have to take out the small pins that clip account the ball ends on each end of the strut in order to put these on. I don't know how you pop them on' because I am 6-4 and over 300lbs and I didn't feel comfortable forcing these things on, because this is going on the hood and if something gets damages, then I wouldn't be able to go into work on Monday and I am not trying to replace a hood or damage what I just bought! It is worth the extra time to takeout the pins, put the balls on the sockets one at a time, and put the pins back in and take the time to make sure everything is lined up properly. Also, it would help to have a buddy over, because I found that when you loosen the hood, it can quickly get out of alignment as you try to squeeze the upper brackets in place, and it is a devil of a deal to hold the hood and shift it so the screw can get in the hole again. ' still great product and the issues in the install are worth the results in the end!

    Hood strut kit

    December 15, 2012

Product is good, installation for my tastes had to be modified some to have the brackets installed on the fenders set flat by long gating the holes about 1/8 of a inch. After that the product is great, NO more prop rod.

MMD Bolt On Hood Strut Kit - Chrome (05-09 All)

    May 21, 2012

I installed this on my 2006 GT. Its a 15 minute installation. You need a spare pair of hands. Before removing the two bolts have someone hold/squeeze the bracket to the hood with their hands to keep the holes aligned. This allows for a quick tread when you replace the bolts.

    Looks great, good fit

    April 27, 2012

A very easy install,no instructions, but, straight forward. Brackets marked "U"= upper (ie.UD=upper driver) and for "L" lower, ect. Mount the lowers first, "USE the fender bolt closer to the firewall" !! For the hood work "ONLY" one side at a time remove the front bolt and loosen the rear bolt "ONLY" enough to slide the upper bracket in place align using the front bolt tighten both. Do similar on the opposite side. Attach the lifts, lower end first, snap clip rings need to be inserted in pilot the hole they only go one way. Use care when attaching the upper piston end as the prop rod will need to be lowered as the fit is made, you may need help!! Remember to attach the clip described above before attempting to lower the hood, one side at a TIME!! Test the fit, then remove the prop rod. Enjoy!!
