      Jake: Jake here for American Muscle. And today I'm taking a look at this J&L 3.0 oil separator for the 2011 and newer 6.4 liter HEMI Chargers. If you're in it for the long haul with your Charger, especially if you've already got, or you're planning to do some additional engine modifications, something like this oil separator from J&L should absolutely be on your short list of things to get. This is an easy, effective mod that's gonna help extend the life of your engine and it comes at a very reasonable price too.Oil separators have kind of a unique sort of place in the market. Unlike most other aftermarket parts that can easily be grouped into power handling or styling mods, oil separators are really more of a modification that's meant to help with the longevity and the reliability of your engine. Now, if you're not familiar with these oil separators attached to the PCV or positive crankcase ventilation system on your engine. The PCV system helps to regulate pressure within the bottom end or crankcase by venting it back up through the intake. In doing this however oil residue gets caught up in the vapors, and that can end up getting the top end of your engine a little dirty.Now, that's where the oil separator comes in. The idea here is that this will strain out the excess oil that gets caught up in the vapors being recirculated and trap them in this little container here. And then you just go ahead and spin this right off, then you can jump out the excess oil. It's especially helpful in modern engines with direct fuel injections since those don't have fuel flowing through the intake manifold or over the intake valves to help keep them clean. So over time, any excess oil or blowby tends to build up the intakes and the valves and gum things up. That's why on newer cars, you'll sometimes see a puff of black smoke when the driver really puts the foot down. Now, all of that obviously can lead to increased engine wear and higher bills for you. So again, that's why you want something like this. Like I said, this is gonna route those vapors coming through the bottom of your engine through here. And this is essentially a filter.Now, J&L has designed this one in-house to trap fine oil vapors in a really fine mesh. And once enough particles build-up, they're gonna fall through this one-and-a-half-inch thick one 16th aluminum honeycomb filter, which you can see right here. They then drop down and are trapped in that little three-ounce can that you can easily remove to clean and empty. And then the air is gonna continue to flow through here uninterrupted keeping that pressure stabilized and the oil stays behind.Now, J&L has done a really good job with this, in my opinion. It's compact, it's well built and it feels like a solid piece, that's because the whole thing is milled from solid bill aluminum. From the base of the tank here has this neural texture to it. So it's really easy to grip and remove even when it's in the engine bay, and there's a nice thick oil ring at the top here to help prevent spillage. It also include this thick oil line with quick disconnects at the end, so this is a really simple thing to install. And the whole thing is anodized black. So it's gonna look nice and clean when you get it installed into your engine bay.Now, three ounces sounds like a pretty small amount and it is. Most engines are only gonna produce about an ounce of oil every thousand miles, and your mileage might vary there a little bit J&L recommends that you check the canister every 500 to 1,000 miles or so when you first install it to get an idea of when it needs to be serviced. However, your engine may not produce as much oil vapor, so you might be able to let it go a little bit longer. If you live in a cold climate, for example, it's likely that you're going to need to check this more often since cold weather means there's gonna be more condensation and the opposite would be true for a warmer climate. Overall, this is a really simple, easy mod to get done in your Charger. It's gonna help keep the top end of your engine cleaner, which means it's gonna run better and run longer. So if you're planning on keeping your car for a while, it's definitely worth your while to pick this up. Now, there are a lot of these on the market, but going with the J&L is a great option because of that construction that we talked about and the fact that it has those proprietary filtering systems, and of course, the price.Coming in around $200, this is actually one of the least expensive options out there in the category. You're getting a really high-quality item here and for the price, even if it saves you on just one repair bill, I think it's worth it. Figure it this way, most dealers are gonna charge more than double the price of this for a routine intake valve cleaning. So if you can buy this and avoid having to do that service even just one time, I'd still call it a win. Now, as I mentioned earlier, this is pretty easy to install and that's the truth. It's gonna get a one out of three on our difficulty meter, and it should only take you about 30 minutes to get it all set up. You go ahead and mount the bracket, bolt that to the car, attach this to the bracket itself, attach the hoses and you're all set to go. Just remember to follow those cleaning intervals. And now let's throw it over to one of our AM customers, who's gonna show you the process for getting this installed on your Charger.Man 1: So for this install, all you need is a 15-millimeter socket or wrench and a Phillip screwdriver. All right. So for this install, you're gonna wanna start out by taking the stock tube out, leaving all your hose fittings on there. You're gonna want to remove this bolt out of the motor. That's where your mounting bracket's gonna go. All right. And you wanna put this bracket on right here, just loosely mounted on there and tighten it up after you get everything lined up. All right. I'm gonna wanna take the separator and turn this fitting here. Plug that in. Plug this bad boy in up here. You can mount your can onto your mounting bracket. All right. Now, you got to use your Phillip screwdriver, tighten everything up and now come back with your ratchet, and lock it down, and that's it.Jake: That's gonna do it for our review and install of the J&L 3.0 oil separator for the 2011 and newer 6.4 liter HEMI Chargers.
