Jake: Jake here for American Muscle, and today I'm taking a look at the JBA Performance, 1-7/8 inch Long Tube Headers in the natural finish for 2006, and newer V8 Chargers. If you're looking to beef up the performance chops of your Hemi Charger, a set of long tube headers should be on your radar. These 1-7/8 inch headers from JBA Performance are worth checking out for some of their unique features. They have thoughtful, design performance gains, good price point, and of course, the sound. Now, increasing the path or volume of airflow on either the intake or the exhaust side of the engine is gonna have a noticeable effect on power and power delivery. But nothing quite exemplifies the difference it can make more than a set of long tube headers. Now, we can sit here all day and debate, long tubes versus short tubes and the differences between different diameters of piping, but that's been done many times over, so we're gonna skip that. The short version of the story is, if you're looking for better sound, more airflow, and increased high RPM power, long tubes are gonna be your ticket. Now, a few things I do wanna point out before we get into the details of the headers themselves, first, is that these are going to require you to tune your car. Since you're changing up the exhaust flow and the location of the oxygen sensors too, you need that tune to get things working together smoothly. Other thing to note here is that you cannot use your factory mid-pipes due to the nature of the design here, these are gonna require you to go with aftermarket mid-pipes. The stock ones just aren't gonna fit. This is something to be aware of anyway, but especially so if you want or need to have catalytic converters on your car for inspection purposes since that means you're gonna have to explore your aftermarket options. Now, we're not gonna be putting these on the Dino today, but JBA has gone to great lengths to Dino and race test these headers to make sure that they deliver the best performance gains they can throughout the rev range. Again, these are 1-7/8 inch mandrel bent, stainless steel primaries, so they're much larger than your factory manifolds. And having that extra length versus shorties or those stock manifolds also helps relieve back pressure, which is gonna keep everything flowing nice and smoothly, and contributes to those power gains. And the flanges at the top here are three-eighths of an inch thick, and they're laser cut to prevent against leaks and warping. And as you can see, the exhaust ports here on the flange are also significantly larger than on your stock manifolds. And again, that's gonna provide much better exhaust flow. These are also ideal because they're designed to work with ported cylinder heads. So, if you've already done that mod, this is the logical next step for you. Everything comes together in the patented Firecone collector at the base of the header here. And that is specifically designed to enhance exhaust gas scavenging. And again, that promotes even better flow. Now, these have what they call a natural finish. So, they are not coated, but they are stainless steel, so they're gonna develop what JBA has called a performance patina over time. And I really like that word because it means that they're gonna get that cool purplely blue heat cycle look, which is gonna look awesome when you pop the hood. And of course, being stainless steel means they're gonna withstand the elements so rust and corrosion shouldn't be an issue either. Now, JBA did something smart with the fitment here in that these are actually designed to fit lowered cars.So you notice, they're pretty low profile as far as headers go. So, these are built in such a way that the collector down here is gonna stay tucked inside of the frame once it's installed. So, that means even if your car is really low, these are not gonna drag on the ground and create issues. And then of course, we have the sound, and yes, the power is nice, but the noise is really where it's at with long tube headers. Long tubes are known to bring that loud, aggressive, muscle car sound, and these are certainly no exception. You are going to get a noticeable difference in sound even if you are running catted mid-pipes and a stock cat-back. It's gonna be loud, so just prepare yourself for that. But if you wanna keep a lid on things, to some extent, like I alluded to a moment ago, you can run these with catted mid pipes and a stock exhaust after that. However, these do, of course, pair nicely with aftermarket cat backs and aftermarket catalytic converters too. Now, price-wise, these are gonna run you around $875. Now, that does put them towards the less expensive end of the spectrum when it comes to long tube headers, but that doesn't mean that you're sacrificing. Though you aren't getting the mid pipes included, these are still a really nice quality piece. And they come with all the hardware, new gaskets, and even O2 sensor extensions. So, everything you need to get them installed. So, if you're looking for the benefits of long tubes without blowing the budget, I'd say these are a great option for you. Now, on that note, we do need to talk about the installation. Not pulling any punches here, doing headers is not an easy job. These are gonna get a three out of three on our difficulty meter, and you should plan on it taking you a better part of a day to do this job. While all the hardware and new gaskets that you need are included in the box, like I mentioned, doing this job is gonna test the metal of your toolbox and of your skill set as well. This is an involved job, especially if you don't have access to a lift. Now, of course, asking your preferred shop or mechanic to install these for you is always an option. And in a case like this, if you're not comfortable really diving in there, professional installation is gonna be your best bet. As with most things though, if you've got the skill set, the toolbox, and of course, the time, you can do these at home, just be aware of how involved of a job it is before you attempt it. Now, that's gonna wrap it up here for our review of the JBA Performance, 1-7/8 inch Long Tube Headers with the natural finish for 2006 and newer V8 Chargers. Thank you for watching. And as always, for all things Charger, be sure to keep it right here, at americanmuscle.com.
