Jake: Jake here for AmericanMuscle. And today, I'm taking a look at the Flowmaster American Thunder Cat-Back exhaust fitting 2015 and 2016 5.7 Liter Hemi Chargers. If you find that your charger is lacking in the exhaust department, but you aren't in the business of upsetting all of your neighbors or even your own eardrums, then this American Thunder system from Flowmaster might just be the right setup for you.It gives you that classic Flowmaster rumble without going overboard, and it keeps that clean OEM look by utilizing your factory exhaust bezels. Volume-wise, we'll give this one a three out of five on our loudness meter. Certainly, a noticeable change versus stock, but not as loud or unhinged as a more straight-through system. Now, when someone mentions the name Flowmaster, I'd be willing to bet that most of us can conjure up exactly the type of exhaust note that the company is famous for, a burbly aggressive deep V8 rumble. And that's exactly what you're going to get here. Now, as you heard in the clips at the beginning of the video, this has some volume to it, though it's not quite wake-the-neighbors loud. It is a big difference over stock, but not quite so much that you're going to disrupt the whole neighborhood on cold mornings. That said, you are going to get quite a bit more volume inside of the cabin as well, and that sound is due in no small part to the mufflers. Now, this is a cat-back system, so it replaces your factory mufflers and resonators. Instead, in your place, you get a pair of Flowmaster's Super 44 Series mufflers. And they're going to provide that rich, deep tone to keep things in check sound-wise inside of the cabin as well. But roll down the windows, and you're going to hear that excellent growl out of the tailpipes. Adding to that growl is the included Scavenger Series X-pipe, so you're going to get more sound, you're going to avoid some drone, and you're going to get a little bit of extra grunt higher up in the rev range because that's exactly what X-pipes are good for.But that sound will be kept on a bit under wraps given the fact that as you can probably see, this system doesn't come with any separate tips. Now, the ends of the pipes here are polished for a nice clean look, but the system is designed to utilize your factory exhaust bezel so that overall look is very much stock. Now, of course, that does leave you the option to change things up if you wish as well.So if you want to get some tips later, if you want to change out that lower valence on the rear of the car, you can certainly do that. But you can also utilize this right out of the box just as it sits and keep it very much stock-looking. Construction here is all 409-grade stainless steel. It's mandrel bent and two and a half inches in diameter, and that 409 steel is going to provide you some good resistance to corrosion and rust. Now, of course, it's not going to be quite as good as 304 stainless, but still a nice level of protection for your ride, and it's going to save you a bit of money versus 304 as well. Speaking of pricing, this system is going to come in at just about $1,000, which does put it towards the lower end of the pricing spectrum for these cars. Again, you're saving a bit over a 304 setup or one that might come with some new separate tips. But if what you're really after is a quality system with a good sound profile, then this is going to be an excellent choice for you.Installation, like most exhausts, is going to get a two out of three on our difficulty meter, and it should take you about two hours to complete. Now, this is going to utilize all of your factory exhaust hanger locations, and all the hardware that you need to get it done comes in the box so no need to get anything additional or modify anything on your car. You can just take the old exhaust off, bolt this one right on up. And to show you how to get that done, let's head over to the install bay.Man: The tools you'll need for this project are a 1/2-inch impact gun, a 3/8 impact gun, a long 3/8 extension, a 13-millimeter and a 15-millimeter socket, a 13-millimeter wrench, an exhaust hanger removal tool, a cloth, and some spray lube. So the first thing we're going to want to do is use a little spray lube on the isolator behind the muffler so that we can get that hanger out of the exhaust. Now, we can use our hanger removal tool and push this out, and then use our 13-millimeter wrench to remove the two nuts on our exhaust flange. Now we'll remove the two rear hangers. One of them is right behind the wheel, and the other one is right at the end of the muffler. So we're using our 13-millimeter socket. We'll get those taken out. Now we can remove the two rear hangers on the passenger side and then move up to the two crossmembers that have to come out as well. Now we'll remove the two crossmembers here and here using our 13-millimeter socket. Now we can loosen up the two front clamps using our 15-millimeter socket. Now we've got one more bolt to remove. It's right up here on the passenger side right next to the differential. We're going to use our 13-millimeter slot wrench to get that out, and then we can go ahead and get an extra pair of hands because we're on a lift to go ahead and remove the rest of the exhaust.Okay, like I said earlier, since we're on a lift, I got my buddy, Mark, here to help me lift this out. So what we're going to do, we're just going to lift it up off of the hook here, push it back to get it off the front pipes, and then lower it down. So before we hang our tailpipes, we need to transfer our hangers from our stock system to our new system. So, in order to do that, we're going to use a little spray lube just on the end here of the hanger arm on all three of them, and then we'll use our hanger removal tool to pull them out and then we can slide them onto the new pipes. Now we can just slide the hangers onto our new pipes, and they should slide on pretty easy since they should have a little bit of the lube left on them. Now we can go ahead and install our X-pipe onto our stock pipes using our 2.5-inch clamps. We'll just slip them over the ends. Now, you want to make sure that your nuts on the clamps are facing out and also the Flowmaster logo on the X-pipe is facing down. Now we can go ahead and tighten our clamps down to snug them up, but not tighten them down all the way using our 15-millimeter socket. Now we go ahead and slide our muffler clamp onto the inlet side of the muffler, which the inlet side is the one that is offset from the center as opposed to the one directly coming out of the center. And we'll go ahead and slide that onto our X-pipe, and we can snug that down with our 15-millimeter socket. Now, we're not going to tighten this down all the way. We want to have a little bit of room for adjustment later on when we finish the whole install. Now we go ahead and slide our clamp onto our tailpipe, and then we'll insert the tailpipe into the muffler and also connect it to this first hanger right here. It may be a little bit difficult to see with the camera at this angle, but basically, you're just going to slide the exhaust hanger arm over and maneuver the hanger so that you can insert the arm into it like so.Now we can go ahead and secure our rear two hangers with the original hardware. The first one is the one right behind the tire. And now we can move on to the rear hanger. Now we'll tighten those down with our 13-millimeter socket. Now we can move on to the passenger side by slipping the clamp over the inlet side of the muffler and sliding it onto our X-pipe. Now we can slide the clamp over the tailpipe, and then we'll slide the tailpipe into the back of the muffler. And then we'll hook this hanger here on the hanger that's on the crossmember to give us support while we install the rear hangers. Now we'll go ahead and secure this front hanger with the original hardware just to make sure that it stays in place for us. Now we can go ahead and secure the rear two hangers using the original hardware as well. First one is the one right behind the tire and the last hanger at the end of the tailpipe. And now we can tighten them all down with our 13-millimeter socket. And now we'll tighten down our front hanger using our 13-millimeter wrench. Now, before you tighten up all of your clamps, you want to go through and make sure that everything's lined up the way you want it and that all the clearances are at least half an inch away from any body parts, or wires, or hoses, or anything else that might be back there. Then you can go through and tighten everything up using your 15-millimeter socket.Jake: That's going to wrap it up here for our review and install of the Flowmaster American Thunder Cat-Back system fitting 2015 and 2016 5.7 Liter Hemi Chargers. Thanks so much for watching. And remember, for all things Charger, be sure to keep it right here at americanmuscle.com.
