Hey everybody, Dave here with, and I’m here with the rear blackout panel, designed to fit all 05-09 Mustangs. If you’re looking for a blackout panel with some different styling cues from the rest, this one’s for you. This panel is great for anyone looking to give the back of their Mustang a meaner look, it’s made from injection molded plastic so it’s all one piece, this deck lid panel features a high gloss finish with a dark smoked look, and a perfectly sized opening for your emblem to stand out and shine. Installation is really simple, and it requires no drilling, and no bondo. You simply want to clean your deck lid thoroughly, then take and peel off the protective strips on the 3M tape already applied to the deck lid panel, line it up, and stick it on. It requires no extra tools, and installation should take you no more than a half hour. For a smoked out and aggressive style that looks great on any 05-09 Mustang, the rear blackout panel is the way to go.

Aggressive Style. Give your S197 Mustang's back end an aggressive, "blacked out" look with a SpeedForm Rear Blackout Panel. Goes great with other smoked or black accessories, especially tail lights or light covers, to give your 'Stang a standout appearance that will turn heads.

Ask a Question

Will the MMD Trunk Emblem pre painted fit once the Speedform Decklid Blackout Panel is fitted?

  • No, The MMD Trunk Emblem Surround - Pre-Painted for the 05-09 All Mustangs will not fit directly on the SpeedForm Decklid Blackout Panel for the 05-09 All Mustangs without custom modification because it will not fit flush against the raised panel.

It appears the emblem on my trunk lid is a little off. Without taking the tape off I placed the panel on the deck lid and side to side it fit flush but there is a gap around the emblem on the left side and the red paint shows through. If I adjust the center then the left side shows the red paint and the right has a slight overhang. I was thinking of taking a black magic marker and coloring around the emblem but then there is a gap for water (and who knows what) to get behind the panel. I was thinking of replacing the emblem but it appears to have two pegs to install it with. Any suggestions???????

How do I fix the misaligned cutout hole for the deck emblem? It hangs over the edge on the right side of the deck and leaves a gap on the left side.

  • If this product is not aligned properly, it's a matter of identifying as to why, and honestly it comes down to one of two scenarios: 1. The product was miss-manufactured. 2. Your Mustang has a slight imperfection that is only noticeable during the installation of a decklid panel. To expand upon the second scenario, we manufacture this decklid panel to fit all Mustangs between 05-09. The idea is every single panel has the same exact dimensions every time its manufactured. Now, if your Mustang came out of the factory with your emblem a quarter or an 8th of an inch off center, or something along those lines, it is virtually unnoticeable until you go to apply what is effectively a very generalized template (this decklid). However, to begin the process of figuring out whether scenario 1 or scenario 2 is the culprit for the issue, it would require giving out customer service center a call. So unfortunately there is no "fixing" the product. It's identifying which of those two issues is the cause and acting accordingly. Option one is a simple replacement. Unfortunately if it is option 2, there is no simple solution.

Would it be a good idea to add some 3M tape around the emblem hole on the deck lid cover to keep dust and dirt out? I saw in one of the reviews about it catching some dirt...once I install it, I don't want to have to take it off to clean behind it.

  • The emblem surrounds the opening for the Decklid Blackout Panel, however, some extra 3M tape would not hurt.

once it's applied with the double sided tape, can it be removed and readjusted? or is it permanent and do i risk messing up the paint trying to rip it off?

  • You can take off this Decklid Panel after you've installed it. But you need to be very careful while taking it off to make sure no paint is removed. Before installed the Panel, you can index the position of it by using painter's tape. This will help in finding the perfect spot for it.

how can i give it that matte look that they display in the photo. Mine looks far glossier and a light black

  • If you want that matte look just get one can of plasti dip and the panel can be on or off the car. just spray it down till you are happy, see some videos for advice and you will get that great matte look you are going for.

    I did some modifications

I had to do some modification to the black out panel, I didn't like the idea of sticking the panel directly on the car itself. I had the magnet type black out panel before which I liked but this one seems better. So what I did was cut the maget panel up into strips and peeled the tape off of this panel and put the maget strips on the tape that came with this panel. It fits really great on the car so when I need to take it off I can.

    Perfect minor touch

I had the magnetic panel, but that thing bubbled and fell apart after a few months (wouldn't recommend). My car looked a little plain without it though, so I bought this one. Oddly enough, I found it easier to apply than the magnetic one which was tight around the faux cap. The center hole on this one was a little big so you can see the original paint, but you have to look close. Overall I love it as it's a perfect compliment to the 2010 lights I installed as well.

Man, does this thing look great. Just clean, wipe, unpeel, and stick. Your off with a completely new looking back end. Looks great on these stangs, gets looks and compliments every where I go, considering not many people have them! Thanks American muscle with helping deck out another one of my Stangs! (mine is completely blacked out, with the legend lime green color)

    Nice Panel

Nice fit, looks great. When you go to install,do not tear all the plastic off the 3m tape.Peel back about 1\" fron one end of each piece of tape.If you don\'t have it set just right you can get it back off. When you get it right you can pull the plastic off the tape as you press it on.

    Rear black~out panel

I was dissapointed with water from car washes getting behind the panel and having water spots that I could not get to, to wipe clean....I removed it, and it now resides in my closet. I'd like to put it back on, but wondered how to keep water from getting underneath it again?? Love the look...hate the water spots. Suggestions?? I selected "no" because of above.

The tape that comes on the blackout panel should prevent water from getting inside. I would try applying some additional 3M tape to the sides; this should create a seal to keep any water from getting to the back side. I'm going to forward this feedback to our development team to see what can be done to improve this blackout panel. If the side tape doesn't help, you can certainly give us a call and we can help you find something you'd enjoy more!

Very happy with my decision over the magnetic panel. This one is extremely shiny and makes the car look awesome and stand out from the rest. I've received many compliments. I also installed the brake light tint kit and trust me, you won't be disappointed! Thanks A.M.

    Nice addition to Gen5 Taillights

Ordered and received in 2 days. This is a nice piece to complete the black-out look with the new Gen5 tailights. The install was easy and took about 45 minutes. I followed the advice of another reviewer and added some additional 3-M tape to the left and right vertical sides to prevent water from getting behind the piece. The 2 things preventing me from giving 5-stars for fit was that the center hole was slightly out of round(oval shape from left to right), and the left/right outside edges of my decklid were not completely covered after install.

    Poor Fit

It adds a nice look to my white and black balance, but the fitment leaves gaps on the ends. The gap is larger on the right than on the left, I cannot imagine that it took more than a few cents to manufacture each panel.

    Not good for white cars

I purchased this item for my Performance White GT/CS after installing the Gen 5 tail lights. I wanted the glossy look of this unit. However, I was not aware how transparent it actually is. I did a test fit on the car. The white paint shows through far too much. It doesn't give the blackout look that I want. It also does not fit well. It is approximately 1/8" short on each end. I am going to return the unit and most likely either have the panel painted or purchase an SHR honeycomb panel.

    Awesome, low cost addition

After installing the Raxiom Gen 5 tail lights on my Torch Red 07 the deck lid panel looked plain. The lights are blacked out but glossy so I went with this deck lid panel and wow, what a difference it makes. Kinda ties it all together. One complaint is with the width of the panel. Facing the panel, the right side reached the end of the panel while the left side was about 1/8" short, exposing a strip of red paint. The center hole was lined up perfectly. I used a strip of black electric tape to cover both ends and installed the panel. Unless you are standing an inch away you cant see the tape. For the price you cant beat it.

I bought this item to enhance the look of my car. Where the shipping was good, the fitment of the panel was not. On the edges of the panel where it is closest to the tail lights, you can clearly see the liver paint visible between the light and what is now the tinted panel cover. It looks cheap and I was not impressed.

    Easiest exterior upgrade!

I installed this in about 5 minutes the night I got it, with minimal lighting it was still a breeze to install. The fitment was a little off on the sides, but you can only see the imperfection when you look real close from a side angle. The cover is slightly transparent so when facing direct sunlight it looks a little lighter since my car is orange. But at all other times of the day/night it looks awesome. Couldn't be happier with the simplicity of it!

    Amazing difference

My panel came with a few "waves" in it so I would advise laying it out in the sun to allow them to work their way out. You might consider adding a little more double sided tape as there is none on the two sides. But what is there does hold fairly well as long as you put it on correctly the first time. I would also adive a test fit and another set of hands to place both ends of the panel on correctly the first time. Some adhesive promotor from 3m will help to improve the grip. But make sure that you clean the area well and to allow about 24 hrs for it to cure, that means no driving.. And applying this in warmer temperatures would probably help too as I installed this in the fall with barely any sun exposure and it has still not cured completly in 2 weeks.. It fits like a glove and looks amazing after it is installed though. I would still buy this again but just do things a little better the first time had I known what I was really getting into.

    deck lid blackout panel...

I ordered the blackout panel along with the painted rear window louvers, mirror covers and short antenna to improve the appearance of my Mustang. The blackout panel adds a nice touch. It is important to remove it at least once a month and wash the paintwork behind it, as dust and dirt can get in between the panel and the deck lid and can cause a problem with swirling and scratching.

    A little surprised

Timely shipping, easy install, looks good. Nowhere near enough tape, would advise using black silicone around all edges to keep it watertight. I was very surprised at the material. I did not expect it to be as plasticky as it is. It also, unfortunately, is a dust attractant. It is proving to be a hassle to keep clean.
