Review & Installation Video

Hey everybody, Dave here with AmericanMuscle.com, and I’m here with the rear blackout panel, designed to fit all 05-09 Mustangs. If you’re looking for a blackout panel with some different styling cues from the rest, this one’s for you. This panel is great for anyone looking to give the back of their Mustang a meaner look, it’s made from injection molded plastic so it’s all one piece, this deck lid panel features a high gloss finish with a dark smoked look, and a perfectly sized opening for your emblem to stand out and shine. Installation is really simple, and it requires no drilling, and no bondo. You simply want to clean your deck lid thoroughly, then take and peel off the protective strips on the 3M tape already applied to the deck lid panel, line it up, and stick it on. It requires no extra tools, and installation should take you no more than a half hour. For a smoked out and aggressive style that looks great on any 05-09 Mustang, the rear blackout panel is the way to go.

Aggressive Style. Give your S197 Mustang's back end an aggressive, "blacked out" look with a SpeedForm Rear Blackout Panel. Goes great with other smoked or black accessories, especially tail lights or light covers, to give your 'Stang a standout appearance that will turn heads.

Premium Quality. This premium quality piece is made from injection molded composite for great looks and durability. It even features a round opening for your factory trunk emblem to show through.

Easy Installation. This rear SpeedForm Mustang blackout panel installs in less than 30 minutes and no tools are required. You'll be enjoying the newly improved, aggressive good looks of your car in no time.

Technical Note. This Mustang Rear Blackout Panel is only the center piece. Photo includes the taillight covers.

How do I fix the misaligned cutout hole for the deck emblem? It hangs over the edge on the right side of the deck and leaves a gap on the left side.

  • If this product is not aligned properly, it's a matter of identifying as to why, and honestly it comes down to one of two scenarios: 1. The product was miss-manufactured. 2. Your Mustang has a slight imperfection that is only noticeable during the installation of a decklid panel. To expand upon the second scenario, we manufacture this decklid panel to fit all Mustangs between 05-09. The idea is every single panel has the same exact dimensions every time its manufactured. Now, if your Mustang came out of the factory with your emblem a quarter or an 8th of an inch off center, or something along those lines, it is virtually unnoticeable until you go to apply what is effectively a very generalized template (this decklid). However, to begin the process of figuring out whether scenario 1 or scenario 2 is the culprit for the issue, it would require giving out customer service center a call. So unfortunately there is no "fixing" the product. It's identifying which of those two issues is the cause and acting accordingly. Option one is a simple replacement. Unfortunately if it is option 2, there is no simple solution.

Would it be a good idea to add some 3M tape around the emblem hole on the deck lid cover to keep dust and dirt out? I saw in one of the reviews about it catching some dirt...once I install it, I don't want to have to take it off to clean behind it.

  • The emblem surrounds the opening for the Decklid Blackout Panel, however, some extra 3M tape would not hurt.

once it's applied with the double sided tape, can it be removed and readjusted? or is it permanent and do i risk messing up the paint trying to rip it off?

  • You can take off this Decklid Panel after you've installed it. But you need to be very careful while taking it off to make sure no paint is removed. Before installed the Panel, you can index the position of it by using painter's tape. This will help in finding the perfect spot for it.

how can i give it that matte look that they display in the photo. Mine looks far glossier and a light black

  • If you want that matte look just get one can of plasti dip and the panel can be on or off the car. just spray it down till you are happy, see some videos for advice and you will get that great matte look you are going for.

Re-attaching Can you remove this and reattach it? I would love to get one now but i plan on painting my car within the near future. Would it be better to go with the magnetic one?

  • I had the magnetic one before this one and for the short term definitely go with the magnetic piece. The magnetic one should last 2-3 years. The self adhesive tape on the plastic unit is meant to be relatively permanent and will be tough (but possible) to remove from the car.

Matte or Gloss Is this cover finish a Matte kinda flat black or a Gloss kind of finish?

  • It's a gloss type of finish. Looks great!

Easy to install but not the best fit

It was very easy to install but the fit around the round emblem in the center was horrible. There is a very large gap around it. The hole was simply cut way too big.

    Worse than expected

I have bought a lot of quality stuff from American Muscle, but this thing wasn't anything like I thought it would be. First off, it is a black translucent piece of plastic. I was hoping for it to at least be opaque. Second, it doesn't reach all the way across the deck lid in between the taillights.

    Great mod! But didn't fit??

This was my first mod. I was so excited when i got it. But the next day, the corners started to become unattached. Now, it's really bad. I followed the directions and put it on correctly; just really confused on what happened. Still looks fantastic!!

    A little disappointing

Was a little disappointed with this product. Firstly, the fit is pretty terrible. The panel is not wide enough so you have bodywork showing at both sides, particularly noticeable on my white car. Secondly, the product is translucent, so you can see the upper and lower tape strips through he panel, again fairly noticeable on my car. The deck lid panel does improve the appearance of the car, but I would advise spending a little more to get one of the better quality products as this one isn't quite up to scratch.

    Good look, poor fit

It's a good look but it could have been a great look. I'm a little disappointed that the hole isn't dead center on mine. It shows some paint on my drivers side and overhangs on the passengers side. It's a cheap part with an unfortunately cheap design.

    Not good for white cars

I purchased this item for my Performance White GT/CS after installing the Gen 5 tail lights. I wanted the glossy look of this unit. However, I was not aware how transparent it actually is. I did a test fit on the car. The white paint shows through far too much. It doesn't give the blackout look that I want. It also does not fit well. It is approximately 1/8" short on each end. I am going to return the unit and most likely either have the panel painted or purchase an SHR honeycomb panel.

I bought this item to enhance the look of my car. Where the shipping was good, the fitment of the panel was not. On the edges of the panel where it is closest to the tail lights, you can clearly see the liver paint visible between the light and what is now the tinted panel cover. It looks cheap and I was not impressed.

recently installed Raxiom Gen 5 tail lights on my 07 gt/cs , then added the high gloss smoxed deck lid, the entire back of the car just changed its appearance, and when the tail lights are on, wow! these two upgrades are a match! The deck lid could of been cut to fit a little better, the hole is slightly bigger, but as you stand back its hard to notice, overall the deck lid looks great and has a nice shine nice upgrade for the money

    Product has potential

Adds great appearance especially with the new gen 5 tail lights. However the fitment is pretty poor. Does not curve enough for proper fit at top of deck lid and also is a bit narrow on each side near top of deck lid, does not completely cover and paint shows a little on each side near the top of deck lid.

    Easiest exterior upgrade!

I installed this in about 5 minutes the night I got it, with minimal lighting it was still a breeze to install. The fitment was a little off on the sides, but you can only see the imperfection when you look real close from a side angle. The cover is slightly transparent so when facing direct sunlight it looks a little lighter since my car is orange. But at all other times of the day/night it looks awesome. Couldn't be happier with the simplicity of it!

Look great but smoked color retains visible stains

As title says. It fits and looks great BUT the water gets behind it and since it is smoked and not solid black, you can see water streaks/stains that you can not get to once you install this. Cheap so no biggy but I will be replacing with the more expensive solid black piece. Looks much darker in pic than it really is.

    • Response from AmericanMuscle

This is the first I've heard of the water problem getting behind the panel. We do carry an array of other options and designs that I know you'd be very happy with. You can take a look here: http://www.americanmuscle.com/0509-decklid-panels.html and if you have any questions about one in particular, please give one of our Experts a call. They'd be glad to help out!

    Looks great but....

This looks great but the tap just will not stick I've bought more 3M tape and tried 3 times and it comes off so I don't know what to do... By the way this is tinted plastic so you can see through, I'm not sure what kind of effect this will have on a bright colored stang.

    deck lid blackout panel...

I ordered the blackout panel along with the painted rear window louvers, mirror covers and short antenna to improve the appearance of my Mustang. The blackout panel adds a nice touch. It is important to remove it at least once a month and wash the paintwork behind it, as dust and dirt can get in between the panel and the deck lid and can cause a problem with swirling and scratching.
