    Review & Installation Video

Hey everybody, Dave here with AmericanMuscle.com, and I’m here with the rear blackout panel, designed to fit all 05-09 Mustangs. If you’re looking for a blackout panel with some different styling cues from the rest, this one’s for you. This panel is great for anyone looking to give the back of their Mustang a meaner look, it’s made from injection molded plastic so it’s all one piece, this deck lid panel features a high gloss finish with a dark smoked look, and a perfectly sized opening for your emblem to stand out and shine. Installation is really simple, and it requires no drilling, and no bondo. You simply want to clean your deck lid thoroughly, then take and peel off the protective strips on the 3M tape already applied to the deck lid panel, line it up, and stick it on. It requires no extra tools, and installation should take you no more than a half hour. For a smoked out and aggressive style that looks great on any 05-09 Mustang, the rear blackout panel is the way to go.

Aggressive Style. Give your S197 Mustang's back end an aggressive, "blacked out" look with a SpeedForm Rear Blackout Panel. Goes great with other smoked or black accessories, especially tail lights or light covers, to give your 'Stang a standout appearance that will turn heads.

Premium Quality. This premium quality piece is made from injection molded composite for great looks and durability. It even features a round opening for your factory trunk emblem to show through.

Easy Installation. This rear SpeedForm Mustang blackout panel installs in less than 30 minutes and no tools are required. You'll be enjoying the newly improved, aggressive good looks of your car in no time.

Technical Note. This Mustang Rear Blackout Panel is only the center piece. Photo includes the taillight covers.

    Ask a Question

Will the MMD Trunk Emblem pre painted fit once the Speedform Decklid Blackout Panel is fitted?

    AlexL

    • No, The MMD Trunk Emblem Surround - Pre-Painted for the 05-09 All Mustangs will not fit directly on the SpeedForm Decklid Blackout Panel for the 05-09 All Mustangs without custom modification because it will not fit flush against the raised panel. https://www.americanmuscle.com/painted-rear-emblem-cover-0509.html

How do I fix the misaligned cutout hole for the deck emblem? It hangs over the edge on the right side of the deck and leaves a gap on the left side.

    Anonymous

    • If this product is not aligned properly, it's a matter of identifying as to why, and honestly it comes down to one of two scenarios: 1. The product was miss-manufactured. 2. Your Mustang has a slight imperfection that is only noticeable during the installation of a decklid panel. To expand upon the second scenario, we manufacture this decklid panel to fit all Mustangs between 05-09. The idea is every single panel has the same exact dimensions every time its manufactured. Now, if your Mustang came out of the factory with your emblem a quarter or an 8th of an inch off center, or something along those lines, it is virtually unnoticeable until you go to apply what is effectively a very generalized template (this decklid). However, to begin the process of figuring out whether scenario 1 or scenario 2 is the culprit for the issue, it would require giving out customer service center a call. So unfortunately there is no "fixing" the product. It's identifying which of those two issues is the cause and acting accordingly. Option one is a simple replacement. Unfortunately if it is option 2, there is no simple solution.

Would it be a good idea to add some 3M tape around the emblem hole on the deck lid cover to keep dust and dirt out? I saw in one of the reviews about it catching some dirt...once I install it, I don't want to have to take it off to clean behind it.

    BradK

    • The emblem surrounds the opening for the Decklid Blackout Panel, however, some extra 3M tape would not hurt.

once it's applied with the double sided tape, can it be removed and readjusted? or is it permanent and do i risk messing up the paint trying to rip it off?

    vic

    • You can take off this Decklid Panel after you've installed it. But you need to be very careful while taking it off to make sure no paint is removed. Before installed the Panel, you can index the position of it by using painter's tape. This will help in finding the perfect spot for it.

how can i give it that matte look that they display in the photo. Mine looks far glossier and a light black

    quinker19

    • If you want that matte look just get one can of plasti dip and the panel can be on or off the car. just spray it down till you are happy, see some videos for advice and you will get that great matte look you are going for.

Re-attaching Can you remove this and reattach it? I would love to get one now but i plan on painting my car within the near future. Would it be better to go with the magnetic one?

    jamesbond

    • I had the magnetic one before this one and for the short term definitely go with the magnetic piece. The magnetic one should last 2-3 years. The self adhesive tape on the plastic unit is meant to be relatively permanent and will be tough (but possible) to remove from the car.

Looks good just a little small.

The look fits my 06 Tungsten paint. The install was less than one hour. The only issue is size. There is about a quarter of an inch gap on the left side edge that doesn't cover the deck lid. So you can see the paint on that edge.

      Hole was off center

Material was solid. The only downfall was that the center hole was about half an inch off center.

      Nice update to a 2008 V6

This was a simple, easy to install update to my red V6. I also installed a new emblem at the same time. Very nice look for a reasonable price.

Looks great could be cut and sized better

This panel looks nice and gives the back end a great look. No matter how hard and patient I was trying to get this to fit though there was always a little bit of paint showing on the edges by the tail lights. Overall looks good but could be cut to fit closer to the tail lights. I am using the Raxiom GEN 5 so that might be making a difference

      Great appearance mod!

Really love the way this made the car look! Fit was nearly dead on though there was a bit on drivers side I did have to paint to hide silver but I'm OCD. Anyhow I would recommend this to anyone looking to get a great appearance mod on a budget!

      let down

first time I've had to be let down.... product doesn't fit right and its not really BLACKout... more like smoke, you can still see the decklid through it.... if you want a true BLACKOUT I wouldn't recommend this.... In fact I never installed it... still in the box with the tape on it... wrapped the way it came..... But American muscle did as always deliver on time

      Does not fit at all!

Gap around the rear emblem was at least 1 inch. It stopped about an inch and a half from the right taillight and 2 inches from the left taillight. I returned mine. AM customer service was great though. They paid for return shipping because others have had the same problem and they thought it had been corrected.

      Not worth the price

I bought this to replace a vinyl one that was ripping off, when Installed it. It barely even covers everything, the hole is way too big and the driver side is not even fully covered, and being advertised as "smoked" it's like a grayish color. You think for this overpriced piece of plastic you're getting quality stuff, it's not even worth it.

      Please read this...

First off, this is a supplier issue. American Muscle is a fantastic company and very easy to work with even with a problematic part like this. That being said, this panel will NOT fit properly on your S197 as of March 2018. First, the faux gas cap hole is oval shaped and too large. Second, the panel shows a heavy quarter inch of paint on the driver side if you center the hole up. Third, it will be warped a bit out of the box. (This isn't really an issue if you have plenty of 3m tape.) Last, it plainly says "smoked panel" in the description and it is LIGHTLY SMOKED, you will need to either sand and paint the underside of the panel, or lay vinyl under it if your car is not a dark color. AM's more expensive panels fit awesome, but if you want one like this, get the GTS brand panel, a can of flat black paint for the underside and some very fine sandpaper. We have over 700 members in our Mustang club and i have seen ALOT of decklid panels so take my advice here.

      Edges not uniform

To start this particular item was delayed from my original order apparently due to weather. But received the rest of my order when I was suppose to? Anyways, where to begin. Well first off the deck lid panel is not a solid black like it looks like in the pictures. It’s transparent like a smoked lens. Also the edges of the panel looked to be cut by a 5 year old. The edges are all wavy and not uniformed to the tail lights. All in all really disappointed. I’ve been out of the mustang scene for a few years so it’s been awhile since I’ve bought anything off this site. So far my experience back has not been great. Hopefully this time was just a fluke, because In the past I praised AM up and down. But now.... As for the panel itself I will not be installing it because it looks cheap.
