Awesome, But Maybe Not Legal in TX
After being quite impressed with the brightness of the LED dome lights (a must if you want to be able to really see in your Stang at night) I decided to replace my dim, stock license plate light with an LED as well, and ordered this product.
It went in extremely easily, once I figured out that the "screws" on the LP light housing are actually pushpins. The LED looked SO much better than stock, and really lit up the plate. It gave a nice, custom appearance to the back of my '07!Stang as well.
I drove around town for about two weeks, then took a 30 mile trip on a major highway one night.
With my cruise set at 2 mph above the speed limit and cars blowing past me, I figured I had nothing to fear from the Texas State Trooper parked on the side of the highway.
I figured wrong. The trooper quickly lit me up and told me he pulled me over because my LP light looked blue, and any kind of blue light on a non-emergency vehicle is illegal in TX. He did quickly tell me he was just going to give me a warning, however..
After getting my warning, I politely told the trooper that I wasn't trying to be a jerk or question him, but that my LP light was supposed to be white LED, just like the flashlight he was using. He told me he understood, but he thought it looked blue as I went past, so he came after me. He basically told me to continue to use it at my own risk, and that if he pulled me over for it, other law enforcement would too.
The only thing I can figure out is that the white LED reflecting off my Tungsten paint looked bluish, especially as I went past him.
While many of you are probably rolling your eyes and calling this officer a jerk, he most assuredly was not. He asked all about my car, and told me about his '06 GT daily driver and his '91 5.0 hot rod. He was also quite impressed by my Roushcharger.
The product itself worked and looked great. Bottom line though, I cannot recommend this product, at least for customers in TX. It's entirely possible you could run 100,000 miles at night and never get pulled over...but I'm not going to try my luck.
