How to Install a Steeda Adjustable Clutch Cable on your 1979-1993 Mustang 5.0L

Installation Time

Tools Required
  • Ratchet
  • 8mm socket and/or wrench
  • 10mm socket
  • 10mm wrench
  • Floor jack
  • Jack stands(2)

Installation

1. Engage Emergency brake and put transmission in gear. (Automatics use park)

2. the floor jack, carefully jack the car up from the K-member.

3. Slide jack stands underneath the car in safe locations. (under each A-arm)

4. Follow the old clutch cable underneath the car where it goes to the transmission.

5. Remove the 8mm bolt holding the black cover using the 8mm socket or wrench. (Red circle: 8mm bolt) (yellow circle: black cover)         


6. After the cover is removed it should look something like this.         


7. Next remove the C clip holding the cable in place (Red circle: C-clip) followed by the two 10mm clutch adjusting nuts. (Yellow circle: two 10mm nuts)         


8. Next remove the clutch cable bracket found in the engine bay using the appropriate sized socket. (Red circle: clutch cable bracket, Yellow circle: 10mm bolt)         


9. Unhook the end of the clutch cable from the clutch quadrant found under the steering column inside the cab of the car.         


10. Carefully pull the end of the clutch cable through the firewall and the other end carefully guide up through from underneath the car.

11. Now slide new cable into the same position as the old one.

12. Reattach bracket that holds the cable in position. (Red circle)         


13. Guide end of cable through the firewall and position it back onto the clutch quadrant (Yellow circle: hole in firewall, Red circle: clutch quadrant)         


14. Guide other end of cable through the same location as the old one.

15. Slide C-clip back into position(Red circle: C-clip) and thread the first 10mm nut on until there is no slack in cable. Followed by the second 10mm nut (yellow circle)         



16. Now go and feel the clutch pedal. There should be a little slack before the clutch engages. If not, tighten or loosen the 10mm nut at the adjustable end of the cable until the sweet spot is found.

17. Bolt the black cover back on. Remove the jack stands, and carefully set the car back down using the floor jack.         


18. Enjoy the new clutch pedal feeling.
