Hey I’m Justin with AmericanMuscle.com and I’m checking out this hood scoop option from MMD fitting all 05-09 Mustangs, available in your choice of either pre painted, or unpainted. If you didn’t know, MMD is an industry leader in producing a wide variety of styling accessories for your Mustang, designed to separate your ride from the rest. This scoop from MMD is for the Mustang owner who is looking to give his or her S197 a look similar to the hood scoop found on all 07-09 California specials. If you’re familiar with these cars, then you know they had some subtle styling differences when compared to other models, but those differences were enough to separate the California specials from other models, thanks to styling parts like this hood scoop. This hood was designed using original Ford CAD data, to achieve a fit that really does suit the hood of the S197 perfectly. As for the construction, MMD went with an extremely lightweight and durable ABS plastic construction for the build, that again is offered in two different finish options. If you’re looking to save a few bucks and you have a connection with your local paint shop, then the unpainted choice may be a better option, however if you’re the majority of Mustang owners out there, and you know how much of a pain it is to have parts sprayed and get it matched correctly, then you should definitely check out one of our pre painted options. You can check out a complete list of the color options available for this particular scoop by clicking the link below and going to AmericanMuscle.com, and see for yourself. All of our pre painted parts do get sprayed right here at AmericanMuscle headquarters, using the same base and clear coat that Ford uses on their Mustangs, so basically you can expect a perfect color match right out of the box. The package includes everything you see here, including the scoop itself, the grille insert, the drilling template, 3M automotive tape, 3M adhesion promoter, alcohol prep pads, and finally the installation hardware. You will have to drill a few holes into your hood to get this scoop installed properly, once you do have your holes drilled, go ahead and move over to the back side of the scoop and start to prep that first using the alcohol prep pads and then the 3M adhesion promoter. After that go ahead and install the 3M tape to both the back side of the scoop itself, and to the grille insert, install that grille insert onto the scoop, and then place that scoop on the hood surface, go ahead and tighten up the hardware underneath the hood, and you should be good to go. I know it’s a little daunting drilling into your hood, but you should have total confidence thanks to the included template, that should allow you to get this job done in about an hour’s time from start to finish. So if you’re looking to add a little more muscle to the hood of your S197, that is reminiscent of the 07-09 California specials, then be sure to check out one of these hood scoop options from MMD, available at AmericanMuscle.com, and if you want to check out the rest of MMD’s lineup, go ahead and click the link below or up in the corner to subscribe to our YouTube channel, and keep an eye out for the newest and coolest parts available for your late generation Mustang.

I have researched other hood scoops on the market and this one most closely resembles the Shaker hood scoop size and design including the 8-cell egg crate grille used on the 1969 Mustang -- the model year styling most favored by the S197. I have decided I am NOT drilling holes into the hood of my S197 Mustang. It ain't happening. I have read the other answers of questions posted here, and I think this MMD scoop CAN be successfully mounted with the supplied tape. Can you please confirm that? Also, I am investigating the use of a cyanoacrylate adhesive to coat the interface of the acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) edge to the metal hood for a permanent bond -- instead of using the suppled 3M double-sided automotive bonding tape. Has cyanoacrylate glues been successfully used instead of screws to secure the hood scoop to the car?

    • The supplied 3M tape is helpful in adding some additional support to the hood scoop while helping eliminate any possibility for vibration and shaking. However, we highly recommend installation this hood scoop with the supplied hardware (which will include drilling) to ensure the scoop is entirely secured to the hood. Unfortunately we have not used or tested cyanoacrylate adhesive with this products so we are unable to attest if this would be successful.

Is this scoop an exact replica of the Ford Factory Scoop that came as part of the GT appearance package?

    • The MMD Pre-Painted Hood Scoop is not a direct replica of the factory hood scoop. These hood scoops are a different dimension than the original OEM hood scoops equipped on applicable Mustangs.

Ok I'm totally confused. I see TWO different drill template designs here. One that attaches to the spray nozzles on your hood and one that is in two pieces that you have to do some measuring. Worth every cent!

I chose MMD hood scoop for its lines that flow with the lines of S197 hood and grille. The quality of the product is nothing else than excellent! I have 69-style Stallion hood, therefore I had to modify the scoop to make it fit. But with factory hood fitment promisses to be ideal.

Review from MMD Hood Scoop - Pre-painted (05-09 GT, V6)

      Great look!

First lets start with the positives. Color match was spot on, adds a nice aggressive retro look to stock vehicle. Installation would have been a breeze if I was able to find a 1/2 inch drill bit. Was thinking it was a bit large but you will need it for sure. Having a second pair of hands will help. While driving I can notice a small slight gap in the back left side of scoop. I made sure it was flush with hood but notice the tiny gap only when in drivers seat but other than that you cant tell. I get way more looks with the scoop than I did without.

Review from MMD Hood Scoop - Pre-painted (05-09 GT, V6)

      Can't trust the template

First let me say, once installed, it looks great. Because of having to re-engineer and modify on the fly, this took several hours to complete, but it should normally be able to be completed in a couple of hours, or less. HOWEVER, be aware, the drill template does not match the scoop, and installation hardware is not representative of the the instructions included, or on line. After laying out the drill template, checking to make sure it was completely smooth, and cringing as I drilled holes in the hood, and then screaming when the clip studs were no where close to the holes, it was discovered the template hole locations were 3/8" wider and 1/4" longer than the actually mounting tab locations of the scoop. I would recommend after laying out the template on your hood, install the clip studs on the scoop and test fit the location to the template. Correct accordingly before you drill. Another issue was with the instructions and the specified holes sizes. The instructions state, "after drilling the four, 1/4" holes for the clip studs from the top side, to then drill the front two holes from 1/4" to 1/2", from the underside. First, this is only to be a clearance hole through the stamped reinforcement rib on the underside of the hood, not all the way through the actually outer hood skin. Second, a 1/2" hole is not big enough. The washers provided with the hardware are 5/8" dia., and the clip studs are not long enough to extend through the outer skin and reinforcement rib. The front clearance holes from the underside should be 3/4". If you use the back 2 mounting holes as an example, both 1/4" drilled holes center up in 3/4" factor stamped holes in the stamped reinforcement rib. You're duplication this.

Review from MMD Hood Scoop - Pre-painted (05-09 GT, V6)

      Have no fear!

Once I got past the nervous fear of drilling holes in my perfect (not perfect) hood, it was easy as pie to install this scoop. Now my hood is truly perfect and my car is a complete California Special. Only thing I would suggest: when you get to step 4A, I would suggest drilling out the front holes a bit bigger than the 1/2" that the instructions call for. This way the washer will fit into the hole and around the bolt.

Review from MMD Hood Scoop - Pre-painted (05-09 GT, V6)

      Best Ever!

Got this to bring out the aggressive look of my '09 Stang (wasn't equipped). This scoop has a more aggressive hood line than the original GT\CS design even though it is supposed to be a direct copy....which I LOVE! Install was straightforward and template worked out good. Fitment was great....all laid down beautifully once I tightened up the nuts and seated the 3M adhesive strips to the 3M promotor. Note: The 3M Adhesive Promotor will clean off your painted surfaces easily using rubbing alcohol. Paint matches perfectly. Scoop mounts in the perfect area of the hood to show off the aggressive lines! Loving it!

      Had chip out of edge

Was sent fast and packaged nicely. Once I took it completely out and inspected there was a small nick out of the edge. Had to happen before it was packaged because it was packaged great. Figured I could live with it so I didn’t have to wait to send back and receive a new one so went ahead and painted it. Looks good and is good quality but I know it’s prob gonna drive me crazy with the gap where the chip is. I do think AM should inspect items before packaging them and sending them off though.

      Easy to paint and instal

Make sure that you sand the middle portion down so it’s smooth before you paint. There was some sort of imperfection like ring in the middle that I didn’t smooth out and it stood out after painting...my fault for not noticing it but why would they ship it out with the imperfection. Other than that the instal was easy except the back isn’t 100 flush...looks good though!

Looks good but template is way off!!

      1. Ok so this is a honest review and 1st thing I have to say is why are they including a template that is not even close to where the holes need to be drilled really? You are drilling holes in the hood of your car this has to be dead Nuts on, I’m just glad I read reviews saying measure before you drill otherwise you will be drilling 8 holes in your hood instead of 4. I have picture of template that where the holes actually have to be on it I wish I could post picture here. 2. One of the 4 clip on bolts was bad also it was not attached to clip so I had to do some major improvising there. 3. Installed the vent piece to the hood and for some reason one side did not fit all the way up into the scoop and once it’s stuck good luck trying to remove it, so now one side has a gap in front where scoop doesn’t touch hood for about 3” it’s really bothering me too. 4. It does look good once installed so that’s why I gave it 2 stars instead of one. Whatever you get from this make sure you measure and modify template before you drill into you mustangs hood!
