    Review & Install Video

Hey I’m Justin with, and I’m checking out an aggressive 2013 inspired part for your early S197, I’m talking about MMD’s hood vent louvers available pre painted, or matte black, fitting all 05-09 Mustangs. Whether you’re looking for an over the top show part for your car or a functional factory inspired part like these hood vents, MMD definitely has you covered, they’re the leader in producing unique styling parts specifically for your late model Mustang. To check out more stuff from MMD including their 2013 GT project car, you have to subscribe to our YouTube channel if you haven’t done so already, simply by clicking on the banner below. When you ask a lot of Mustang fans what they prefer most with the new 13 and 14 Mustangs, of course a lot of people point to the addition of the new cool tail lights, but a lot of people point out the functional hood vents on the 13 and 14 GTs. Raxiom took care of the need with the 05-09 tail lights modelled after the 13-14 tail lights, and now MMD has answered the call with these functional hood vents available for all 05-09 Mustangs. The vents are sold in sets of two and are made from extremely durable automotive grade ABS plastic. As I mentioned at the beginning of this video, you do have the option of picking up these vents in a color matched pre painted version, like the grabber blue vents here, or if you want the vents to stand out a little bit more, you can pick up the matte black version which is currently installed on our 06 GT behind me. You guys should all know the deal by now with our pre painted parts, our in house paint booth uses the same base and clear coat that Ford uses in their factories, making for an excellent color match right out of the box. We do carry about every color available for the 05-09 cars but if you do just want to make sure we have your color available and in stock then go ahead and click the link below to head back to the product page at Besides the awesome appearance upgrade these vents give your factory hood, it should be mentioned that they are actually functional hood vents allowing all that trapped, hot engine bay air to escape, just like on the 13 and 14 GTs. Opening up the package for the first time you will of course find the vents themselves, in addition to the honeycomb inserts, and all the tape, directions, and supplies needed for the installation. As you may have guessed you will need to do some cutting to fit these vents properly into your factory hood, I know cutting into your hood does sound a little scary but we actually installed these vents into our 06 GT project car behind me, and it really wasn’t that bad at all. You will need to get an angle grinder to make the proper cuts but if you take your time, follow the detailed instructions, you should be wrapped up in a couple of hours from start to finish. As always, please do not hesitate to get in touch with our award winning customer service team, whether it’s about the vents themselves, the pre painting process, or about the actual install they’re only an email or a phone call away. So if you really dig the functional styling of the 13 and up GT hood, and want that same aggressive style for your 05-09 Mustang, then be sure to check out MMD’s hood vent louvers, available pre painted or matte black, right here at

I purchased the matt black vents to go along with my silver and black scheme on my satin silver V6... Awesome... Installed these in an afternoon with my RotoZip angle grinder attachment and metal cut-off wheel... Take the hood off the car! It's not hard if you have a helper and makes the whole process MUCH easier. I couldn't imagine doing this with the hood still on the car! MEASURE 5 TIMES and cut once! It doesn't hurt to measure as many times as you want to; especially when cutting into a perfectly good hood! I applied overlapping layers of blue painters tape to the hood where I measured out the cuts. Made my marks directly on the applied tape. Then proceeded to cut.. I cut from the top of the hood and then flipped the hood over and finished off the cuts that didn't go all the way through the ribs, from the underside of the hood. This worked very well...! I love the finished look! The car looks much meaner now and the vents are functional. When I shut off the car at the end of the day you can feel the hot air escaping from the vents. I can only imagine that when you are driving the flow of the air over the top of the curved hood must actively suck out hot air from the engine compartment. The only concern I have is with my Ford Racing CAI. The first, front louver of the vent crosses the seal of my CAI. So what I did was trim the plastic on the underside of the vent with a dremel and now the hood and vent closes around the CAI seal. I don't imagine water will be a factor as the CAI box has a drain hole in the bottom and the vent is back enough to not drain directly onto the filter element... But not crazy about that... the passenger side vent also seems to be forward enough to partially drain on top of the fuse cover... Not crazy about that either, but have had no issues after washing car or driving in the rain... the box cover is lipped so I do not believe there is any danger of water getting in the box itself... SO in all... I'm happy with the vents. The appearance and functionality outweigh the drain issues. Just have to pay more attention to cleaning the fuse box cover and CAI box when I detail the car! Other than that water drains right between the strut towers and valve covers to the ground...

      Excellent and functional

I decided to locate the vents in a different location than the instructions . Instead of 12 in. from the rear of the hood I went 8 and instead of 2 1/2 from the side I went 5 inches, which to me looks better both outer and underneath especially.

I just put these vents on my 05 GT and they look outstanding! It was very scary to cut the holes in the hood, but the process worked. One problem to look out for. If you have an AIRAID CAI system on your stang, you will have to trim the air box so when you close the hood, the vent will fit flush on the hood. It took me awhile to figure that out. When my hood was open, it fit fine; but when I close the hood, the vent would raise up about 1/2 inch. This problem was for the drivers side only. Another thing: if you have access to a machine shop, you can fabricate some trim pieces to clean up the under side of the hood. I'm using 3/8 aluminum to do so. Another great product from AM.

Adds an awesome look to my S197

I was a little nervous about cutting into my hood. Once I got started just kept a steady 2 handed grip on the grinder. Not an issue. Once it was finished I couldn't stop smiling. Measure twice, check your measurements, check them a third time, make sure you compare betweent he right and left side, use lots of 2" painters tape, what the heck, measure again for good measure, then get to cutting.

Heat problems, sagging hood blanket problems.

I bought these because my SR Performance twin 62mm trottle body was overheating and causing the check engine light and wrench to light up in my dash. My Vortech V2 supercharger is probably not helping my heat problem. Took only 2 hours, looks great, looking for a way to keep hood blanket from separating, will try double sided tape, hope it works because it is sagging around the new louvers. Any ideas...

These functional hood vents gave my mustang an aggressive look. I get compliments on my car all the time and it usually starts at my hood. Took my mechanic 2-3 hours to install and the pre-painted vents came out perfect! *Keep in mind, if you have a strut mount already installed (like I do) your going to have to cut the vents in order to close the hood*

It Fits 99-04 Hoods, TOO !!!

Fit my 1999 hood perfectly and looks great too !! Not just for 05-12's. Just match the curvature of the the hood louver to the curvature of the hood. If not, one end will lift up and not look good or secure well. These work great. My engine compartment gets so hot between my supercharger, long tubes and all the chrome / aluminum. It took me about 2 hours to install completely. I am also attaching pics. 1999 Chrome Yellow GT vert.

      Awesome Louvers

I contemplate every mod to my '08 GT/CS sometimes for months. Cutting into the hood was something I was having a rough time dealing with. Certainly no room for mistakes. I took it to a speed shop to have it done. Like others mentioned, there's no question that you have to remove the hood, which was no big deal at all. It just takes 2-3 people to do it. Since mine has the heat shield I was surprised to discover all of the extra bracing under the hood after removing the shield. Obviously more to cut through, so prepare for that, as your cut while be deeper than originally anticipated. Love the results!! Especially with the center stock scoop, these louvers really balance the appearance tremendously. Perfect for my car.

Review from MMD Hood Vent Louvers - Matte Black (05-12 GT, V6)

Looks Good, and Compliments the After Market Intake

It's something you want to get right when you cut into your own hood so it took longer than the AM estimated one hour installation time. By itself the louvers keep the engine running cooler. What I found after installing an after market BBK intake is that the intake did not give me the promised 20 horse power increase. It was pleasing to find that after adding the louvers, I had little trouble burning rubber. The negative airflow that the louvers create force more air through the front. The new intake really only offers the "potential" for more air flow. The AM louvers really make it happen. Another thing I noticed is that after driving short distances around town, I would have to turn the car over a few times to get it restarted. Now with the intake and louvers, my Mustang starts right up the first time with a big gulp of air. I wonder why louvers aren't standard. One improvement that could be made is a way to shut them when going through car washes or heavy rain. Under the hood there is a lip about an inch long that could use an ABS plastic tupper ware like lid over it during those wet times. If AM comes up with a solution to close off the louvers, I will definitely check it out.

      Classy, Practical Addition

The functional hood vents have the look, fit and finish of a factory-installed OEM option. Also, the color match is spot-on. Additionally, the fit of the assembled parts to the vents and the fit of the vents to the hood are perfect. One hot suggestion for MMD: How about a offering a bottom vent frame option to hold the hood's insulator in place, creating a finished appearance? I, and others, would "scoop" it up.

      Hood Heat Vents

All I can say for now, is, that they are black with no intention of painting them as my theme is red and black. They came well packaged, have everything and the install instructions on the American Muscle site are good. I would layout the cutting before taking the hood off the vehicle. As I have all the necessary air tools it should only take a couple of hours to get all the cutting and finish work done. My opinion is that they will look fantastic when done!

      even fooled the Ford guys

This is a awesome product, and instillation was very strait forward. I do have to admit that cutting two large holes in the hood of my car with an angle grinder was a bit intimidating, but once I got going, it worked very well. A few pieces of advice, be careful not to touch the grinder itself to the car, even though it is not the blade, it removes paint very quickly. Also, you will create a large amount of VERY fine aluminum dust. This dust gets everywhere and it can also be hard on a paint job, use a good drop cloth and keep the shop vac handy. The day after I installed the vents, I went to the Ford dealer for an oil change, I literally had four Ford techs scratching their heads, trying to remember what 2008 Mustang came with those vents from the factory, they look that good. I absolutely love this product, the quality is excellent and the fit is perfect. The color match is a hair off, but my car is six years old, I don't think it could have been much closer. Thanks American Muscle and MMD, great job!
