Hey I’m Justin with AmericanMuscle.com, and I have with me a couple of LED third brake light options from Raxiom, fitting your 99-04 Mustang. Raxiom’s whole philosophy is that lights just aren’t for seeing but also for being seen, so with that in mind they produce a wide variety of stylish and unique lighting for your Mustang, all backed by an industry leading full 2 year warranty. The two lights I have with me here are Raxiom’s smoked and chrome option, and they’re designed to completely replace the factory third brake light located in the trunk lid of your New Edge Mustang. As for the styling differences, I think you can see it’s pretty obvious, the smoked option is available here on the site and it adds some of that dark aggressive styling to the rear end of the car, that works especially well with a set of dark smoked tail lights, or even a blacked out rear deck lid panel like we have installed on our 2000 V6. That chrome styling however will look good on its own, and add some of that clean styling to the rear end of the car. Besides the styling differences, I’d say the biggest feature with both these options, is that they replace the dull, dated, and possibly burned out factory third brake light, and replace it with a series of bright, modern LED bulbs. Not only does this look a million times better but it also increases the visibility, which should help your safety in return. Since the Raxiom housings are made to original factory specifications using OEM quality materials, the fit and finish is perfect as you might expect, because of this the install should be pretty straightforward, and only take you about 30 minutes from start to finish, using nothing but a 10mm socket and your own two hands. So if you’re looking to replace the old and tired third brake light on your New Edge with a modern piece that utilizes LED lighting, then be sure to check out the smoked or chrome option from Raxiom, right here at AmericanMuscle.com

Look great but install is a pain
Definitely an upgrade from the stock light. I installed this one on my ‘99 as my stick light was very faded. The installation was more difficult than other have described. Had to file down the LED connectors and also used a flathead screwdriver to loosen up the bulb sockets. Once installed, it works fine and looks great!Helpful (0)

Looks good - a bit of a pain to install
I had a mess of a time installing, not because there's a problem with this item, but because I had trouble removing the existing brake light chassis. The thing is, the nuts on the screws are so tight that one of them was tighter than the connection of the screw to the light chassis itself, meaning the screw would spin in place in its hole without making any progress removing the nut. It came out of the other end where it's connected to the light (it's not supposed to), and I had to drill several holes in that screw to remove it from the car so the new light can go in. Just a warning - unexpected things may happen when modifying a car this old. Another problem that I can probably attribute to this item is the connection of the new lights to the old light sockets is extremely difficult to push in. I installed this at night and looked at the new brake light in a mirror to make sure they turned on. One thing I'll say is they're not really that bright - though definitely visible. Might not be the best attention-grabbing 3rd brake light if you're concerned about safety.Helpful (0)

Good looking product. The middle two bulb housings would not latch tight so I had to modify the amount of lip on them both to get them to latch right. Other than that good looking product.Helpful (0)

Performance of third brake light
The update to LED looks great. The time of installation was around 30 minutes and used the existing wiring harness. The smoked smoke lens looks great on my black 2002 mustang.Helpful (1)

Doesn't always work
It doesn't always work when I hit the breaks and doesn't come on most times when I turn the lights on but when it does it looks pretty cool. If you can figure out how to get it to work 100 of the time I'd say it'd be a great replacement for the factory light and give the car a more modern look.Helpful (2)

Does it come with a new housing? My third brake light is old and dirty. Does this one come with a new housing or only the led sockets to install in the old housing?
This 3rd Brake Light is actually a replacement housing with LED plugs. The LED plugs get connectedinto your original wiring harness and your stock reverse bulb gets reused. Hope this helps!
Hi, Can you tell me what makes this one DOT compliant and not the Axial brand? Thanks!
The Raxiom Smoked LED Third Brake Light was tested and received DOT stampings on the lens. Axial does not display these markings and have not been DOT approved.
Is this plug and play or do you have to purchase the fuse to make the leds work from stock?
This light will be a plug and play kit and will not require any modifications to get installed on your 99-04 Mustang.
Can you use stock bulbs if you don't want LESs ? Looks like a hole for the bulb holder
With the Raxiom Smoked LED Third Brake Light the LEDs are already integrated into the light. You would not be able to used the stock bulbs
Why is hard to push the prongs into the socket? Is this normal or do I need to force them in? I do not want to break them.
When installing the Raxiom Smoked LED Third Brake Light the connections will be tight to alleviate issues with the lamp disconnecting while in use, since there are wires which will exert some pressure on the socket.
For assistance in terms of installing this 3rd Brake light we do have this install guide for you here. https://www.americanmuscle.com/3rd-brakelight-9904-black-cust-install.html You should be able to pull the wires out carefully from the circular plugs and twist the bulb's to release them. Unfortunately, Raxiomhas not informed us if they will be making the third brake light for the 2003-2004 cobra models.
At this point we do not have any information about future production on a product like that.
While the Raxiom Smoked LED Third Brake Light may look close it will not fit your 2003 Cobra.
Unfortunately this is more of an opinion based question. In my opinion I think it would look great but I would recommend you check out some of our customer's photos posted below to see how it would look.
Yes, and it's a perfect fit.
No, this product is prebuilt and has the LEDs built in.
