Review & Install Video

Hey everyone I’m Justin with, taking a look at a mod that’s sure to freshen up the front end of your New Edge Mustang, while adding the aggressive stylings of a smoked headlight, talking about these smoked projector headlights for all 99-04 Mustangs. These headlights feature a quality black housing with a dark smoke lens for a stealthy, aggressive appearance. They also feature the sleek modern stylings of a true projector headlamp which not only look killer, but also improve your night time visibility as well. Overall the kit should install in roughly two hours using standard hand tools, however if you do encounter problems or need some assistance you can always reference the install video located on this page. Remember whenever you install a new set of headlights you want to make sure they’re adjusted properly so you’re getting the best vision possible without blinding oncoming traffic. All you’ve got to do is follow the aiming procedure located in the install video on this page. So if you’re looking to put the new back in New Edge Mustang, you’ll definitely want to check out these smoked projector headlights for your ride.

Modern Design. Give your 1999-2004 Mustang a new look with a set of Axial projector headlights. These Mustang Projector Headlights have an aggressive black housing design and smoked lens that flows nicely into the lines of the "New Edge" Mustangs.

Superior Lighting. The Axial projector lenses light up the road ahead with a bright focused beam of light that not only looks great, but improves your night visibility. The lights feature a pre-wired harnesses and connector that plugs directly into your existing wiring harness for an easy installation.

DOT Approved. Equipped with H3 and H1 bulbs for high/low beams this pair of Mustang Headlights are DOT (Department of Transportation) approved for legal street use under compliance # QR1300029.

Bulb application. These Axial Projector Headlights include H3 bulbs for low beams and H1 bulbs for high beams. AmericanMuscle recommends high quality H3 and H1 replacement bulbs from Raxiom and Sylvania. See the drop down menu option above to select a new set of bulbs to go with your new headlights.

HID kit Can I install my HID light kit on this set of headlights? I like the way these headlights look and would consider buying. I have a pair of after market HID kit with a plug and play adapters and the bulbs are 30000k Bulbs( the color of the light is violet).

  • You should have no problem installing a set of aftermarket HIDs into these lights. We've had lots of customers do it without any issue.

My headlights are starting to haze/peel after a few summers outside, can I remove the smoked tint? Is it a vinyl or painted on tint? Has anyone done this before with headlights that we're purchased already smoked

  • It is a painted on clear tint, not a vinyl, it may be possible to re tint these headlights of taken to a body shop or custom vinyl/design shop.

Have there been any reports of peeling on the lenses after a year of use?

  • We have not received any reports of early failure of the lens smoke/tint on the Axial Smoked Projector Headlights.

When buying a HID adaptor kit can you just buy the low beam for the projector

  • The Axial Smoked Projector Headlights include H3 bulbs for low beams and H1 bulbs for high beams. If you would like to upgrade your low beams as an HID or LED kit since this headlight will no longer be a Bi-beam, you would be correct. Only for the low beam H3 bulb, if you would like to upgrade this bulb.

Is there any way you could make a video on how to install hids or LED bulbs in these housings? It'd be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

  • Well HIDs are a very different/specific setup, so there is no guide to set HID bulbs up because that would be impossible. These headlights require H3 and H1 bulbs, of which we do not have any LED options as well. So as far as what we offer you can only do incandescent.

How do you change the bulbs in these and will they accept led and hid bulbs?

  • These headlights will accept LED and HID bulbs, though certain bulbs may require you to make some modifications.

    Black Projector Headlights

Look really good in my car...03 Mustang GT...very bright at night...very easy installation, pull two pins and the headlight slides right out. Haven't had to change any bulbs yet, so I can't comment on that. I see others are saying the low beams are horrible, I don't know I must have been lucky cause my low beams are very bright and my high beams light up the whole road, and are really bright.

    Black Projector Headlights

I just finished the install of these lights. The good, I will say they look very nice on my car. The bad, very disappointed in product documentation, and lack of instructional materials provided for install. Zero information contained in package for installation, the website video is uninformative at best. The lights came pre-installed with bulbs and the HIGH beam are almost impossible to change out. I was able to replace the low beams, with replacement bulbs 8k. As another reviewer has mentioned the flush fit of the lights required modifying, actually removing the plastic pin cups, I didn't try that, but will later. I had to use a dremel tool to make clearance for the backplate to fit correctly. Overall, great looks with the lights, but extremely unhappy with the available installation materials, which didn't exist.

    could go both ways

i have a cobra and a gt. buy two sets of these and unless you have a cobra bumper, they don't look good. i would not tell anyone with a gt to purchase these... check out the pictures, with the cobra bumper (circle for lights) it goes well. but with the GT bumper it looks tacky. i removed the after 5 minutes..

    Noticably Dimmer

Since I live in a pretty dense City, I haven't been able to use the brights other than in my garage. When they're on "regular" mode though, they are noticably dimmer than the original factory lamps. That said, they are bright enough and they look freakin' cool (which is WAY MORE IMPORTANT than blinding headlamps), so I'm ok with them. I may swap out the bulbs for something brighter if necessary in the future, but the housing wins in my opinion, because they walk the line between "old school" and the full-on "nutty professor HID projector goggles" I almost bought.

    Not a good replacement

Installation in the car was fine with a little effort, but replacing the bulbs is nearly impossible. I've had these in for a few months now. The lights were manufactured incorrectly with the high beam and low beam reflectors in the opposite locations. The low beam buld should be the one with the wire pigtail attached. That would give you a chance at replacement. Alignment is totally off since the low beam does not align with the high beam. Not at all what I wanted or expected.

    03 Mach 1

If your mustang is a few years old and you think the headlights might be peeling, or scuffed or delaminating, they are and these are great upgrades at better than OEM prices. The difference is clear and very noticeable. 1.If you dont know how to seal your lights watch the video. Do your fog lights also if you havent already blown bulbs due the fishbowl effect. 2. use multiple strips of 2" packing tape to cover the fresh silicone so you can install immediately. 3. Use the old 1157 TS bulb if you dont want to wait for the trip to the store, the H1 and H3 purchase is not necessary immediately as the new units came with bulbs installed. Plug and play. Negative: The new light assemblies are not made to exacting specs, they dont fit totally perfect, and so the retainer clips have to be slightly forced in. We'll see if this causes breaking of the slots later

    eh they're ok

I loved the smoked look and the high beams are really bright. The low beams are terrible and even worse when it rains. So if it's dark and rainy, vision is almost zero : The high beams are near impossible to reach though so I havent been able to change them out.

    Great Value

Bought these to replace my sun damaged and cracked OEM headlight assemblies. Just taking them out of the box they felt very high quality and thankfully were to install, partially due to the factory design but also that it came with an adapter harness for the headlights and also utilized the factory turn signal bulb and harness. Even at night they are quite a bit brighter than my horribly damaged stock headlights. My only problem with them is the stock headlights are TERRIBLE. I mean, they are so bad it should be illegal to provide those bulbs with them. I drove at night with them once before switching to the "upgrade" Raxiom Performance bulbs (which are not worth getting in my opinion, but they are better than these stock lights...) because I could hardly see down the road! All in all though, a very good upgrade and would recommend to any New Edge owner. Just be sure to get some better bulbs with this before driving at night.

    Cool appearance/fair practical use

These headlights look very nice and blend very well with black rims on a white body. However, they do not aim very well. The projectors have a shadow or line at top that cut off any light. When the projectors are properly aimed, the bright lights are way to high. I finally found a reasonable mix but disappointed in the low beam projectors. High beams work nice. One other point is that you will lose peripheral lighting that you had with stock lights. Which cuts your vision when turning a corner at night.

    Great Lights. BULBS ARE REVERSED!!!

Great Lights. Went on easy. Fit well. Look fantastic. High and low beams are switched up on here though. Highs are the H1 bulbs and lows are the H3. Wish i wouldve known because i was going to use my HIDs that fit H1 but now i cant. Still, the sylvania bulbs are quite nice.

    Look good. But very loose

These lights look good on the car but don't line up the same on the road. Always getting flashed from other drivers because the fit is loose and the lights rattle all over the road. Not sure how to tighten them up to alleviate the rattle; therefore I would not buy again, or recommend anyone to buy these unless you want to get angry driving down the highway every night seeing your lights flicker and bounce all over the street signs...

    Best looking headlight for 99-04!

I absolutely love this headlight set. They are a clean set that fit as you would expect from an OE replacement headlight. Visibility is great despite any worries about the smoked housing. I ran them with the included bulb and the Raxiom upgraded bulb and I have no complaints about either. I get more compliments on my car now with these headlights installed on my car.
