Review & Install Video

This is the SR Performance Aluminum One Piece Driveshaft for Automatic 2005 to 2010 V6 Mustangs. The '05 to '10 V6 Mustangs came from the factory with a two-piece driveshaft, which is inherently gonna have some weaknesses. This Aluminum One Piece Driveshaft from SR Performance is gonna be a good option for anyone with an automatic V6. We're gonna get rid of those weaknesses for performance, driveability, or just piece of mind reasons. This is currently the only option available for the '05 to '10 V6, which makes it the most affordable option. So if you're looking for a one-piece driveshaft for your '05 to '10 V6, this is what you're gonna wanna check out. And I'll talk more about this later, but the install here is gonna be a two out of three wrenches in the difficulty meter, and take about two hours time. A one piece driveshaft is a huge upgrade over the factory two piece driveshaft for a few reasons. An aluminum one piece driveshaft will be stronger. It's gonna shed some extra pounds from your Stang, about 29 pounds to be exact, and improve driveability. This is gonna be stronger because you're eliminating any inherently weak spot in the factory driveshaft due to the two piece design. And you're also gonna be using stronger materials all the way around. Keep in mind that the driveshaft is made from four-inch certified 6061 aluminum tubing. It also has 1330 series U-Joints. When it comes to weight savings, let me remind you that these are pounds that'll be shaved directly off of your Mustang's rotational mass. When you take that much weight off of your drive train, you're gonna immediately notice a few things. Faster revs and better throttle response and even some faster quarter mile times. You'll also notice that the one piece driveshaft will eliminate those vibrations that you commonly find with the factory two piece driveshaft. So that's another plus side here. So overall, you're looking at improvements such as faster revs, better throttle response, and less vibrations or clunking during driving. I mentioned earlier that this is one of the more budget-friendly options when it comes to upgrading your driveshaft. You're gonna expect to spend under $750 for this option. SR Performance does have an aluminum one piece driveshaft for manual cars as well. So if you have a manual transmission, you're gonna wanna check that one out. As far as the installs goes for this, I said earlier that this is gonna be a two out of three wrenches in the difficulty meter. And you're gonna expect to spend about two hours getting this installed. I will say that you should have some knowledge or someone to help you that's done this before. I wouldn't really recommend this as a job for the first-time wrencher. You're gonna need a handful of tools to get the job done including a torque wrench and, as usual, a lift will be your best bet here. But the job can be done on a jack and jack stands as well. Don't plan on dropping your exhaust from the mid-pipe bag, and that's gonna give you access to drop the driveshaft. There's a factory driveshaft safety loop that you need to get out of the way. And then you just have your bolts at both the front and the rear of the driveshaft to break free. Before you break those bolts free, I would mark the driveshaft, though. Once the stock one is out, you can install the pinion plate adapter on the rear of the differential pinion flange, and get the new driveshaft into the car with the pinion flange end first. Of course, a second set of hands can help you remove and install the driveshafts since this can be a little bit hard to do on your own. That's gonna wrap things up for the SR Performance Aluminum One Piece Driveshaft for Automatic 2005 to 2010 V6 Mustangs. And as always, you can check it out more online right here at

Ask a Question

Could this extend the durability of my 7.5 rear end? I know it reduces weight and rotational mass needed, but would it also make my rear end "stronger" by relieving some of the stress put on it so my rear end wont break as easily?

  • The stock 2-piece driveshaft was prone to failure at high speeds for obvious reasons.. When I upgraded to the one piece it did help to improve response, but in theory yes it is exhibiting less weight, however can also improve rotation therefore actually making the rear-end gears work "harder"- however there should be no concern for reliability based on the application I'm running. Good luck

I have a 2006 v6 mustang I broke my rear end so i replace my 7.5 to an 8.8 rear end and bought an cobra flange but the drive shift is too short what will I have to do? Buy a longer drive shaft?

  • You will need to purchase the longer GT driveshaft to complete your swap.

What speed will I be able to do safely?

  • When using the SR Performance Aluminum One Piece Driveshaft, this driveshaft will be safe at any speed attainable by the car. These are tested at high RPM's to ensure vibration free performance, and strength at high speeds.

Does the rubber covered slip joint go to the back of the transmission?

  • The flexible joint should be attached to the differential.

if i have an 8.8 rear end swap on my 2005 v6. when i swapped it came with a cobra flange and was a direct bolt on installation and the instructions said that i would be able to use my v6 driveshaft. so would i be able to use this

  • This will be able to work with your 8.8 rear end swap on your 2005 V6 model Mustang as it will be a direct bolt on.

I have a 2006 4.0 with an 8.8 running a shelby connection I have a 2006 4.0 with an 8.8 running a Cobra 8.8 Pinion Flange to allow the stock auto 2 piece driveshaft. Is there any reason this would not fit? I see that just using an 8.8 would cause issues but I got the complete axle set up to be used in my car.

  • If your stock one works then this should work as well. Its the same as stock, but its just one piece and much lighter.

    Works great

The installation was done in a couple of hours and I’m having no issues. My only advice is not to bother with a Driveshaft loop. The recommended one would not fit. I’m not planning on racing my Stang.

Drive shaft was super easy to install. Recommend using a impact. But other then that quality was great and just what i was looking for. And when u pull the old one out and see that the new was looks short have one person pull one side of drive shaft as you pull the other way and you should get the right length thanks AM

    Jury not out yet

Easy to install, just seems that balance is not what I expected. Still checking on a few things. Still have a small vibration that I cannot pinpoint. However, the overall transfer of power to the rear has definitely become more positive. I.E. I can chirp the tires much better than before.

Uninstalled the old heavy driveshaft in the morning and installed the aluminum piece when the UPS guy arrived in the afternoon. Install is easy; one person can install it if you have the patience and strength. Simple hand tools such as a ratchet wrench, a portable propane torch (heat to help remove bolts), hammer (tap near the bolts to loosen them), and Loctite thread locker (for reinstalling the bolts) is pretty much all you need. I couldn't use my impact gun cause of clearance issues. I had to disconnect the exhaust x-pipe to remove the old driveshaft and install the new driveshaft as well. After installation I didn't notice much doing spirited driving. It's probably cause of my other mods plus the 93-octane race tune. However, when I'm at wide open throttle, you can truly feel the HP and torque that has been freed up due to this driveshaft and it kept a geeky smile on my face every time I'm on the throttle. I love it! Things that I also noticed after installation: Shifting is smoother and annoying clunking or whining noise disappears. I highly recommend this product; it's a great upgrade that increases performance and reliability.

    Amazing Improvement

This is a must have part for anyone running an 05-09 V-6! It was a fairly straight forward install, but I would like to point out to anyone running a full flowmaster system (i.e. the Force II Cat-back) you will have to unbolt the mufflers and the rear support in order to drop the exhaust down far enough to install this. It is much thicker than the stock driveshaft, but I don't have any clearance issues and mine is lowered in SR Performance springs, Tokico Shocks/Dampers and I have the Flowmaster Force II Cat-back exhaust system with long tubes and no cats. Serious upgrade in acceleration and response.

    All in fun

I put a 2011 8.8 rear end with 4.11 gears and made the tranny hum come to find out the original drive shaft was unbalanced so I went with the aluminum drive shaft. It was lighter, balanced and know more tork to the rear wheels. very happy with this product

Easy install + peace of mind

So we knocked this install out in about 90 mins, two people with 2 jack stands and 2 jacks just from one side of the car.. The only difficulty doing it this way is you must lower the car and roll it slightly forward then raise it back up to get to the top bolt. The nice part, no exhaust removal necessary! The design is great, strong, and real clean looking. I do notice a better response time, and no more "clunking" when shifting from drive to reverse. I added this to shed some weight and wanted a stronger shaft to accommodate the extra power of the recent supercharger add-on.
