Review & Installation Video

What’s up everyone, Justin from AmericanMuscle.com, here with a cure to that mushy clutch pedal, and that sticky clutch cable on your ride. I’m talking about this adjustable clutch kit for all 96-04 Mustangs. Simply put, this kit is going to make your car shift like new again by replacing and reinforcing some of the crucial components responsible for getting your car into gear properly and smoothly. The first and most obvious part of this kit is the brand new fully adjustable clutch cable which replaces your old gummed up factory cable. Now over time your clutch cable picks up all kinds of dirt and grime, making for inconsistent pedal feel. As you can see this new cable slides easily, and without any effort whatsoever, and when paired with other kit components, makes for a smooth pedal feel and full adjustability. The adjustability I’m talking about is made possible thanks to this firewall adjuster. This part makes life a whole lot easier when it comes to adjusting your clutch, thanks to the fact that you don’t have to crawl under your car anymore to do so. The new clutch cable will run through this piece mounted on your firewall and simply by turning this knob you can adjust the length of your clutch cable. Now this will also give you much more precise control over your clutch pedal engagement point to better suit your style of driving. The star of this kit without a doubt is the Billet aluminum double hook clutch quadrant. Your clutch cable runs through this little piece bearing the brunt of all those hard shifts. Now your stock quadrant is made from cheap plastic which can flex or even break causing mis-shifts especially when using heavier duty clutches and pressure plates. This Billet aluminum piece totally eliminates the cheap plastic, and is designed to hold up to even the hardest shifts. Installing this kit requires you to remove your factory clutch quadrant and cable, although it’s nothing more complicated than removing a few bolts and snaking some cables, you do have to crawl underneath your car making it somewhat of a time consuming install that should take you a couple of hours. Now we here at AmericanMuscle always recommend installing this kit especially when using aftermarket clutches. It’s a simple peace of mind that will make your life a whole lot easier, trust me. If you’re experiencing a mushy clutch pedal, mis-shifts or an overall poor shifting experience, then this clutch adjuster kit for your 96-04 Mustang will have your car shifting like new all over again.

Improves Pedal Feel. If you're tired of the work out you're getting from your stock clutch pedal, this SR Performance adjustable clutch cable is your answer. High quality materials like a stainless steel inner cable, a low friction lining, and a high-durometer fire wall bushing mean it takes less pressure to engage your clutch, resulting in faster shifts and an overall better driving experience in your Pony.

Adjustable. When used with an aluminum clutch quadrant, this cable will allow you to adjust your pedal's engagement height - a great way to personalize your 'Stang so you can think less about shifting and more about driving.

Application. This new SR Performance adjustable clutch cable is designed specifically to be a direct bolt-on for all 1996 to 2004 Mustangs, including the V6, GT, Bullitt, Mach 1, and SVT Cobra models.

Technical Note. This adjustable clutch cable requires the use of an after-market solid clutch quadrant and firewall adjuster.

Will this cable work? So I have previously bought a cable kit with the fire wall adjuster and the billet quadrant but i noticed in the picture that the cable has the fire wall mount where my firewall adjuster will be. Will this cable work with my set up? Or will i have to do some fabrication to take that firewall mount off? Thank you for your help -Logan

Ninety8stang

  • All you need to do is take the black rubber part off the firewall mount and cut off some small plastic pieces, i was able to do it with a box knife. After you do that it should go right into your firewall adjuster.

Had my steeda for a couple years and finally came apart so I bought this to save a few bucks and regret it. I have a spec stage 2 clutch so it's nothing extreme and this didn't even last 2 weeks. Clutch feel even brand new was horrible. My steeda right before it came apart was smoother than this thing. I went and bought the maximum motorsports cable and it is ridiculously nice. Definitely worth the extra money

    Stretched

My factory cable was stretched and i couldnt shift in gears! I installed the cable and it was amazing. But now it feels the same as the old and have trouble sliding into gears? Should it stretch from heat that easily?

When upgrading to this adjustable cable, you also need to combine that with a solid clutch quadrant in order to be able to properly adjust the engagement. If you haven't done so, I would highly recommend adding one. It should help greatly. If you have any other questions, please don't hesitate to give us a call - we'd be happy to help.

This is the second cable I've installed in 3 years. The first cable just snapped without warning. My 2003 Mach is stock with a OE replacement style clutch. I only put about 8k miles on it a year. I lubed this cable up before I installed it so maybe it will last me a bit longer.

It feels so much better i installed a new clutch on my car but the clutch still felt weird it was getting stuck on the engagement point so i went ahead and got the sr clutch cable and its not getting stuck anymore and it feels much better than the stock cable even now with the new clutch.

    Great product

Having a stock clutch and a worn out cable making it difficult to shift can be a pain. For the price of this cable and ease of install paired with the quality and adjustability makes all the difference in drivability. I would recommend this to anyone. Great product. Very pleased

Cheap, but I would not buy again

July 2014 Put this cable in with a new quadrant and firewall adjuster and stage 1 exedy clutch. It lasted til today 9/3/16. Had around 20,000 miles on it. It's been stretching since it was installed to where I thought there was a problem with the tranny because of difficulty shifting. But no it was the cable and it broke at the fork. So spend the money and get one, like the original, that will last. The original lasted 150,000 miles and was still good when I took it out.

    An okay cheap clutch cable

It's an okay cable if you're looking for something cheapep than the others for a stock clutch and mild driving habits. If you're running a heavier clutch setup or drive hard then you're going to want something stronger as this will stretch and break on you.

    Not happy

I installed this cable when I put a spec stage 1 clutch in. My car is a daily driver, with this cable it felt like a stage 3 clutch ment for the drag strip. The first cable lasted about a year, the second six months, and the third two weeks. The cables were all installed by a shop, and nothing was wrong with my clutch the cables just stretched and snapped. I recommend if you want the best feel, invest in the maximum motorsports high performance clutch cable. I recently installed it and it is 100 times better.

    Needs a Break-In Period

I usually don't write reviews but i see some people reviewed this cable negatively and i thought i'd share my input. I bought this cable because my clutch would sometimes stick and i figured the cable would be the issue so i ordered it. When it arrived i inspected it and the cable looks to be of good quality. The cable slides freely but the rubber grommet that came with it is garbage. I have a firewall adjuster so i scrapped it but if youre not using an adjuster i recommend a better firewall grommet. I pulled the old cable, which was loose when i checked it, and compared the two. The cable and materials themselves seem to match oem quality and the cable slides much more freely then the oem one did. When i installed the cable, it was unbearably stiff and wasn't fun to drive. After about 100 miles it settled in and feels much better than the stock one did. Not only did it get rid of my sticky clutch but it made my throwout bearing squeal go away completely. Every car is different so some might be good to go straight away but if its uncomfortable, give it a bit of time and it should be golden.

    A much needed upgrade!

Like the thicker/heavier steel inner cable. Excellent compliment with the Aluminum Quadrant. Initial Adjustment is much easier. Future adjustments/maintenance should be much easier as well. The aluminum firewall adjuster adds a nice look to the Engine compartment as well. A much improved feel over the weaker stock unit. This is a much needed upgrade now that my 'Stang will be seeing more Track time. Would highly recommend for any manual trans driver, daily or Street/Strip.

    Love it!

At first it was hard because the cable kept slipping off the quadrant when I tried to connect it to the fork. But I eventually got it and works great! Much stronger

    Warning ⚠️ save your money

I've had this cable installed for approximately 5 months, installed from a reputable Mustang engine building Mustang performance shop, it's already on the second click on my firewall adjuster and now my RPM's are hanging again and I need to adjust it again, I've only put 500 KM's on it(I'm Canadian Kilometres here lol), anyway I've never had any issues until they installed this stupid cable, save your money and buy Ford Performance, I have a Ford Performance Clutch and Throwout bearing I should've just kept with them.
