    Video Review & Installation

The Ford Performance flywheel we have here is currently the most affordable 6-Bolt 50-Ounce option in the category for your '81 to '95 manual 5-liter Mustang, hovering right in that mid to low $100 price point. The Ford Performance flywheel will combine that 157-tooth ring gear design along with a cast iron construction that's gonna weigh in at just north of 20 pounds, making this an excellent stock replacement. Install will obviously involve removal of the transmission, along with that clutch, so the site is going to kick this one up to a full pull three out of three wrenches on the difficulty meter, and about four hours or so from start to finish to get completed. So when shopping for flywheels on the site, the biggest decision you will need to make is whether or not you want to go lighter than stock through an aluminum or chromoly option, which will free up some rotational mass, or just simply go with a factory-style replacement like the cast iron Ford Performance option that we have right here. Now, those lighter options will have a tendency to pull through the revs a little bit quicker, but can be a bit tricky to drive on the street, depending on your setup or your clutch, whereas the heavier iron flywheel that we have here will be extremely strong overall, while also helping to make the car a little bit more streetable, getting the car moving off the line a little bit better, thanks to that stored energy and inertia. But aside from the material difference, some of your other big factors here with the Ford Performance flywheel will be that 6-bolt design specific to the '81 through '95 year range, the 157-tooth ring gear, and then finally that 50-ounce balance. Now just a heads up guys, prior year 302s did have a 28-ounce balance, but from late '81 to '95, they were all 50-ounce balanced from the factory. Now if you have a built engine or maybe planning on building an engine down the road, it really boils down to what internals you plan on using, and what balancer will best go along with that. However, if you're staying stock, internally that is, it's probably just a safe bet to stick with the 50-ounce option that we have here. However, if you do plan on going with something lighter, maybe something forged, maybe a 28-ounce option might be better off, or maybe even going with a zero balance, but that will be up to you and your engine builder. Now as far as your clutch options are concerned, well, most if not all of the stock or aftermarket 10-1/2-inch clutches will work just fine with the Ford Performance flywheel here. But, it is important to point out that '81 through '85 5-liter owners will need to convert that stock 10-inch clutch to a 10-1/2-inch option in order to run this particular flywheel without any issues. As far as your install is concerned, well, this one is pretty obvious, right? Trans needs to come down, along with that clutch, which really isn't the end of the world, but it is good enough to get a full three out of three wrenches on the difficulty meter here on the site, and about four hours or so to complete from start to finish. So, wrapping things up guys, if you're looking for a super affordable factory replacement flywheel for your manual Fox or SN95, be sure to check out the Ford Performance cast iron option right here at americanmuscle.com.

    Description

Peace of Mind. When replacing your clutch you have two options, resurfacing your old stock flywheel, or getting a brand new flywheel. A new flywheel is a much better choice than resurfacing, as the flywheel will dictate how well your clutch will perform, as well as how long it will last.Cast for Strength. This Ford Racing Flywheel is cast from iron for extra strength and features a ring gear of 157 teeth, as well as a six bolt pattern. This is the perfect companion to your new Ford Racing Clutch.Fitment. The Ford Racing Cast Iron 50oz flywheel is a direct replacement for the 1986-1995 5.0 Mustangs and the 1993-1995 Cobras with an engine balanced for 50oz. Will also fit the 1981-1985 5.0 Mustangs when converting the stock 10" clutch to a 10.5" clutch.Technical Note. If you are replacing a Flywheel on a stock application, it would be best to use a 50 ounce flywheel. If the Flywheel will be used on a modified/bored and stroked application a 28 ounce would be ideal. If you are having your engine rebuilt and are unsure what Flywheel to get, please contact your engine builder to confirm which Flywheel is necessary for your application as you have to match the engine's Harmonic Balancer weight with the Flywheel.
