Hey I’m Justin with AmericanMuscle.com, and I’m breaking down JLT’s Next Generation Ram air intake, fitting the 4.6L motor found in all 96-04 Mustang GTs. The first thing to point out is that the JLT ram air is going to be slightly different to other cold air intakes available today. That’s because cold air intakes place the filter in the inner fender well, whereas the JLT ram air utilizes a larger, 9” filter which resides in the engine bay itself, and that is isolated by this textured black ABS plastic heat shield. This intake earns its Ram air name thanks to its design. It forces the air entering the engine bay into the filter itself by capturing the air flow with the black heat shield. This is going to result in more horse power versus your stock air box. How much power exactly? Well, we’re going to find out in a minute but first let’s find out what’s included with the intake. The JLT comes with a textured black ABS plastic intake tube, an ABS plastic heat shield, a massive 4x9 power stack filter, and of course all the hardware and couplers needed for installation. We already grabbed the baseline run with our automatic 2000 GT behind me, so we’re going to get this installed and then do another run to see what kind of gains we can achieve. Getting the JLT installed is a job easy enough for any backyard mechanic to tackle, and should take you roughly an hour from start to finish using basic hand tools. Just so you know, running a performance tune with the JLT is not required, however, in order to get the most out of this intake, we’re going to upload our custom Bama tune, which is going to optimize our spark timings, get those air/fuel ratios right in the sweet spot, and really firm up the shifts here in our automatic. Now that we have the Ram air installed and our tune uploaded let’s turn the rollers one more time and see what the results are. Our baseline run with our automatic 2000 GT gave us 222 horsepower and 259 ft/lbs of torque, with the JLT/Bama combination, we were able to put down 234 horsepower and 277 ft/lbs of torque. Making for a peak gain of 12 horsepower over our baseline numbers, and gains of 22 horsepower and 18 ft/lbs of torque throughout the curve. The Next Generation ram air intake from JLT is a low cost, no tune required that gave us some great results here on our 4.6. The best part is, the unique ram air design makes it a breeze to install, and it’s a nice alternative to other intakes available on the market today. Not recommended for 96-98 Gt
This JLT intake is not designed for the 96-98 GT. The intake is too long , and the heat shield will not be usable. But if your not worried about the long install time and absolutely want a intake that does not go through the fender , then this is a good choice. You will need an extra 1" hose clamp.Helpful (8)

I installed the jlt ram air intake and noticed a big diference in horsepower and throttle response would recommend this intake to everyone.Helpful (6)

The little heat shield they include doesn't really fit. Intake fits well with my 75mm accufab TB/Plenum but now it's sucking up hot engine bay air.Helpful (6)

Was looking for a replacement for my fenderwell JLT intake and i made the right decision!! JLT by far best in perfomance (IMO), install was around 1hr, tight fit but once you hit that key on, you can def hear a difference, and can actually hear it sucking air in!! Would def reccommend. Thanks A/M!!Helpful (7)

works for me and was recommended.
Built up motor with parts list from a well-known engine builder of the 2 valve 4.6 motor. Once I had all the parts I could see his logic, ran a 90mm lighting maf, so pretty much a 4 inch intake All the way, and necks down to the bbk 78mm or about 3" the smooth and shorter tubes on the ram air Style will make tuning maf air transfer functions easy, also keeps the air filter out of the water, an issue I have this far down south. note: to use the 90 mm ford lighting maf you will need a 4" to 4" coupler. The supplied coupler to the throttle body will fit, but will need to sit in very hot water for a while and is a fight, but it will fit.Helpful (7)

So much better then my old BBK fenderwell unit
Awesome unit. Fit was a little tight around the edges. Took out my old BBK fenderwell unit (became a eyesore under the hood). Hooked this up with a accufab 75mm t/b and CandL intake plenum all at the same time. Huge difference. For those people wondering like I was, YES IT WILL FIT under a strut tower brace. I have the steeda strut tower brace which I wanted to keep. If you are looking to keep your stang N/A, you cannot go wrong with JLT.Helpful (7)

Overall money well spent but for 96 gt guys maybe the same for 96/98, it's a very tight fit it put the filter right at the back of the headlight nose panel and made it a little difficult to put together, just get another guy to help hold it down while you put it together and while tighten the hose clampsHelpful (7)
Looking to know more about this intake would this intake be better then getting a cold air intake ? would I get better mpg ? more acceleration ? could I still install a throttle body with this installed ? could I still install an upper intake plenum with this installed ?
The power is slightly less with this intake as opposed to a fender well intake, but it's easier to clean and yes you can absolutely add an aftermarket TB and plenum.
will it fit a 2001 bullitt ??
Yes, this will fit a 2001 Bullitt.
Am I able to install this in a 98 V6?
Thank you for your question about the JLT Performance Next Generation Ram Air Intake (96-04 GT). Unfortunately, this intake will not work on a 98 V6. We do have a selection of Cold Air Intakes that will work for your V6. They include BBK Cold Air Intake (94-98 V6), SR Performance Cold Air Intake (94-98 V6) also available in black, and C&L Cold Air Intake w/ 73mm MAF (94-00 V6). Is this intake California approved ?
This JLT Performance Next Generation Ram Air Intake is not approved by the California Air Resources Board.
Will the engine strut bar fit after installation? I'm referring to the engine compartment strut bar that spans from fender well to fender well, over the engine.
Hey bud, I was wondering the exact same thing. I have a 2000 GT with a Steeda strut tower brace, and YES it does fit. Now granted I know your cobra is different, but it does fit with mine. Hope this helps.
I just received your message this morning about a ram air kit for an 02 Saleen S/C, unfortunately we do not have a kit for that year vehicle. If you have nay other questions please let me know! Thanks! Marissa Moore JLT Performance 757-335-1940
