Hey I’m Justin with AmericanMuscle.com, and I’m breaking down JLT’s Next Generation Ram air intake, fitting the 4.6L motor found in all 96-04 Mustang GTs. The first thing to point out is that the JLT ram air is going to be slightly different to other cold air intakes available today. That’s because cold air intakes place the filter in the inner fender well, whereas the JLT ram air utilizes a larger, 9” filter which resides in the engine bay itself, and that is isolated by this textured black ABS plastic heat shield. This intake earns its Ram air name thanks to its design. It forces the air entering the engine bay into the filter itself by capturing the air flow with the black heat shield. This is going to result in more horse power versus your stock air box. How much power exactly? Well, we’re going to find out in a minute but first let’s find out what’s included with the intake. The JLT comes with a textured black ABS plastic intake tube, an ABS plastic heat shield, a massive 4x9 power stack filter, and of course all the hardware and couplers needed for installation. We already grabbed the baseline run with our automatic 2000 GT behind me, so we’re going to get this installed and then do another run to see what kind of gains we can achieve. Getting the JLT installed is a job easy enough for any backyard mechanic to tackle, and should take you roughly an hour from start to finish using basic hand tools. Just so you know, running a performance tune with the JLT is not required, however, in order to get the most out of this intake, we’re going to upload our custom Bama tune, which is going to optimize our spark timings, get those air/fuel ratios right in the sweet spot, and really firm up the shifts here in our automatic. Now that we have the Ram air installed and our tune uploaded let’s turn the rollers one more time and see what the results are. Our baseline run with our automatic 2000 GT gave us 222 horsepower and 259 ft/lbs of torque, with the JLT/Bama combination, we were able to put down 234 horsepower and 277 ft/lbs of torque. Making for a peak gain of 12 horsepower over our baseline numbers, and gains of 22 horsepower and 18 ft/lbs of torque throughout the curve. The Next Generation ram air intake from JLT is a low cost, no tune required that gave us some great results here on our 4.6. The best part is, the unique ram air design makes it a breeze to install, and it’s a nice alternative to other intakes available on the market today.
