Hey I’m Justin with AmericanMuscle.com and this is my breakdown of JLT’s Next Generation cold air intake, fitting the 4.8L V8 found in all 96-04 Mustang GTs. At first glance, the next gen from JLT is a no nonsense intake, and what I mean by that is, there’s no flashy finishes or big brand names stamped all over it, this thing is all business. Taking a closer look at the intake itself you’ll first notice this massive 4 ¼ “ molded plastic intake tube, that is one piece from the throttle body all the way down to the reusable high flow air filter. In addition you receive the MAF adaptor and also all the hardware and couplers to complete the package. This cold air from JLT places the high flow filter right in the inner fender well to try to take advantage of that cooler, denser air that will ultimately result in more horsepower, how much power exactly? Well, we’ll find out in a minute but first we’ve got to grab a quick baseline run on our automatic 2000 GT behind me. Installing any cold air intake is a task easy enough for the backyard to tackle, all you need is a set of basic hand tools and about an hour’s time to get everything bolted up properly. You should know that running a performance tune with the JLT is not required, but in order to see the biggest gains using this intake, we’re going to upload one of our custom Bama tunes. This tune is going to do a few things for us, it’s going to optimize our spark timings, get our air/fuel ratios right in the sweet spot, and really firm up the shifts on our automatic. Now that we have the kit installed and our tune uploaded here on our JLT, let’s turn the rollers one more time and see what the numbers are. For our baseline run on our automatic 2000 GT, gave us 222 horsepower, and 259 ft/lbs of torque. With our JLT installed and our tune uploaded, we were able to make 235 horsepower and 275 ft/lbs of torque, giving us a peak gain of 13 horsepower over our baseline numbers, and gains of 28 horsepower and 17 ft/lbs of torque throughout the curve. The Next Gen cold air from JLT is a simple and effective no tune intake, that yielded some nice results here on our GT, as well as making a visual improvement under the hood as well.
