Review & Install Video

Hey, guys, Stephanie with AmericanMuscle.com here with the Modern Billet Retro Style 6-Speed Shift Knob for 2011 to 2014 GT and V6 Mustangs. The rally stripe shift knob is a nice shift knob for the MT82 equipped S197s that are looking for a nice round type of shift knob to make a statement with. This obviously isn't a plain shift knob and it's gonna stand out for sure in the interior. A lot of people take advantage of the individualism that a stock shift knob can bring to the interior of a car, and while minor, this shift knob is one of the connecting pieces between the car and the driver so it needs to be comfortable. Now this particular shift knob is black, with a running pony on both sides here that actually has the color of stripes. But there are a few slightly different styles of this particular shift knob. They're all gonna have the six-speed shift pattern, of course, and the running pony on both sides, but there's also a white and chrome version of this as well if this one doesn't suit your taste. While they're all styled differently, they're all inlaid engravings. And the engravings have been polished smooth, which is nice because then you don't have to worry about fading. So there are a ton of different types of material to choose from when you're looking for a shift knob, and material and finish are definitely something to consider because different types of materials have a different type of feel. And you also have to consider how the material will react to temperature changes like the heat of summertime or the cool of wintertime. This group of shift knobs are all made from a resin compound for strength and durability, and they're not as sensitive to heat or cold as other materials. The only outlier is the chrome option since that one is billet aluminum and not resin. The shift knobs also have a one and three-fourths diameter so they're a smaller shift knob. As far as price you can expect to spend right about $50 for one of these. The chrome option does cost a little bit more since it's not a resin compound but billet aluminum instead. There are a handful of different shift knob options that are available on the site if this one isn't doing it for you, and there are different colors, materials, and price points. So the install here is really pretty easy. The new knob will come with a retainer for the shift boot so you don't have to worry about that. If we want to get technical here, the shift knob is very easy to access. So you access your shift knob and remove it. The factory shift knob just comes off easily by using that normal righty, tighty, lefty, loosey rule. You'll want to install your retainer first, so thread that on there until it's touching the shift boot, and then it's just a matter of taking your shift knob and threading it down into place until it gets tight. Now it's probably not going to be sitting straight, so what I would do is turn it backwards about and eighth of a turn. Thread the retainer upwards and then turn the retainer end knob until they're tight. The retainer will act as a jam nut here so the knob won't move, but you can always Loctite it if you want to. Overall this is a one wrench install on our scale here and should take just about five minutes to complete. Wrapping things up here, the Modern Billet Retro Style Shift Knob is a classic cue ball style shift knob with a six-speed shift pattern for the MT82 equipped Mustang. There are a few different designs, they're made from a resin compound, and they're very easy to install. You can check these out more online along with all of the other shift knob options. And for all things Mustang, keep it right here at AmericanMuscle.com.

Does it simply unscrew for the 2011 GT/CS? HI! My GT/CS uses a different throw then the "regular" GT, does it simply unscrew as well or would I have to do some other modifications since it uses a different manual box. Thanks!

  • Yes just simply unscrew your old stock shift knob off and screw the new knob on, it's just like changing a light bulb.

Mine came with the car and it came unscrewed the other day. When I screwed it back in, its upside down. How do I get it back right side up?

  • Hi, You'll want to turn the knob to the left until it's aligned the way you want it then do the same with the shift boot retainer until it's tight.

    6 speed shifter knob

Looks awesome. It's mounted to a Barton short throw shifter. I did put this shifter knob on the stock shifter perfect match. Highly recommend. Install super simple it only minutes

Be careful with the type of boot you have

The knob is great but the retainer does not fit with my boot. Just realized after some investigation that my boot is a 401A shift boot (which has a chrome plastic piece) and not the standard one. The retainer coming with the knob is for the standard boot. If you are in my case expect to buy separately a different retainer.

    Easy install

This was so easy to install and it looks great. Just screw off the old one, screw on the new adjuster section then screw on the knob. There of course was some minor adjustments to make it line up perfectly. The only problem was that you will need to use an adjustable wrench to align it as the size is neither ASE or Metric. As always there was fast shipping from AM.

    Baby shift knob

I was excited when it arrived but extremely disappointed when I opened it. First off the box that held the knob was inside a larger unsealed box. The smaller box holding the knob appeared to have been opened. The shift boot retainer piece was missing. The shift knob itself was extremely small. Not billiard size like a normal one. It felt light and cheap, with sharp corners where to socket was. It fit perfectly in my 2 yr old’s hand. There was also a few scratches, cuts, and almost chips in the finish. Needless to say I was really disappointed and returned it.

    Cool little shift knob

Looks great and easy to install. Didn't end up needing any thread lock. Mine didn't initially screw down in the right position; but like she says in the video, I just unscrewed the boot retainer a tiny bit until it could meet the knob snugly in the right position. Then made sure the knob and retainer were a nice and tight jam nut fit, and it stayed in place.

    Good

Came smaller than expected. However it still looks great, and also shifting is easier with a smaller knob.

Great comfort in the palm of your hand. Warning this does get very cold in the winter so just be ready. Easy to adjust for the right height.

    Great fit

Nice heavy duty shift knob. Really goes well with my interior. Cloud be a little larger, but looks great and feels natural. Would definitely recommend it for a manual shifter.

    Great fit

Before spending big money on a Barton kit, check this out beforehand. It feels much better than the factory knob. Some fiddling needed ti aling the numbers right but a no-tool bolt-on mod? Ill take it

    Modern Throwback Styling

Great easy addition to add a little customisation to the GT/CS. As an official Ford product installation was simple and delivers a clean fit with the OEM shift boot.
