      Video Review & Installation

Hey guys, Stephanie with AmericanMuscle.com, here with a Mishimoto Performance Transmission Cooler for all 1979 and up Mustangs. A transmission cooler offers a big benefit to anyone that's done some performance mods for more power output and/or has a high stall converter. This cooler from Mishimoto is a universal application, so it'll work for any Mustang with a Mishimoto aluminum rad. When do you need a trans cooler? Well, it's safe to say that you can always just add a trans cooler. It's never gonna hurt anything as long as it's installed properly, so it won't be a source of leaks or headaches. You'll really start to need a trans cooler for your Mustang once you have a higher output of horsepower and torque. Even if you have a stock converter still, the higher output from the motor will cause a stock converter to stall higher. The higher stall will heat the fluid more than normal and cause high trans fluid temps. You're also gonna want to look into a trans cooler if you've got a high stall converter, for the same reason that I just mentioned. A higher stall means there's gonna be increased fluid forces and pressure within the torque converter, which is how the fluid temps rise. There are many benefits to keeping lower trans fluid operating temps. Cooler temps are better for the life of the transmission and to keep the balance of durability, consistency, and performance from the trans. But just like too hot is bad, so is too cool. You don't want the trans temps to be too cool either. You run into the same problems there that you do when the fluid is too hot. Consistency and lubrication. And too hot leads to fluid breakdown, and then trans failure. This trans cooler is the basic cooler design. There's no need to reinvent the wheel. It's also lightweight and has a three-eighths push-on fitting which makes for an easy install. But it'll also make it a proper sized fitting so you won't have leaking issues. It has a tube and fin design, and it has universal mounting, so you can use it for any application. As far as price, you're looking at spending under $100 for this cooler. Mishimoto does also have a heavy duty trans cooler that comes with an electric fan, if you think you need something more along those lines. And that's gonna cost about $60 more. So, I wouldn't call the install here difficult. The cooler is going to come with some items to help you mount this, like some ties, connectors, foam pads, and O-ring clamps, but you can always fob [SP] up your own way of mounting this, if you're so inclined. Since this is universal, there isn't one correct way to install this, but there are some tips I can give you to help make sure this thing isn't going to cause a ton of issues for you.You do have to be a little bit careful with the install. If it's not done properly, you're gonna be playing around with this thing a lot to fix it. You only wanna use the correct sized hose for the size fittings and lines that you're working with, and you don't want to use fuel hose. Trans fluid does have a specific hose that's rated for the pressure and chemical properties of the fluid. You also wanna make sure that you're using high quality clamps. Now, these clamps are okay, but if it were me, I would check these occasionally to make sure that they're still tight. Overall, you're looking at a two out of three wrenches on the scale, and about two hours of your time to get this installed.Wrapping things up here, this trans cooler from Mishimoto Performance is a universal application cooler that can offer some good benefits for the automatic trans Mustangs that are out there. It's gonna work to keep the trans fluid at the optimal temperatures to keep the trans properly lubricated and functioning to the best of its abilities.
