Hey, guys, Stephanie with, here with the Mishimoto Oil Catch Can for all Mustangs from 1979 all the way up to 2016. This particular Mishimoto Oil Catch Can is gonna be a great option for someone looking for a universal catch can at the most affordable price to provide some protection for their engine. An oil catch can is a great way to protect an engine. It's a simple mod that does some good for all applications. You don't need to have a forced induction set up to be able to utilize a catch can. They do some good for completely stock motors as well. A catch can is a very functional piece that has a number of benefits to it. In order to understand why you need a catch can, even for an NA build, we need to look at the process of an internal combustion engine for a second. So the ignition of the air and fuel mixture inside the combustion chamber is ignited and it forces the piston down, yet a small amount of mixture that leaks past the piston rings and into the crank case. This is known as blow by. And in that blow by, there's an oil mist. The blow by and the oil mist will settle the intake over time and they're going to form a gunky build up. Now, technically speaking, there can also sometimes be condensation along with the oil mist and the blow by. And if we let all this hang out, worst case, the stuff can make it into the oil inside the crank case. This is not a good thing and it's considered oil contamination and delusion. And this is where the oil separating catch can comes into place. It's gonna push these gases, the blow by and the oil mist and the condensation, through a baffle system that's gonna trap the oil and separate it from the other gases. The gases are gonna be allowed to continue through the intake so that they can be burned off, and the oil will stay in the catch can so it doesn't move on and cause issues for the engine. So like I mentioned before, this is a universal catch can. It's not a direct bolt on or a direct fit can, so you can mount it anywhere it best suits your build, within limits of course. This can's made from aluminum and it has a nice finish, so it's gonna look good under the hood. They also make a carbon fiber version of this can as well, if you think you might like that one better. Now, this can also has this fill indicator on the side, which will let you know when you need to empty the can, and it has a 16-ounce capacity. So, 16 ounces is a lot, but you'll notice that the better catch cans actually catch a lot of oil. So the larger capacity of this can means that you won't have to be emptying this all the time. You can go a little bit longer in between servicing, if you will. The other thing I wanted to mention about this is that it does come with a mounting bracket and hardware, four clamps, two valves, and one drain plug, all of which are pre-tefloned for you, and a hose as well. I would just make sure to position the can to be in an easily accessible area so when you do need to empty the can, it isn't a fight. One thing I will say about catch cans in general, is to be wary. You want to make sure that you're getting a good one that will trap as much oil as possible. Some catch cans are just an empty container with a few ports, but these kinds are not going to be able to condense the oil vapor and trap as much oil as possible. You want to make sure that the catch can has an internal baffle and collection system for the best possible results. As far as price, you're looking at spending under $100 for this catch can from Mishimoto, which makes it the most affordable catch can. The carbon fiber version does cost a little bit more and you can always go with an oil separator as well, which still has the same function, but it is a direct fit piece that works in line with the PCV valve. So the install here is really pretty easy. You're looking at spending about an hour's time, and this is going to be a one out of three wrenches on the difficulty meter. Since this is a universal catch can, you have a little bit of room to play around with how you want to install this. You do need to get to your PCV valve and then determine the best location to mount the can. Before you mount the can, I would just suggest having all of your fittings into place so that the can's ready to bolt right out. Then it's just a matter of running your hoses. You connect one length of hose to the PCV fitting on your cold air intake and run it to the catch can. The other hose will need to be ran to the PCV valve itself. And if there's any extra hose left over, you can always cut that off of course. Wrapping things up here, the Mishimoto Universal Oil Catch Can is a fast and easy way to protect your motor from blow by. It's gonna work for both NA and forced induction cars. It's made from aluminum and it has a 16-ounce capacity. As always, you can check it out more online right here at

Reduces Engine Sludge. A catch can helps reduce power robbing engine sludge by diverting "blow-by" (a combination of exhaust gases and oil) into a outside container "catch can" where the contaminated oil is separated from the exhaust gases before they are recycled back into the intake system to be re-burned, thus preventing the used oil from re-enter the system to gum up your engine.

High Quality Materials. This Mishimoto Oil Catch Can is made from high quality aluminum and is completed in a black finish.

Application. This Mishimoto Black Oil Catch Can has a unique universal design making it perfect for use in any supercharged, turbocharged, or naturally aspirated Mustang to help your engine run cleaner.

Ask a Question

If I plug my PCV system can I still use this catch can and route it from the valve cover to the can and from the can to the supercharger powerpipe?

  • With the Mishimoto Oil Catch Can you will want to attach it to your PCV system, to ensure it will still work as intended. Instead of the PCV system running directly into the intake track, just install the catch can between the PCV and the intake without doing away with the PCV.

I'm going to be adding an m112 supercharger onto my s197 v6 in the near future. Will the hoses be able to reach the back of the engine bay where the new intake will be located? Or will I have to buy new hoses?

  • When it comes to the Mishimoto Oil Catch Can I cannot say for sure if it will have enough hose. This is a universal kit that is designed to work on all year ranges. This kit may need to be modified for your application.

Can I fit a 3/8 inch ID hose on this? Or is does it have 1/2 inch hose fittings?

  • This Mishimoto Oil Catch Can was designed to use a half inch hose. A 3/8 inch may fit however, it may be difficult to place on the vacuum ports.

SO what’s the difference between this and the JLT oil separator?

  • They will both perform the same function, and are made of similar materials. The biggest difference is that the JLT Oil Seperator is vehicle specific for a plug and play installation. Where as the Mishimoto Catch Can is a universal product and will require some modification for proper installation, depending on the year and model Mustang.

Which oil separator is best for pass side heads from getting oil sludge? I have a '97 Mustang v6/3.8. I recently swapped heads and ported/polished upper and lower intakes. The passenger side heads along w/ the back of the TB butterfly was coated w/ oil sludge. Trying to keep my internals and air clean. Which oil separator do you suggest? I have seen models that fit on the either side of the engine. Thanks Milt Moore

  • Since the JLT people changed up to the fine screens in their product, I believe it is the best for all of the autos it has a build for. The oil separator is plug-'n-play, the hose does not collapse, and the fit is correct to the model it was made for. While the driver's side one hardly picks up any blow-by and that's normal; the passenger side one is almost too good in the job it does. I would and have recommended the JLT oil separator to everyone that asks or is considering to buy one. Thanks to AM the whole decision to buy one and get it was painless, a good price, and quickly received by me. You can't go wrong with American Muscle and the JLT product.

Purchased these, mostly due to the style, but didn't realize the difference between the supplied bracket that comes with either the Black or Carbon Fiber finish. Select carefully for your modification. After realizing the difference, I would have choosen the Carbon Fiber. Also, the supplied clear hose is rigid, but once it warms up, it will suck down if you have it hooked to the PVC side before the intake. Terrible. You could save some $$$ making your own from any cylindrical container.

    Great Catch Can, Cheap hoses

The catch can works great. No more oil in my intake. However the hoses supplied with the kit are cheap and collapse after a few days of running the engine.

    Mishimoto Oil Catch Can

This product was a lot more bulkier than I anticipated. It is a little bit larger than a typical soda can. It would not look good under the hood in my opinion, not to mention the hoses look like garden hoses. I decided to return this product to AM, no fuss, and they were happy to help me out.

    Mishimoto catch can

The can itself is very nice quality. And looks great under the hood. I haven't used it yet, but hoping it'll catch some blowby. Hoses could be better, but good product. Highly recommended.

Avoid this product for 15 models.

The actual catch-can itself is made very well and looks like a high quality product. However, the shear size makes it rather difficult to find a place to install on the 15 models, not to mention the awful looking hose. AM shows clear tubing, but you're sent a green tinted hose and looks reminiscent of a garden hose. Very tacky.

Burning less oil, could come with better lines.

Can looks good under the hood and definitely catches the oil. Problems that I had were that the lines weren't strong enough to hold the vacuume, in turn they would collapse. I had to get/ make new lines. No where to easily mount it with its size.

    Good for the price

This oil catch can looks very nice. it was easy to install once knowing where to install it. I had to slightly dremel the slot on the provided bracket to get it to install. There is no filter in this can. Its literally just a fancy looking can. Nice to have it though.

Great product and not complicated at all...only issue was I had to get a different house because it was to big for my pcv and wasn't long enough anyway. I think because this is a universal part...great tho and does the job

Mishimoto Oil Catch Can - Black (79-14 All)

this is a great item, I like it... only issue I had is the tubing that comes with it is not strong enough, I found with my Saleen supercharger install under vacuum the hose collapsed... I had to buy heavy hose to handle that. the design is good because you can undo the screws on the top to change the position of the inlet and out let in reference to the fill indicator on the side so the tubing runs where you want... I highly recommend.
